- 01:34 It's where I'm picking up.
- 01:36 But before we get here, let's go back here.
- 01:38 And by back here, I mention the first century world.
- 01:41 This is the Mediterranean.
- 01:44 The Latins called it Mare Nostrum, Our Sea.
- 01:46 Judea was one of their eastern provinces.

- 02:01 We're looking about 95 AD.
- 02:04 There's churches here, congregations on the western
- 02:07 edge of Asia Minor yesterday, Turkey today.
- 02:13 We're here, Ephesus.
- 02:15 It's a major world cities, and there's a belt of a number of
- 02:19 major cities just to the east of it.
- 02:21 And that's where our story is today.
- 02:25 'Course, the gospel expands outward beyond Judea.
- 02:28 Paul went through Cyprus and then into the heartland of Asia
- 02:33 Minor on his first journey.
- 02:35 Overland, he went through this on his second journey.
- 02:37 Ephesus was a headquarters.
- 02:40 He crossed the Adriatic Sea, went into Philippi and Greece
- 02:46 and then pushed, eventually, all the way to Italy but that's
- 02:50 far away.
- 02:52 We're here now and there's a Word of the Lord given to
- 02:54 congregations here.
- 02:57 In chapter 3 there is a message given to the congregations
- 03:00 in Sardis.
- 03:02 Again, we're looking at a number of cities here, and they're
- 03:05 exhorted, they're told, "Wake up, and strengthen
- 03:09 what remains."
- 03:12 The whole idea of falling asleep is very common in--if you look
- 03:17 in the New Testament there's this
- 03:19 eschatological watchfulness.
- 03:22 People fall asleep.
- 03:24 The disciples did as well, you might recall; in Gethsemane,
- 03:28 they were woken by Yeshua's arrest.
- 03:31 Things just kind of drag on and people get dreary.
- 03:34 They get weary.
- 03:36 And he says, "Wake up," and in verse 3, "Remember what you have
- 03:41 received and heard," the exhortation to this watchfulness
- 03:45 at the end of days to not let yourself slumber.
- 03:50 There's a message given to another congregation here to the
- 03:54 east of Ephesus in Philadelphia.
- 03:57 He says in verse 8, "I know your deeds."
- 04:00 He says in verse 9, "There are these pretenders among you,
- 04:04 these fakes, individuals who say they are Jewish but are not."
- 04:09 By the way, parenthetically, there's a lot of stuff that
- 04:12 parades around in the name of Jewish perspective on biblical
- 04:16 literature that's not particularly authentic, not
- 04:18 very kosher.
- 04:21 But there are people here that are pretending to be part of the
- 04:23 community and the congregation, the early church is so Jewish,
- 04:26 he just says, you know, "They're pretending to be Jews like you."
- 04:29 There's hardly any Jews in the church today, tragically.
- 04:32 That's why I love this program, "Our Jewish Roots," I really do
- 04:35 to help stimulate an appreciation for things Jewish.
- 04:38 He says to them in verse 10, he exhorts them that they've kept
- 04:42 his word about patient endurance, subsequent to which
- 04:47 he says, "I am coming soon."
- 04:51 Friends, hear me on this.
- 04:54 We're gonna get to interpreting fascinating passages in
- 04:56 reasonably short order but there's an exhortation here to
- 05:00 be patient and to endure.
- 05:05 He speaks about a coming New Jerusalem before we get out of
- 05:08 verse 13 and I should mention that by the time of the writing
- 05:12 here, Jerusalem was destroyed.
- 05:15 The temple was destroyed.
- 05:17 He sees a new Jerusalem coming.
- 05:19 That's a good news and, by the way, we live in a world today
- 05:21 where we see Jerusalem arising, don't we?
- 05:23 That's another story.
- 05:26 To Laodicea now, in verse 14, he says, "You're lukewarm.
- 05:29 Would that you were either cold or hot," he says, "but I'm gonna
- 05:34 spew you out of my mouth," in verse 16.
- 05:37 By the way, interestingly, Laodicea was known for its
- 05:40 lukewarm waters.
- 05:42 And by the way, Laodicea in antiquity was also known for the
- 05:47 manufacture of eye ointment.
- 05:50 I mention that because he says, "I counsel you to get salve to
- 05:54 anoint your eyes," in verse 18.
- 05:57 He's kind of playing off where they are at the moment.
- 05:59 When we look in chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation therein, the Lord

- 06:41 on the front end of it all is to carry on, to tarry on, God is

- 07:04 Jeffrey: In chapter 5, the cat's gonna get out of the

- 07:10 We'll get at the end of the book for that but we're in chapter 4
- 07:13 now and it's this in between moment.
- 07:16 I mention that because in chapters 2 and 3, there's
- 07:20 messages to believers, moral exhortations to keep the faith,
- 07:24 et cetera.
- 07:26 In chapter 4, there's this wonderful experience where the
- 07:29 author is beckoned to go up.
- 07:34 In chapter 4, verse 1: "The--a door was standing open
- 07:37 in heaven.
- 07:39 And there's a voice, 'Come up here, and I will show you what
- 07:43 must take place after these things.'"
- 07:46 Things are gonna be described in short order.
- 07:51 But he's beckoned to come up and, in effect, experience

- 07:59 I mention that because we're told in verse 2: "Immediately I
- 08:03 was in the Ruach," in the Spirit, "and behold, a throne
- 08:07 was standing in heaven, and One seated on the throne."
- 08:12 And then around the throne there are individuals worshiping,
- 08:15 et cetera.
- 08:17 And the author here gets quite an experience.
- 08:21 All that said, I wanna, here at the outset of this segment,
- 08:24 underscore the importance of experience.
- 08:28 In religion, that can be marginalized, unfortunately, in
- 08:33 some circles.
- 08:36 But, you know, I believe that people need to have something
- 08:38 that's impactful, something that's painted on their
- 08:41 imagination and I mention that because here there's a bad
- 08:46 moon rising.
- 08:49 But on the front end of that, there's a vision of God which
- 08:51 gives a kind of encouragement and a strengthening to bear up
- 08:54 with the troubles of the day.
- 08:57 And, oh goodness, we are going to be seeing troubles of the day
- 09:00 in short order.
- 09:02 But first, there is this experience likened to Isaiah in
- 09:05 chapter 6, where the Lord beckons him up and he has
- 09:09 a vision.

- 09:16 Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh, Adonai-Tzva'ot.
- 09:19 Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty.
- 09:22 There's only one vision in Isaiah the prophet.
- 09:26 He was a writing prophet.
- 09:28 These visions are all over here but we're told here that there's
- 09:32 various visions, verses 6 and 7, there are these creatures that
- 09:38 emerge, a lion, an ox, a face like a man, an eagle, and when
- 09:43 we get in the book of Ezekiel and in the books of Daniel as
- 09:48 well, we see this same kind of imagery, fascinating,
- 09:52 shocking, scary.
- 09:54 There are these living creatures in verse 8 and they cant:
- 10:00 "Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh, Adonai-Tzva'ot.
- 10:03 Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts, who was and is and who is
- 10:09 to come."
- 10:12 We're told in verse 9 that these living creatures "would give
- 10:16 glory and honor and thanks to the One seated on the throne."
- 10:20 We see this in Ezekiel as well.
- 10:22 There's the merkabhah, the chariot.
- 10:25 There's this picture of God in the heavens, swirling around.
- 10:29 People think flying saucers on occasion,
- 10:32 fascinating imagery.
- 10:34 And here, this image is resurrected in Revelation, a
- 10:37 powerful image of God who's seated on the throne and
- 10:42 individuals, in verse 10, are worshiping him.
- 10:46 And I should say, by the way, that we do that now.
- 10:50 Those who have had an experience with the Lord, even amidst the
- 10:54 turbulence of trying times, we turn and we put our eyes on him.
- 11:01 It says it explicitly in the literature that they "worship
- 11:06 him who lives forever."
- 11:09 It's an executive decision and I hope that you are minded to do
- 11:14 that as well and they cant in verse 11 here: "Worthy are you,
- 11:18 O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you
- 11:22 created all things; because of your will they existed and were
- 11:28 created."
- 11:30 So in this segment there's this powerful worshipful image that
- 11:34 the eyes are turned toward the Lord.
- 11:38 He's on the throne.
- 11:40 It's not gonna look like it in short order 'cause the world's
- 11:42 gonna come unglued.
- 11:45 I wanna get to chapter 6 and that which follows in
- 11:48 short order.
- 11:50 We're gonna see apocalyptic vision, we're gonna see plague
- 11:53 and turmoil unleashed on the earth.
- 11:55 But we'll get to that in the next segment.
- 11:58 Here again, let me underscore the importance of having a
- 12:01 relationship with the Lord, walking with the Lord, having a

- 12:08 Turn your eyes upon him.

- 17:23 The answer is the Lamb was slain and, by virtue of the Lamb being
- 17:28 slain in Exodus, they were extricated from misery
