  • 03:04 in the book Shemu'el, Samuel.
  • 03:07 It's a book that's named after him.
  • 03:09 He didn't write it all.
  • 03:10 The reason why is because in the 25th chapter,
  • 03:13 where we are today, he dies and this man's death
  • 03:17 precipitates a crisis for David
  • 03:19 because it was Shemu'el who launched his career.
  • 03:22 We're told in 25:1,
  • 03:25 [speaking foreign language]
  • 03:27 "And Samuel died."

  • 03:33 "And all Israel gathered themselves to him,

  • 03:44 [speaking foreign language]
  • 03:48 After that, David leaves and he goes to the wilderness of Paran
  • 03:53 and when he goes there, David is still reeling somewhat
  • 03:57 from news of the death of his mentor,
  • 04:00 and as if that wasn't bad enough for the man,
  • 04:03 as with this wagon, he was very low on provisions,
  • 04:07 in many respects empty in fact.
  • 04:10 So David did, and the story's unpacked in the 25th chapter,
  • 04:14 David followed the conventions of the day and he went back
  • 04:19 to someone that should have been a patron to him.
  • 04:22 David and his men weren't out acting as brigands,
  • 04:27 stealing off the land, but rather they were policing.
  • 04:31 As his men were out and about, granted on the run from Saul,
  • 04:35 they still were protecting various estates in the
  • 04:39 wilderness and in the countryside and decorum had it
  • 04:43 that those that protected should be able to go back
  • 04:45 and get some basic provisions.
  • 04:48 Similarly, I have a career as a police officer,
  • 04:51 and I worked as a cop, usually late at night.
  • 04:55 Wasn't at all uncommon I'd pull into a gas station and they'd
  • 04:59 give me some coffee, they're glad that I pulled in there.
  • 05:02 You know, these stop-and-go gas stations
  • 05:05 get robbed all the time,
  • 05:07 and police presence is good, so they're happy to feed me
  • 05:09 a little bit and give me some beverage
  • 05:12 just for me coming in there.
  • 05:14 Similarly, David's men were acting in effect as police
  • 05:17 officers and what happened is, is that when David was running
  • 05:20 low on provisions he went to one fella named Nabal, which means
  • 05:25 fool, and if anyone ever lived up to his name, he did,
  • 05:28 and he asked him if he could help him out a little bit.
  • 05:31 It's the equivalent of a tip. Is he required to tip?
  • 05:35 No.
  • 05:36 Are you required to tip the waitress or the waiter?
  • 05:39 No, but you do.
  • 05:42 But what happens is Nabal didn't and I would imagine it was
  • 05:45 because David was feeling a little rudderless, you know?
  • 05:49 He'd just lost his mentor and he's like a kite up there
  • 05:52 in the sky and he doesn't have the stability.
  • 05:55 When word gets to him that his men and he were disrespected
  • 06:00 by Nabal, David was fit to be tied, literally.
  • 06:04 Went in a rage and he said, "Every man, gird up your sword
  • 06:07 on your thigh," and David went to kill him.
  • 06:11 Think of that for a minute.
  • 06:13 This fellow in a flash of rage of disconsternation is ready

  • 06:45 There's a greater judge.
  • 06:47 In any case, as an extension of his own rage and angst,
  • 06:51 David went after him to kill him.
  • 06:53 Abigail hears of this, Nabal's wife, and she goes and brings
  • 06:57 provision and treats David very, very, very respectfully
  • 07:01 with the net result then that David's anger is waylaid.

  • 15:28 to inculcate certain things in the next generation.
  • 15:31 And in this regard, sad to say, David failed miserably.
  • 15:36 And why is that?
  • 15:38 Because David had too many sons.
  • 15:40 Twenty sons are noted in 1 and 2 Samuel,
  • 15:43 and one daughter.
  • 15:45 And beyond that, we're told that he had other wives

  • 15:53 [speaking foreign language]
  • 15:55 Moses warned, I believe, in Devarim, in Deuteronomy,

  • 16:10 And the net result is that he who could aforge

  • 17:13 "Wives, respect your husbands."
  • 17:15 And then he said, "Husbands, love your wives."
