- 03:08 at an ancient book: the book of Isaiah.
- 03:12 Copied by the sectaries at Qumran many years ago.
- 03:18 Isaiah was a fascinating personality, and he's worth
- 03:23 considering when we consider David Melech Yisrael,
- 03:28 David the king of Israel.
- 03:30 Though Isaiah himself wasn't part of David's administration,
- 03:34 actually he wished he was and the reason why is because Isaiah
- 03:40 made his entrance onto the stage of the human drama during the
- 03:44 administration of Uzziah, a king who started off good enough
- 03:49 but a king who went bad.
- 03:52 He went south.
- 03:55 Isaiah saw his demise and it's recorded in the book of Kings
- 03:59 and the book of Chronicles.
- 04:01 Not only is it recorded but it said as much that Isaiah was the
- 04:06 historian that talked about the demise of Judah under Uzziah's
- 04:11 ministration and it's perhaps for that reason when Isaiah
- 04:16 began his prophetic administration he spoke
- 04:20 to the pathetic first.
- 04:22 You can't read the first five chapters of Isaiah without your
- 04:27 toes curling in your shoes when you hear his harsh invective,
- 04:32 his diatribe, how that prophet gave voice to a world gone bad.
- 04:39 Priests, the religious, the secular,
- 04:42 everyone who was anyone was on the take.
- 04:46 And against the backdrop of that Draconian introduction,
- 04:49 the 11th chapter, however, as we see here,
- 04:52 Isaiah spoke of a coming king, a David-like king.
- 04:57 We're told in chapter 11: "There'll come forth a rod from
- 05:01 the stump of Jesse, and a branch will grow from his roots."
- 05:06 Remember that Jesse was David's father and the Davidic house,
- 05:11 in effect, was cut down but there will--emerge from
- 05:15 that a righteous branch-- a righteous one, a mashiach,
- 05:19 a messianic character.
- 05:21 We're told here,
- 05:23 [speaking foreign language]
- 05:25 the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him.
- 05:27 The spirit of wisdom and understanding, counsel, might,
- 05:30 knowledge, fear of the Lord.
- 05:32 His delight will be in the fear of the Lord."
- 05:35 [speaking foreign language]
- 05:37 The fear of the Lord doesn't speak of trepidation and panic
- 05:40 as much as it does of respect and because he respects
- 05:44 the Lord, he respects others.
- 05:46 Isaiah was chagrined, and why is that?
- 05:49 Because the kingdom was vitiated, it was defiled,
- 05:52 beneath the hands of godless rulers.
- 05:55 He says in 10:2: "They robbed the needy of justice,
- 06:00 they take what is right from the poor of my people,
- 06:05 the widows are their prey."
- 06:07 He goes on in the 10th chapter, verse 2 and 12, he says
- 06:10 that "people are robbed of their treasuries."
- 06:12 Again, like our world where the wicked take advantage
- 06:16 of the weaker.
- 06:18 Isaiah sees a Davidic-like leader who re-emerges
- 06:22 even centuries after David.
- 06:24 And this is this messianic personality.
- 06:26 We're told here that his delight will be in the fear of the Lord
- 06:30 and he will rule with justice and equity
- 06:33 and fairness and goodness.
- 06:35 Now listen to me.
- 06:36 We need that kind of godly leadership in our godless world.
- 06:41 And I am concerned, personally.
- 06:45 I don't know what you look for in leadership, be it civil
- 06:49 or religious but personally, individuals that resonate with
- 06:53 Judeo-Christian ethics really matter to me and when
- 06:57 I don't see that, I am gravely concerned.
- 07:03 Isaiah pointed to the day when someone would emerge likened
- 07:07 unto David and this reflects the fact that among other things
- 07:11 that the memory of David is alive and may the memory be
- 07:15 alive in our day as we're with some measured anxiety
- 07:19 looking into the future.
- 07:21 May it be your prayer with mine that godly people wield

- 07:30 by virtue of their so doing.
- 07:35 male: And the Lord said, "Woe to the shepherd who destroys

- 07:50 driven them away, and not attended to them.
- 07:53 Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,
- 07:57 says the Lord."
- 08:04 Jeffrey: Behind me is a scaled version of the city of David
- 08:09 in Yerushalaim in Jerusalem.
- 08:12 Actually, here in modern Israel, folks spent a small fortune
- 08:15 to reconstruct that and it's beautiful.
- 08:18 I'm told by a friend, Eli Asides, that this site is
- 08:22 along with Masada one of the most frequented sites
- 08:25 that pilgrims wanna check into when they visit Israel.
- 08:29 And they're excited to see it.
- 08:31 Jirmeyah, Jeremiah, however, looked at this portion
- 08:34 of the city and he was not a happy camper.
- 08:36 And why is that?
- 08:38 Well, he says in the 23rd chapter of his own book--
- 08:41 Jirmeyah, Jeremiah, is on record saying, "Woe is the shepherds
- 08:44 who destroy and scatter the sheep."
- 08:48 Jirmeyah, Jeremiah, saw destruction coming
- 08:51 upon the city of David.
- 08:53 Yerushalaim was going to take a hit by the Babylonians,
- 08:57 and why is that?
- 08:59 Because Jeremiah says the priests were vitiated, defiled.
- 09:04 The secular rulers were defiled as well.
- 09:08 In so many ways, it was a world like our own, that is to say
- 09:11 there's the pretense of religion and virtue but the world
- 09:15 had long since abandoned biblical ethics.
- 09:19 And so it is that Jirmeyah, Jeremiah, went on record saying
- 09:22 that the sheep are going to be scattered and so they were.
- 09:28 That's the bad news.
- 09:29 The good news, however, is that Jirmeyah envisioned
- 09:32 a good world to come.
- 09:34 And I'm glad he did, by the way.
- 09:36 He didn't just leave his constituents despairing
- 09:38 as we're gonna see in a moment when we look in the Bible.
- 09:41 Though he himself despaired, Jirmeyah is called the weeping
- 09:45 prophet, he's so very effusive, emotive, he's weeping, why?
- 09:49 'Cause he sees this beauty falling apart.
- 09:52 He's called the lonely prophet as well because this priestly
- 09:55 prophet was told never to marry and bear children
- 09:59 because the children were just destined for the slave market,
- 10:02 if not death outright when the Babylonians
- 10:05 were going to come and rape and pillage and plunder,
- 10:08 and come they did.
- 10:10 Jirmeyah, Jeremiah, as I'd said, saw a bad moon rising over this
- 10:14 world that sadly is so much like our own but not only that,
- 10:19 happily however, he telescopes to the future and he sees
- 10:24 a bright spot beginning to emerge over the horizon
- 10:28 like the sun rising from the east and displacing
- 10:31 the prevailing darkness.
- 10:33 He says in verse 5 in his own words: "Behold,
- 10:35 the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up
- 10:38 to David a branch of righteousness."
- 10:43 We heard in the Isaiahnic passage earlier about
- 10:46 the Netzer, the branch that will spring forth.
- 10:49 And by the way, that's why in the New Testament Jesus
- 10:52 is associated with a city called Nazaret, Nazareth.
- 10:56 It's named after the same.
- 10:58 That connection wouldn't have been lost to Jewish people
- 11:01 in the 1st century of this, the common era.
- 11:04 In any case, Jeremiah telescopes into the future and he sees
- 11:09 this Davidic person coming.
- 11:11 David's been dead for years by the time he speaks and David's
- 11:15 been dead by--for millennia, but even in the Jewish world today
- 11:19 we sing "David Melech Yisrael chai vekayam,"
- 11:22 David the king of Israel lives,
- 11:25 because the memory lives and why is that?
- 11:27 Because the prophets kept his memory alive and why is that?
- 11:30 Because against the backdrop of a decaying world, they saw
- 11:35 there would be an emergent Davidic-like leader.
- 11:38 We're told in verse 6: "In his days Judah will be saved."
- 11:43 And he says under his administration,
- 11:46 "Israel will dwell securely."
- 11:48 And then he goes on to speak of this leader and says,
- 11:51 "And this is the name by which he shall be called:
- 11:55 Adonai Tsidkenu, the Lord our Righteousness."
- 12:00 I don't know how you feel but in many ways I'm discouraged
- 12:05 when I look out--I'm not the wisest owl in the forest--
- 12:08 but when I look out over my perch, I'm not a happy
- 12:11 camper when I look at our own culture.
- 12:14 I see an abandonment of Judeo-Christian ethics.
- 12:17 I see a pretense of religion but people deny the power of it.
- 12:22 I find people talking the talk but I find rot and decay,
- 12:26 and frankly I find it in high places.
- 12:29 Like Jeremiah and like you, perhaps, I, we, he, look forward
- 12:33 to the day when we'll see this emergent leadership.
- 12:37 This series is called "The Warrior King," and we're looking
- 12:40 for David-like leadership in Goliath-like times.

- 16:59 When there's bad leadership that comes to power,
- 17:02 it does much the same.
- 17:05 David must have been spellbound with grief when he considered

- 17:20 by the way, that he has come to power and David
- 17:24 was not a happy camper.
- 17:28 Well, Ezekiel remembers this story years later.
- 17:33 That is to say, the David story.
- 17:36 And why is that?
- 17:37 Because Ezekiel inhabited a world much like David did
- 17:41 in the sense that bad people had come to power.
- 17:46 In fact, the wound in Judah was irreparable.
- 17:50 It was not to be fixed.
- 17:52 Judgment was meted out, and why is that?
- 17:56 Because wickedness rained from the palace,
- 17:59 wickedness rained from the pulpit, and wickedness
- 18:02 was ubiquitous in the pew everywhere.
- 18:06 And it was not to be fixed.
- 18:08 So much for the bad news.
- 18:11 Difficulties notwithstanding, in a world where the righteous were
- 18:14 disconcerted and scattered, Ezekiel telegraphed out into the
- 18:18 future and he envisioned that a good shepherd will emerge.
- 18:23 He says--he lambasts in the 34th chapter these bad shepherds

- 18:33 to say, difficulties notwithstanding, in verse 23,
- 18:37 and I quote, he says, "I will establish one shepherd

- 22:22 for the things that we've done wrong.
