 - 00:34 And I think it's cool, chapter 14 of Revelation, 144,000 Jewish

 - 00:40 Sounds like we're in Israel and we got Jews believing in Jesus.
 - 00:43 That's what I'm talking about.

 - 01:57 removed and many miles removed.
 - 02:00 It's fascinating to me how biblical authors still orient
 - 02:04 themselves to Jerusalem.
 - 02:08 I mention that because here in the Book of Revelation we're
 - 02:12 looking at a document penned around 95 AD.
 - 02:16 John is out there in the sea, far away in proximity to Turkey,
 - 02:23 and he has a vision in chapter 14.
 - 02:26 Behold, he sees the lamb standing on Mount Zion in
 - 02:33 Jerusalem surrounded by 144,000 Hebrews.
 - 02:40 I find that interesting 'cause at the time of the writing, a
 - 02:44 Jerusalem temple was leveled, Mount Zion was nothing.
 - 02:48 It was a stationhouse for the 10th Legion Fretensis.
 - 02:53 Actually, the symbol of the legion was a swine.
 - 02:58 At the time of the writing, Jews were in fact
 - 03:00 banished from the holy city.
 - 03:02 But John looks over the horizon and he sees something
 - 03:07 of a restoration.
 - 03:09 He mentions these 144,000, and they have a mark.
 - 03:16 I like to refer to it--to the mark as the mark of the best or
 - 03:21 the mark of the blessed as opposed to the mark
 - 03:24 of the beast.
 - 03:26 I say that because we're told here with him were 144,000,
 - 03:30 I mentioned that, and his name and his Father's name
 - 03:35 was written on their foreheads.
 - 03:37 I think that's rather interesting people here have the
 - 03:39 mark of the beast written on the forehead.
 - 03:41 Actually, the whole idea of having some kind of symbol
 - 03:46 attached to the person through what we'd call a tattoo was more
 - 03:50 common in century one than people realize.
 - 03:54 Legions would have, you know, their tattoo or their legion,

 - 04:00 Technology had developed as a way that people identified
 - 04:03 with things.
 - 04:05 Today, goodness, you go out on the beach and you see people
 - 04:07 are all inked up.
 - 04:09 It was less common in antiquity, but people did identify.
 - 04:13 And we see that here the imagery plays off of that.
 - 04:18 These are people who make a deliberate decision to be
 - 04:21 identified with the lamb, even amidst the turbulence
 - 04:24 of trying times.
 - 04:25 I say that these are faithful witnesses to the Lord,
 - 04:28 they're following him, but Jerusalem has gone.
 - 04:32 It's a trying world, but these people have resolve.
 - 04:38 So much good stuff in the literature.
 - 04:40 There's an exhortation for perseverance, and why is that?
 - 04:44 Because these people are going to have to go through
 - 04:47 some stormy moments.
 - 04:50 In fact--interestingly, as we make our way through the
 - 04:53 chapter, we pivot from this glorious image of the faithful
 - 05:01 walking with the Lord and this encouragement to persevere.
 - 05:06 We pivot from that now and go to this image of a sickle that's
 - 05:11 going to be put into the earth for the harvest.
 - 05:14 Oh, you say, "Bearing fruit for the kingdom?"
 - 05:16 No, this is a harvest of sour grapes.
 - 05:20 The Bible talks about judgment.
 - 05:23 We go down to verse 15.
 - 05:25 "Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come,
 - 05:32 because the harvest of the earth is fully ripe."
 - 05:39 As I mentioned, the chapter begins with a prophetic word
 - 05:44 about the future; once again the faithful there at Zion, but
 - 05:48 that's not the present from this author's perspective.
 - 05:53 The present from his perspective is things are not right

 - 06:31 It's good to know, however, that God's sun shines and there's a

 - 07:10 I say that because John is on record doing that here.
 - 07:14 Fifteenth chapter is a good one.
 - 07:16 They're not all good.
 - 07:17 In fact, it's going to sour moving forward, but there's a

 - 07:25 In verse 2 he sees something, and what does he see?
 - 07:29 He sees those who are overcomers.
 - 07:33 He sees they're standing and worshiping, and they're singing

 - 08:16 Not everything is great, not everything is wonderful, and
 - 08:20 some people wonder if God's even involved in it.
 - 08:24 But these people with faith even amidst the turbulence of trying

 - 08:35 for success in life and walking with the Lord.
 - 08:38 You might find yourself in the shadow of death, but you still

 - 08:42 He says, "Just and true are your ways, O king of the nations."
 - 08:49 Well, first of all, it doesn't look like God is the king of the
 - 08:51 nations because the devil, the ruler of this world, is just

 - 08:56 But this author, these people give voice to the fact that
 - 09:00 faith sees that ultimately God is the one who is in control.
 - 09:05 And though his ways aren't always discernible, nevertheless
 - 09:09 they give voice to the fact that still they are just and true.
 - 09:14 He asks a question rhetorically.

 - 09:19 Truth of the matter is many don't fear or glorify.
 - 09:23 The world is in a state of debauchery and decay, but this
 - 09:26 is the assembly of the righteous.
 - 09:29 They will reverence him and glorify him.
 - 09:32 And he says, "For you alone are holy, and all the nation shall
 - 09:36 come and worship before you."
 - 09:41 It's fascinating 'cause we're at a point in time here where the
 - 09:44 emperor is galvanizing worship, that all should
 - 09:47 do obeisance to him.
 - 09:50 And by the way, these believers don't burn incense to him.
 - 09:53 They don't give him--they don't say their pledge of allegiance
 - 09:57 to the emperor, and they stand out and are persecuted by virtue
 - 10:01 of the fact that they don't do that.
 - 10:04 Well, here we're told that the righteous are the ones saying,
 - 10:07 "God, it's only to you."
 - 10:09 They not only have a prophetic picture that gives them
 - 10:13 encouragement for their own destiny, but they give voice to
 - 10:16 the fact here: "All nations shall come
 - 10:19 and worship before you."
 - 10:22 And at this sense, the rebels.
 - 10:24 In the empire, the emperor was beckoning that worship
 - 10:29 should be directed to him.
 - 10:31 They say no, that at some point in time the earth is going to
 - 10:36 acknowledge he who really is the King of kings and the Lord
 - 10:41 of lords, and this is not the emperor who sits in Rome.
 - 10:48 This author is going to go on with prophetic vision to cast

 - 10:58 He envisions a point in time when all of that is displaced
 - 11:02 when God's kingdom comes, when his will is done on earth

 - 11:13 for your righteous acts have been revealed."
 - 11:19 His righteous acts have been revealed to them,
 - 11:24 but it hasn't yet been fully and finally manifest.
 - 11:29 All that said, he goes on to say in verse 5, "After these things,

 - 11:42 There was just nothing there but the 10th Legion Fretensis,
 - 11:46 which was an insult, an affront to Biblical religion.
