Seeking a wife for Isaac, Abraham trusted that God would lead him to the perfect mate. Rebekah showed faith when she accompanied a stranger to an unseen land and husband. Following the Lord always leads to the perfect outcome.

- 00:44 David: Thank you so much for joining us today.
- 00:45 I'm David Hart.
- 00:47 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
- 00:48 Jeffrey Seif: And I am Jeffrey Seif.
- 00:50 Guys, for Isaac, I think his mother was something
- 00:53 like an anchor for him and when she went on,
- 00:56 he was rudderless and it was time to find a wife for him.
- 01:00 Kirsten: 'Cause we can help those boys move along,
- 01:02 don't we, the women?
- 01:04 Jeffrey: And women really do, you know?
- 01:05 Behind every good man is a better woman.
- 01:07 Kirsten: But there's also a covenant.
- 01:09 I mean, there is a covenant promise that Isaac
- 01:11 had to carry on.
- 01:13 I mean, you can't see the children as many
- 01:15 as the stars like Abraham's covenant
- 01:17 through Isaac if you don't have a wife.
- 01:19 Jeffrey: That's true.
- 01:20 One of the benefits, one of the many.
- 01:22 Kirsten: Ha, ha, just one.
- 01:23 David: Our drama today is about Isaac in need of a wife.
- 01:26 Let's go to that right now.
- 01:28 ♪♪♪
- 01:33 narrator: "And Abraham sent his servant to the land
- 01:36 of his brother, Nahor, to find a wife for his son, Isaac."
- 01:40 ♪♪♪
- 01:48 [speaking in Hebrew]
- 02:24 ♪♪♪
- 02:37 Jeffrey: Two words: [speaking in Hebrew] in Hebrew.
- 02:41 "Behold Rebekah." Words of destiny.
- 02:47 People looking for love today in all the wrong places,
- 02:50 in all the wrong ways.
- 02:51 For those looking for guidance, faith-filled guidance,
- 02:55 this is a story for you.
- 02:59 If you have a daughter, a sister, a friend, a woman,
- 03:05 a man, you make sure you send them a link to this program.
- 03:09 At a simple level, it started off as something as simple
- 03:12 as this: pouring water.
- 03:16 And I want to explore this story.
- 03:20 I need you to have a Bible in hand please and, by the way,
- 03:23 whenever you tune to this program,
- 03:24 you might want to have one because I like to refer to it.
- 03:27 The 24th chapter.
- 03:30 The background here, there's a man,
- 03:32 40 years of age, hasn't launched yet.
- 03:35 His father who's restless to get on with the future,
- 03:38 seems like he carries that restlessness his whole life.
- 03:41 He says, "Well, you know, Mom's died.
- 03:43 This might be a good time to find a woman
- 03:47 for my son Yitzhak."
- 03:49 Now, I think so.
- 03:51 Now, personally, I would have been interested before 40.
- 03:54 And I'm a little jealous, to tell you the truth.
- 03:56 Here it's time for this man to find a woman and so
- 03:59 what happens is Abraham sends someone else to cut the deal.
- 04:04 For me, I had to go do it on my own, to tell you the truth.
- 04:06 I wish I had somebody.
- 04:08 A father like this, believe me, I could have used.
- 04:11 Well, he sends him but what's interesting here:
- 04:15 he goes on a journey from [speaking in Hebrew]
- 04:18 Canaan, to [speaking in Hebrew], Syria.
- 04:19 It's a long trip.
- 04:21 Takes ten camels with him, laden with gold, you know, a Rolex,
- 04:26 you know, a title deed to a house in Malibu,
- 04:28 you know, some goodies.
- 04:30 But it's all cloaked under, you know, under sacks.
- 04:33 People don't know what the man has, but he does have means.
- 04:35 But he's not advertising.
- 04:37 And indeed, you wouldn't if you were out there on the road.
- 04:39 You don't want brigands to come and take what you got.
- 04:42 In any case, he makes his way there, we're told in chapter 24,
- 04:46 verse 10, with his camels, and in verse 12, hear me.
- 04:50 He says something that many people don't say.
- 04:54 He's on an assignment to find a woman and he says,
- 04:59 "Please," he speaks to the Lord.
- 05:01 "Please make something happen for me today."
- 05:06 That's what he's looking for.
- 05:08 "God," you know, "I want you to go before me in this endeavor."
- 05:12 A lot of people say, a good-looking gal, they go,
- 05:14 "That's what I'm talking about," and they're off to the races.
- 05:17 You know, forget 20 years of Sunday school,
- 05:20 they'll get rid of it on the quick.
- 05:22 "Ah, that's what I'm talking about," and off they go.
- 05:24 "Lord, I wanna see you in this."
- 05:29 And what he does--now, here's a man who's a stranger.
- 05:33 Nobody knows him. He shows up.
- 05:36 And we're told in the literature,
- 05:38 he came in the evening time, in verse 11.
- 05:41 So you figure people have already done their work
- 05:44 by this time.
- 05:45 He shows up and his prayer is, "Lord, I got something I'd like
- 05:51 you to do," and he holds out a litmus test and he says,
- 05:55 "By virtue of your so doing, you'll demonstrate kindness
- 06:01 and graciousness."
- 06:02 He wants confirmation from heaven for this
- 06:06 very important earthly business: finding a woman.
- 06:11 While he's still praying in verse 15,
- 06:15 [speaking in Hebrew].
- 06:16 All of a sudden, this woman shows up.
- 06:19 Now, what he does, it's very interesting.
- 06:21 He goes to her and, in verse 17, he says to her, "Please."
- 06:26 Now, she's there at the end of the day,
- 06:28 finishing up her chores.
- 06:30 You know, they got up early in the morning.
- 06:31 They, you know, they worked through the day.
- 06:34 It's evening time. She's there, just finishing up.
- 06:36 And a perfect stranger comes up and says,
- 06:38 "Hey, lady, can you help out a little bit?
- 06:40 You know, I'm a little thirsty.
- 06:41 You got a bucket there."
- 06:43 She pours for him, a stranger.
- 06:47 But that wasn't it alone.
- 06:49 The litmus test, not only would she show kindness to a stranger,
- 06:54 but similarly, the question is: "Will this woman also,"
- 06:59 in verse 19, "draw water for the camels until they've finished."
- 07:05 Now, these camels have gone hundreds of miles
- 07:07 and camels are like tractor trailers of the desert.
- 07:13 It's not like--it's not like topping off the tank
- 07:15 of a motorcycle, you understand?
- 07:16 They carry a lot of gallons.
- 07:18 And here's a woman at the end of the day, one bucket at a time.
- 07:22 What does this say about her?
- 07:24 She cares about animals, she cares about strangers,
- 07:27 she's entrepreneurial, she's industrious.
- 07:30 There's a kind of beauty there that, indeed, is quite telling.
- 07:36 What is a--what is a good kind of woman?
- 07:38 She's hardworking, she's just not sitting around looking
- 07:41 for love to show up in her life.
- 07:43 She's being loving in life.
- 07:45 And what happens is a special guy, Isaac,
- 07:49 and we wanna find a special gal.
- 07:51 Note the description here.
- 07:53 She's kind toward animals, she's kind toward strangers,
- 07:56 she's industrious, she's entrepreneurial.
- 07:58 That was the sign.
- 08:03 And it's all attested by a simple act
- 08:05 of the not-so-simple task of drawing water.
- 08:09 I mention this.
- 08:10 She put it in the well, one bucket at a time.
- 08:13 How many times do you think that bucket would have gone
- 08:15 into the well to fill up one camel, never mind ten?
- 08:18 She's not doing it for her father, for her brother.
- 08:20 She's doing it for a perfect stranger at the end of the day.
- 08:23 If she was tired, believe me, I've been tired one or two times
- 08:25 in my life, but this woman has an entrepreneurial spirit.
- 08:30 I'm telling you, if you're looking for God to show up
- 08:33 in the future, learn a lesson from what we're looking at
- 08:35 in the past right now.
- 08:38 By all means, please, people sit around and depress,
- 08:40 "Oh God, when are you gonna show up?"
- 08:42 Go on a journey, be industrious, seek the Lord,
- 08:45 and see what comes as a result of it.
- 08:48 And I'll tell you what happens here.
- 08:49 All of a sudden, with this activity, the fella,
- 08:54 Eliezer, realizes that there's providence, there's destiny,
- 08:58 in this arrangement.
- 08:59 And then he takes off the little gold, you know,
- 09:02 accoutrement here, a couple bracelets of gold,
- 09:06 all of a sudden he decks her out with bling.
- 09:10 Oh, what a story.
- 09:12 And you know, this story isn't just to learn about
- 09:13 what happened yesterday.
- 09:15 It's a story to learn about how to behave today.
- 09:18 We walk by faith, we look for God's guidance.
- 09:22 We have faith for the future.
- 09:24 And you know what?
- 09:25 When it comes to the business of love, even if you've had a bad
- 09:28 past, I want you to know he can bring it about afresh because
- 09:32 I believe that there's a God of the future and those that have
- 09:34 faith in him for the future, well, you know, the promise:
- 09:38 Seek and you shall find.

- 13:49 Barri Seif: Finding love at the watering hole.
- 13:53 "Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.
- 13:57 Find me a find and catch me a catch."
- 14:01 One of my most favorite songs from my most favorite musical,
- 14:06 "Fiddler on the Roof."
- 14:08 When Jeff and I went to see that just a few years ago,
- 14:11 I think we knew every word from the musical
- 14:15 and it was just a delight.
- 14:17 I love that song because, for 62 years,
- 14:20 I was single and I waited for God to make me a match.
- 14:25 So it's special here to see the servant of Abraham.
- 14:29 He's been given an assignment: Be a matchmaker.
- 14:33 And so the servant finds himself by a watering hole
- 14:38 and he's praying.
- 14:40 And I love this, that he prays and even before
- 14:44 he's finished praying, voila: Rebekah shows up.
- 14:49 She's gonna water all of the thirsty camels,
- 14:53 and the servant was quite impressed.
- 14:57 And God worked in a divine way to bring all that together.
- 15:01 I like to say that God answers prayer two ways:
- 15:07 Yes, or "I have a better idea."
- 15:10 Now, the yes answers from God and when they come immediately,
- 15:14 they're great and we love them, don't we?
- 15:16 But the "I have a better idea" answers from God take time.
- 15:23 And God wants to build Christ-likeness in us
- 15:27 that we have to be conformed to Messiah, to walk in his ways
- 15:32 and those prayer requests take longer, I know from experience.
- 15:38 I wanted to be married.
- 15:40 I didn't have a servant at the watering hole
- 15:43 to put me together.
- 15:46 I didn't join dating groups,
- 15:48 I didn't join online Internet things.
- 15:50 I waited for God to answer my prayer.
- 15:54 Like Adam, I mean, and Eve, I went to sleep like Eve
- 15:58 and I waited for my Adam and God brought my Adam
- 16:02 in the form of Jeff Seif.
- 16:04 God was the best matchmaker.
- 16:06 And we can trust him.
- 16:11 Kirsten: By the twinkle in Barri's eye,
- 16:14 I think she likes you a little bit.
- 16:17 Jeffrey: Well, I think she does and I just--
- 16:18 I just love her. It's a true story.
- 16:20 It's not fabricated for television.
- 16:22 You hear this stuff about, "Oh, they look so good on TV,"
- 16:24 and then they're getting divorced.
- 16:26 No, it's better than what we say it is.
- 16:28 David: It's a true love story.
- 16:29 Jeffrey: It really is a love story.
- 16:31 There's a God story in the love story too,
- 16:33 and it's a pleasure to work with her.
- 16:35 I'm so pleased that you get to experience her,
- 16:37 just for a few moments.
- 16:39 I get her for life. She is really just--
- 16:42 Kirsten: Well, here's what I see in Barri.
- 16:43 Rebekah was extremely giving and gentle and kind,
- 16:48 and I see that in your wife too.
- 16:50 And she's a treasure for us to know as a friend also.
- 16:53 Jeffrey: Yeah, you know, I say if someone has a problem
- 16:56 with me, they're probably right.
- 16:58 If someone's angry at Barri, it's definitely their problem.
- 17:01 David: We continue now our story of Isaac and Rebekah
- 17:04 in Part 2 of our drama.
- 17:06 Let's go there right now.
- 17:08 ♪♪♪
- 17:12 narrator: And Abraham's servant spent the night
- 17:14 in the home of Abraham's brother, Nahor.
- 17:18 He told the family about the reason for coming
- 17:20 and how the Lord had led him to this very place
- 17:23 to find a wife for Isaac.
- 17:26 The God of his master, Abraham, had been faithful,
- 17:29 for the family had agreed to the terms, saying,
- 17:32 "This thing was from the Lord."
- 17:34 ♪♪♪
- 17:44 ♪♪♪
- 18:19 Jeffrey: Personally, I love Christmas music.
- 18:24 There's just something about it, and there's a song,
- 18:26 "What child is this?"
- 18:30 Of course, referencing the Christ child.
- 18:32 I'm interested in what woman is this.
- 18:36 To whom am I referring to?
- 18:39 Rebekah.
- 18:41 She meets a guy at the well.
- 18:43 He tells a story, gives her a couple bracelets,
- 18:47 and this woman is game to take a leap of faith
- 18:52 to go with a man she doesn't know to a place
- 18:55 she's never been in order to wed a guy she's never met.
- 18:58 And I don't think he had a photograph of him to show her.
- 19:03 A woman will do this certainly is a woman of faith
- 19:09 that she'd take that leap.
- 19:13 And I'm not suggesting it, by the way.
- 19:15 I'm just trying to climb into her world a little bit,
- 19:19 because there is something about walking by faith
- 19:22 into the future.
- 19:24 There is something a little adventurous about it,
- 19:27 a little daring about it, a little bit of throwing
- 19:31 some caution to the wind.
- 19:33 Of course, she hears a story here about confirmation.
- 19:36 There was prayer, she showed up as an answer to it.
- 19:40 She assumes that Eliezer isn't being disingenuous.
- 19:44 She realizes that he comes from means to take care of her.
- 19:48 And so, I mean, there are a number of things
- 19:51 there but beyond the beauty that is her, if you'll permit,
- 19:57 I principally want to alight upon the matrix
- 20:02 from which she comes.
- 20:04 The world from which she emerges,
- 20:06 and I want you to see the kind of dignity
- 20:09 and respect that is shown her.
- 20:13 There's something beautiful about this woman,
- 20:16 there's something beautiful about where she came from.
- 20:18 And why do I say that?
- 20:20 Because they didn't just pawn her off.
- 20:22 They didn't just sell her off and say,
- 20:24 "Look, this guy's got money, diamonds, gold, silver.
- 20:27 Hey, you, sweetheart, take a walk.
- 20:29 You know, we're the recipient of all of this," no.
- 20:33 They all heard the arrangement, but what did they do?
- 20:37 They asked her for her consent after ten days.
- 20:42 You know, "Oh, yeah, I'll do it, I'll do it."
- 20:44 But then you can think about it for a couple of days
- 20:46 and change your mind.
- 20:47 The point is they didn't push her.
- 20:50 They respected her.
- 20:53 They let her make a decision.
- 20:55 They didn't push her around.
- 20:57 If you look in 24, verse 57:
- 21:00 "The said, 'We'll call the young woman
- 21:04 and let's ask her opinion.'"
- 21:08 Oh, I don't wanna be redundant but I love that.
- 21:11 You know, respecting her voice, not manipulating, not cajoling.
- 21:19 Letting her participate in her own destiny.
- 21:23 Now, in antiquity, women were kind of like bought and sold,
- 21:26 basically, but there's a kind of respect here that is
- 21:31 way ahead of its time and what does she say?
- 21:35 At the end of verse 58 in response to the question,
- 21:39 "What do you think, Rivkah?"
- 21:41 She says, in Hebrew, "[speaking in Hebrew]"
- 21:43 "I will go," let's do it.
- 21:46 And off she goes, following God into an unknown future.
- 21:51 I like her.
- 21:52 And I'll tell you when I look at her and her husband,
- 21:54 I think opposites attract because, personally,
- 21:57 Isaac doesn't strike me as particularly adventurous.
- 22:01 I think that--when I look at the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac,
- 22:05 and Jacob, there's a lot about Abraham,
- 22:07 there's a lot about Jacob.
- 22:08 Very little about Isaac.
- 22:10 There's a story about the knife, you know, on Moriah and then
- 22:13 there's a story about the wife, and that's about it.
- 22:16 And there's a guy here at 40, you know, I mean,
- 22:21 he's not here to defend himself but I kind of look at him
- 22:23 as a failure to launch, quite frankly.
- 22:26 That you have to send a messenger to go get
- 22:28 a 40-year-old, you know, the 40-year-old virgin,
- 22:30 you have to go find a woman for.
- 22:32 Personally, I would have been-- tugging on Dad's--
- 22:36 "Hey, Dad, let's get over this thing,"
- 22:37 if that's the way you're gonna do it."
- 22:40 And plus, and we'll get to this in another time.
- 22:41 That when she finally does come, that he brings her into his
- 22:45 mother's tent and is comforted for his mother's passing.
- 22:48 It seems that Mom's death precipitates, "Well, you know,
- 22:53 we got to get a wife for Isaac," you know, "to replace Mom."
- 23:02 Now, God bless Barri.
- 23:04 We'll go out to eat. I'll eat too much and I'll say,
- 23:06 "Honey, why did you let me do that?"
- 23:08 And she'll say, "Well, I'm not your mother."
- 23:10 Now, we're just playing there, of course.
- 23:13 But I mention that here because, I don't know,
- 23:17 there's a little subtle nuance.
- 23:19 He's looking for someone to replace Mom.
- 23:21 Look, we all have human weaknesses.
- 23:23 Personally, I think that Isaac has some faith going for him,
- 23:28 but frankly, I think his wife has more.
- 23:30 That's my opinion.
- 23:31 I'll get to the other side of the grave,
- 23:32 and they'll sort it out with me.
- 23:34 And then I'll get viewer mail that doesn't like my point,
- 23:36 but one of the benefits of being a professor is
- 23:38 you get to profess, you know,
- 23:40 like a doctor in front of my name.
- 23:41 I'm not telling you it's the gospel.
- 23:43 I'm just telling you it's the way I see it.
- 23:44 Now, there's a beautiful story of faith here
- 23:46 and let's just end on that note.
- 23:48 That is to say, there is a woman who's willing.
- 23:52 She has a sense of God in her affairs.
- 23:56 She doesn't understand everything but there's something
- 23:58 in her that prompts her, and faith has that risk factor.
- 24:04 I don't wanna--I don't wanna overstate the point.
- 24:06 I don't want you to go off and marry people you don't know,
- 24:08 don't like, because,
- 24:09 "But I think God wants me to do it."
- 24:10 Yeah, well, what do you wanna do?
- 24:12 You have to be able to weigh in on the affirmative
- 24:15 and she does that here.
- 24:16 It's a great story.
- 24:18 I don't know about you, but I like seeing God working
- 24:22 in people's affairs.
- 24:24 It's a beautiful story.
- 24:26 It's a beautiful woman.
- 24:27 She's joining herself to destiny.
- 24:30 Divine promises are given to her.
- 24:32 The future is going through her.
- 24:34 This is a woman who walks by faith and is believing God
- 24:39 as she walks away into an uncertain future.

- 25:38 but she had faith that God would sustain her through this time
- 25:43 and also bring about Isaac as her dream man.
- 25:47 But she took a leap of faith.
- 25:49 We take a leap of faith in accepting the Lord
- 25:51 into our lives, also.
- 25:52 We don't know what our future lies.
- 25:54 Jeffrey: Indeed, I think of the marriage ceremony
- 25:55 when she puts her hand in his.
- 25:57 And that's what the Lord beckons us to do,
- 26:00 for us to put our hand into his and then take a step together
- 26:04 on the altar and see where it leads.
- 26:06 There are many Christian people who you know, I would imagine,
- 26:09 who've testified to the fact that good things came
- 26:12 as a result of that decision.
- 26:14 It's not that they were lucky.
- 26:16 It's that they were wise.
- 26:17 They made an executive decision to seek first his kingdom.
