 - 00:26 Individuals listened to his call and responded in obedience,
 - 00:32 from the first Hebrew Avraham to the culmination of salvation

 - 00:39 The Lord faithfully intervenes with his "Divine Deliverance."

 - 00:54 David: Thank you for joining us today.
 - 00:56 I am David Hart.
 - 00:57 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
 - 01:00 Jeffrey Seif: And I am Jeffrey Seif.
 - 01:02 And we are in for a treat.
 - 01:03 Joseph, wow, what a story.
 - 01:06 Kirsten: This is horrible.
 - 01:08 The words that come into my head are "Drama, drama, drama."
 - 01:10 There's a lot.
 - 01:12 Jeffrey: He was betrayed, you know.
 - 01:13 Sometimes we look for much and it seems to come to little.
 - 01:15 I mean, he deteriorated but then rebounded greatly, wow.
 - 01:18 David: A treat sounds kind of good but I think he had kind of
 - 01:21 a roller-coaster life, not always kind of a treat as you
 - 01:24 just said.
 - 01:26 Jeffrey: Yeah, yeah, well, to the point, yes.
 - 01:28 Up and down, and life's like that and God's in that and
 - 01:31 leads us through that to something better than the down.
 - 01:34 It's great to see Joseph on the upside, yes.
 - 01:36 Kirsten: And we will see at the end of his story how he was a
 - 01:39 deliverer for so many.
 - 01:41 Jeffrey: Yes, and we'll see how God is a deliverer for so many
 - 01:43 even today.
 - 01:45 David: That's right.
 - 01:47 Right now, let's go to our dramatic reenactment where we
 - 01:49 meet the favored dreamer, Joseph.
 - 01:51 ♪♪♪
 - 01:55 announcer: This is the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob.
 - 01:59 As a young man, Joseph tended sheep along with his
 - 02:01 half-brothers in the land of Canaan.
 - 02:05 This sweeping vista now belonged to his father.
 - 02:10 His great grandfather, Abraham, had once sojourned here across
 - 02:15 the very same land.
 - 02:18 Joseph was a favorite son of his father because he was among the
 - 02:22 youngest of the brothers, and Joseph's brothers despised him
 - 02:28 for he wore a handsome coat affectionately made for him
 - 02:32 by his loving father.
 - 02:33 ♪♪♪
 - 02:40 announcer: Clearly, Joseph's dreams had set his brothers
 - 02:42 on edge.
 - 02:44 It was bad enough, they thought, that he was their father's
 - 02:48 favorite son.
 - 02:50 Now he had delusions of grandeur.
 - 02:54 [speaking in a foreign language]
 - 02:56 ♪♪♪
 - 02:59 [speaking in a foreign language]
 - 03:04 ♪♪♪
 - 03:21 [speaking in a foreign language]
 - 03:35 announcer: And so it was that Joseph was sold to a group
 - 03:37 of Ishmaelite traders for 20 pieces of silver.
 - 03:43 Joseph was bound for Egypt while his brothers reveled
 - 03:47 in the notion they would never see him again.
 - 03:51 ♪♪♪
 - 04:14 Jeffrey: Personally, I think the robe was just the tip
 - 04:17 of the iceberg.
 - 04:19 There were tensions going on for years and the robe thing just
 - 04:21 pushed it over.
 - 04:24 You know something about the story, I trust.
 - 04:27 I wanna talk about the gory, that is, look at some of the
 - 04:29 details that aren't happy to see but they're there.
 - 04:32 We know that these tensions exist in the world.
 - 04:36 Do they exist in the Word?
 - 04:39 The answer is yes, so, and the story's told.
 - 04:42 Well, we saw the story in the previous program where Yaakov,
 - 04:45 Jacob, is sent out with a blessing and he goes and, as you
 - 04:50 fill in the blanks, he's blessed, he's married, and
 - 04:53 develops a family in Paddam Aram up there in Syria.
 - 04:57 But then he comes home and there's tensions among the boys.
 - 05:02 Jacob has an experience with God but the boys are wild
 - 05:05 and woolly.
 - 05:07 Now, when you look in the 37th chapter and I'm just zooming in
 - 05:09 right there, we're told in chapter 37, verse 3,
 - 05:13 "[speaking in a foreign language], Israel loved
 - 05:18 Joseph more than his brothers."
 - 05:23 Now, I question that at one level.
 - 05:24 I relate to this at one level.
 - 05:27 Now, first of all, my Hebrew name is Yosef which is Joseph
 - 05:31 and my father's Hebrew name is Yaakov, Jacob.
 - 05:36 His English name was Jack, so I've known this story for years.
 - 05:41 What is it that set in motion this kind of dysfunction and
 - 05:46 tension that would cause these boys, not just to betray
 - 05:51 their father.
 - 05:53 They're gonna lie to their father and Jacob knows something
 - 05:55 about that, doesn't he?
 - 05:57 If you don't recall it, just go back to the previous program.
 - 05:59 Jacob had his youthful missteps.
 - 06:05 These boys, as well, will lie to their father and give up their
 - 06:08 brother as dead.
 - 06:12 I wanna speak to you for a moment about family dysfunction.
 - 06:16 Before we get out of this program, you're gonna see how
 - 06:18 the family is reunited.
 - 06:21 So there's good news from ancient Jews.
 - 06:23 There's a way that God brings them back together again and
 - 06:26 it's good news because it's a redemptive story, it's a story
 - 06:29 about deliverance.
 - 06:31 I wanna put the pause on that for a second, just to raise the
 - 06:34 question with you: In your own family systems, are you dealing
 - 06:37 with a betrayal, disappointment, intrigue, brothers against
 - 06:42 brothers, children against parents?
 - 06:47 It is so very ubiquitous.
 - 06:50 And it's promised.
 - 06:53 Yeshua says, it's noted in the Gospels that on account of the
 - 06:55 gospel individual families will go awry because of the testimony
 - 07:00 of Yeshua.
 - 07:02 My wife and I, faring from a Jewish background, have seen
 - 07:05 displeasure in our family systems because of decisions
 - 07:08 that we've made.
 - 07:11 It didn't resolve in this kind of tension but certainly there
 - 07:13 were disappointments.
 - 07:15 If you're dealing with disappointment in your family,
 - 07:18 if you're dealing with betrayal--there's a continuum
 - 07:20 where people just disappoint people and then there's out and
 - 07:23 outright betrayal.
 - 07:25 These brothers gave up Joey for dead, really.
 - 07:28 They just sent him off into slavery.
 - 07:31 They wanted to finish him off for all intents and purposes.
 - 07:34 But God brought it back to life.
 - 07:37 It didn't happen right away, but it happened.
 - 07:41 At the outset, I wanna let you know that what happened in this
 - 07:43 Word can similarly happen in your world.
 - 07:49 Stay with us as we consider the story of Joseph and his
 - 07:53 reconciliation with his brothers.
 - 07:58 ♪♪♪
 - 08:16 [speaking in a foreign language]
 - 08:34 ♪♪♪
 - 08:55 Jeffrey: His brothers threw him under the bus.
 - 08:59 We looked at that.
 - 09:01 He was given up for dead, sold into slavery, eretz Mitzrayim,
 - 09:04 in the land of Egypt.
 - 09:06 He didn't have a friend, he didn't know a soul, but there
 - 09:09 was someone who knew his soul.
 - 09:11 And Yosef, they say whatever doesn't kill you makes you
 - 09:13 stronger, if it doesn't make you bitter, it'll make you better,
 - 09:16 and Joseph just showed himself to have a different kind
 - 09:18 of constitution.
 - 09:20 And he is the kind of fellow, he arises even in
 - 09:23 adversarial circumstances.
 - 09:26 Fascinating to me here is that he, in effect, was promoted.
 - 09:32 It says in Hebrew, and I'm looking in chapter 41, verse 39,
 - 09:37 [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 09:41 which translates [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 09:44 The king says, 'You will be over all my house.'"
 - 09:51 This isn't just a promotion.
 - 09:53 You know, it feels great to get a promotion.
 - 09:55 I know when I get promoted it feels better than when I get
 - 09:57 demoted, how about that?
 - 09:59 We all get a little bit of both.
 - 10:01 But to be able to land a good job, I mean, resonates with
 - 10:04 a male, certainly, with a female I'd imagine, but this is
 - 10:08 more than just a promotion.
 - 10:10 It is providence.
 - 10:12 And it's not just a picture for these pages.
 - 10:15 Here in considering deliverance, we're looking at a picture for
 - 10:18 the ages.
 - 10:21 Why do I say that?
 - 10:23 Think of this for a moment.
 - 10:25 Rejected by your brothers, given up for dead for all intents
 - 10:31 and purposes, finding a welcome in the house of the Gentiles,
 - 10:37 and there arising and then eventually being reunited with
 - 10:43 your brothers who, at first, aren't going to recognize you
 - 10:47 and then they will.
 - 10:49 Now, that's a story to come but I think you get the gist
 - 10:51 and I think you get the drift.
 - 10:53 And I hope you get the connection because when we're
 - 10:56 looking at deliverance, here in the Old Testament, we're seeing
 - 11:04 a prophetic picture of deliverance in the
 - 11:08 New Testament.
 - 11:10 Pray tell, let's think for a minute.
 - 11:12 Someone who was rejected by his brothers.
 - 11:16 They didn't quite get him.
 - 11:18 They were antagonistic toward him.
 - 11:19 Not all of them, but it happened.
 - 11:22 So he is carted off, if you will, but he emerges even
 - 11:25 against all odds and is going to be recognized by the Gentiles
 - 11:32 and he's going to arise and have power and then eventually he is
 - 11:37 going to be reconnected with his brothers.
 - 11:40 Oh, and by the way, this fellow in the New Testament is the
 - 11:44 Savior of the world.
 - 11:47 This fellow is the savior of the world in this Word.
 - 11:54 What's the point?
 - 11:56 What's the application?
 - 11:58 I've already given a Christological application, that
 - 12:00 is, I've directed your attention to the story of Jesus and I
 - 12:04 think it's an appropriate read, and I'll develop that a
 - 12:06 little more.
 - 12:09 But you might be at a place in your own life where you're
 - 12:11 experiencing disappointment, rejection.
 - 12:14 You've been thrown under the bus and you're wondering, "My God,
 - 12:17 my God, why has thou forsaken me?"
 - 12:20 Don't give up the ghost.
 - 12:24 We've seen already, if you've followed the series.
 - 12:26 If you're just tuning in now, go back to the beginning.
 - 12:29 If you want to, go on the website, watch it for free.

 - 12:40 When you look in the biblical text, you'll see time and time
 - 12:42 again, even in dysfunctional families, God turns it around
 - 12:46 for his glory.
 - 12:48 It looks a little gory, but I know someone that can turn it
 - 12:50 into glory and I want you to know him too.

 - 14:00 David: Right now, let's go back to our drama
 - 14:02 with Joseph's emotional reunion with his brothers.
 - 14:09 announcer: Joseph is overcome.
 - 14:11 He orders his attendants to leave.
 - 14:14 Tears fall.
 - 14:17 His aching heart tells him it's over.
 - 14:20 This is Joseph's finest hour.
 - 14:29 [speaking in a foreign language]
 - 15:36 Jeffrey: Ani Yosef translates as "I am Joseph."
 - 15:44 When I look at the clip you just saw, I cry and I'm not a real
 - 15:49 crying kind of guy.
 - 15:52 My wife wishes I would be more in touch with my feelings
 - 15:55 and I really am working at it but I'm more of a type A.
 - 15:58 I don't just emote all that often.
 - 16:02 But not only do I honestly shed a tear when I see it, whenever
 - 16:05 I read the story, I get emotional.
 - 16:09 And I'm not the type.
 - 16:11 And I can't fully explain why and, of course, you're not
 - 16:13 watching TV for me to get off my chest the inner workings of
 - 16:16 my soul.
 - 16:19 I only mention this to say that I find something moving here
 - 16:22 when he who is the Savior reveals himself to his brothers
 - 16:27 who had given up on him who actually disappointed their
 - 16:31 father by pushing their brother away.
 - 16:35 And that means something to me at that level
 - 16:37 and I'll interpret it.
 - 16:39 I'll translate that.
 - 16:41 Maybe the story means something to me as well because my name is
 - 16:43 Yosef but that's overly simplistic.
 - 16:46 No, there's a story of redemption and deliverance here.
 - 16:51 One could argue I'm beating the horse, I already made the point,
 - 16:55 but there's an old saying, "If it's not worth saying 100 times,
 - 16:58 it's not worth saying once."
 - 17:01 Not only does it interest me here when the deliverer shows
 - 17:05 himself to his brothers, not only do I find merit in this
 - 17:10 story, but my own life in ministry is to help my brothers,
 - 17:15 to show them the deliverer.
 - 17:19 I'm not echoing my own sentiments.
 - 17:22 It was a rabbi who came to faith named Paul who said, "My heart's
 - 17:25 desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might come
 - 17:28 to know the Messiah."
 - 17:29 Now, the average Christian today, many could care less.
 - 17:32 That's the God's honest truth.
 - 17:34 Now, I'm not trying to get negative but let's just call an
 - 17:36 ace an ace and a spade a spade, that to actually help advocate
 - 17:39 for Israel's Messiah amongst Israel's people, that has not
 - 17:43 been on the radar in church history, minimally.
 - 17:48 To varying degrees, it's on the radar now.
 - 17:50 Maybe it's gotten to your heart and it resonates with you,
 - 17:53 the story of helping the brothers see the deliverer.
 - 17:58 To do that, I say with our ministry here, Zola in his day
 - 18:02 and me in mine, and all the teachers we have here, it's
 - 18:05 really not a one-man gig, it's all about helping Jesus'
 - 18:08 people--helping Jewish people come to know Jesus and helping
 - 18:11 Jesus' people come to know Jews to the end that they might look
 - 18:15 at him and go, "Oh my goodness, the deliverer in fact is
 - 18:19 my brother."
 - 18:22 People think today that Jesus is somebody else's brother,
 - 18:25 certainly in the Jewish world.
 - 18:27 Jews don't understand that Jesus was a Jew, the apostles were
 - 18:31 Jewish, and even that the story took place in Judea.
 - 18:34 And even if it's intellectually known, still the Christian story
 - 18:38 looks like something that's unfit for Jewish consumption,
 - 18:43 partly, not just because the church lost sight of the Jewish
 - 18:46 roots of their own faith but many, sadly, were anti-Jewish.
 - 18:50 That was then, this is now.
 - 18:53 We represent the tip of a spear.
 - 18:57 The only reason why I'm here right now--I don't have enough
 - 19:00 money in my pocket to pay the rent for air time.
 - 19:03 The reason why I'm here right now is because people care about
 - 19:06 this story and because people care about helping us tell it.
 - 19:11 It's a we thing, it's not a me thing.
 - 19:14 I, in effect, am just an ambassador on your behalf and,
 - 19:17 by the way, this is not a fundraising program.
 - 19:20 That I, in effect, still am an ambassador on your behalf.
 - 19:24 We're looking at the Hebrew Bible.
 - 19:26 We're looking at deliverance.
 - 19:29 And the issue is: Guess who we're talking about.
 - 19:35 I think there's ample testation--attestation to the
 - 19:38 truth that we're talking about Yeshua.
 - 19:41 And I'm so glad that this story is speaking to you.
 - 19:46 David: One of the key words in this whole series that you'll
 - 19:49 hear and see is the word "forgiveness."
 - 19:53 Joseph forgave.
 - 19:56 I think God had something to do with it.
 - 19:58 I don't know if he would have done that on his own,
 - 20:00 but he heard from God.
 - 20:03 Jeffrey: And things do get really trippy in family
 - 20:06 relationships: bad blood, bad history, family members
 - 20:10 sin against each other.
 - 20:13 I mean, it happened thousands of years ago but it happens today
 - 20:16 and you're really right on, spot on there, David.
 - 20:18 Forgiveness is a key.
 - 20:21 David: Right.
 - 20:22 Kirsten: I have to be honest.
 - 20:24 I don't know if I would have been as nice as Joseph.
 - 20:27 I mean, if I had brothers, you know, put me in a pit, sell me
 - 20:29 off, and just forget about me, I don't know if I would have been
 - 20:32 so kind when I saw their faces.
 - 20:35 I mean, he revealed himself to them and he forgave them.
 - 20:40 And you even mentioned that it's an emotional situation.
 - 20:45 I mean, you got all emotional on set, I think.
 - 20:48 Jeffrey: Well, again, I made the point I don't get emotional very
 - 20:50 often, really, or I don't show it but when I come to that point
 - 20:53 in the story, I always do.
 - 20:57 Yeah, it's powerful.
 - 20:58 Kirsten: It's intense.
 - 21:00 David: I know in my life when I have forgiven, there's a healing
 - 21:02 that takes place in my life.
 - 21:04 I don't know if you've experienced any of that.
 - 21:05 Jeffrey: Oh, yes.
 - 21:07 You know, we've had to forgive and forget and put stuff behind.
 - 21:09 Friends, please, we just wanna give you this point so you can
 - 21:13 take it back home.
 - 21:15 David mentioned a key.
 - 21:17 The key is forgiveness.
 - 21:19 That's a key that opens doors in your relationships.
 - 21:21 Maybe there's something kind of bound up in there and you can
 - 21:23 get those chains off of you and reach into the future
 - 21:26 and get that weight gone.
 - 21:28 And it begins with forgiving.
 - 21:30 You might think of someone that you need to forgive and reach
 - 21:32 out to them and do that, yes?
 - 21:34 Kirsten: Something that I've learned in life and I think
 - 21:36 we've walked through together in family situations, is when we
 - 21:39 are holding in that unforgiveness, it's not
 - 21:43 affecting the other person.
 - 21:45 Have you noticed that?
 - 21:46 It doesn't affect them.
 - 21:48 They go on with their lives.
 - 21:50 But it eats us up on the inside.
 - 21:52 And I don't know at what point Joseph released that.
 - 21:54 I mean, he was in prison falsely for years also.
 - 21:57 I mean, that's a whole 'nother aspect of his life, but he got
 - 22:01 to a point where he had to let all of that go.
 - 22:05 And I think he came out better in the end and then, oh my gosh,
 - 22:10 all the Israelites came to live there because of his forgiveness
 - 22:13 of his brothers.
 - 22:15 Jeffrey: You're tapping into something that's really
 - 22:17 powerful, you know?
 - 22:19 He really did suffer at the hands of others.
 - 22:22 He was a victim, but he shows us how a victim can become a
 - 22:25 victor, and I think the forgiveness component, that key
 - 22:29 that, David, that you alighted upon, really is important for
 - 22:34 the Joseph story and important for you and for us.
 - 22:37 It just is.
 - 22:38 David: That's right.
 - 22:40 Kirsten: Our time is too short sometimes, yeah.
