- 01:17 David: We're so glad you joined us today, I'm David Hart.
- 01:19 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
- 01:20 Jeffrey Seif: I am Jeffrey Seif, and do you know that there is
- 01:24 a correlation between the word "disciple" and "discipline"?
- 01:29 Interior disciplines, we'll look at some of that today, yeah?
- 01:31 David: Where are you, Matthew 6?
- 01:33 Is that where you're at?
- 01:34 Jeffrey: Well, Matthew chapter 6, that's right.
- 01:35 David: Is there a theme today?
- 01:37 Jeffrey: That we do need to have a disciplined approach to
- 01:40 life and, more important than just disciplining ourselves,
- 01:44 isn't to go around and advertise,
- 01:46 "Look how holy and pious and disciplined we are."
- 01:49 It's we wanna have an internal locus of control where there's
- 01:52 discipline, where there's focus, but not go around
- 01:54 acting like we're the king of the universe.
- 01:56 Kirsten: It's interesting 'cause it's discipline with humility.
- 01:59 And we don't like that word "humility"
- 02:01 very much anymore.
- 02:02 Jeffrey: That's what I was reaching for.
- 02:04 You said in two words what I--well, I couldn't
- 02:05 say correctly in three paragraphs.
- 02:07 It is right. Very good, it is true.
- 02:09 Kirsten: It's going to be a good program.
- 02:11 Jeffrey: You should have been teaching, not me.
- 02:12 But it is true to discipline and humility.
- 02:15 David: It's from Jesus, he taught about it
- 02:16 right there in that Bible.
- 02:17 Jeffrey: He surely did and, you know, we
- 02:19 could use a little bit of both, some discipline
- 02:21 and some humility, what do you think?
- 02:23 Kirsten: Thank you for your teaching ahead of time.
- 02:24 We appreciate it. Now let's go up to the Galilee.
- 02:30 [speaking foreign language]
- 02:40 [speaking foreign language]
- 02:46 narrator: The Lord had made it quite clear.
- 02:49 There is a place for fasting, but it is not in public,
- 02:54 especially at the city gate.
- 02:57 Disfiguring the face with ashes may be rewarded with attention,
- 03:02 but the attention is the extent of the reward.
- 03:09 When fasting, do so in secret, says the Lord,
- 03:14 and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
- 03:22 Jeffrey: Just to be sure, I looked at my driver's license
- 03:26 the other day and looked at my date of birth.
- 03:31 Being reminded that I'm 54 years old,
- 03:34 it occurred to me that I didn't just start living.
- 03:38 And one of the things that I've learned in 54 years of living is
- 03:41 that things aren't always as they seem
- 03:47 and neither are people.
- 03:51 There's this little thing called pretense.
- 03:54 There's a word "ostensibly," which means intended for show.
- 03:59 There's the word "pretense."
- 04:02 That and the word "pretend" are cut from the same cloth and
- 04:06 speak to how some people present themselves as being something
- 04:11 when they're really not.
- 04:13 We all know that it happens in the world at large,
- 04:16 but isn't it rather bizarre, odd,
- 04:20 that it actually happens in the church?
- 04:23 People parade about to be a little more righteous,
- 04:28 a little more holy than they really are.
- 04:32 I'm not impressed by that.
- 04:33 Jesus isn't impressed by that.
- 04:35 He said as much when he warned against those that fast and they
- 04:39 just make their face--they make themselves to look just a
- 04:44 certain way so others round about can go,
- 04:47 "Ahh, what a righteous person.
- 04:50 What a holy person."
- 04:53 Jesus says, you know, they have the reward
- 04:55 by virtue of their so doing.
- 04:57 Payday comes every moment, that is to say what they're after is
- 05:01 wanting to impress the world, and they get payment immediately
- 05:05 for it because the world's impressed,
- 05:07 or at least the shallow people in the world.
- 05:11 If I understand the Lord correctly,
- 05:12 better it is that we do things for him,
- 05:15 not in order to garner the attention round about.
- 05:19 The truth of the matter is that when we fast,
- 05:21 when we do deny ourselves for Christ's sake,
- 05:24 we have a way of cleaning ourselves out.
- 05:27 Really, as you sit there right now, your body can be pumped
- 05:32 full of sodium from the cokes you're drinking, from caffeine
- 05:36 from the coffee, the sugar can be having effect
- 05:39 on your mind, not just your body.
- 05:41 There's so much junk in, and it affects not just the way we
- 05:45 look, the way we feel, the way we think.
- 05:49 Truth of the matter is we need to purge ourself some stuff to
- 05:52 get some new perspective: new ideas,
- 05:55 new ways of thinking, new ways of feeling.
- 05:59 Fasting has great value beyond the momentary value of
- 06:04 impressing the world how righteous we are.
- 06:07 The value of denial like this is that we can kind of get in touch
- 06:11 with ourselves, get in touch with the Lord,
- 06:15 get in touch with our body, and this pays great dividends
- 06:20 with the passage of time.
- 06:22 Oh, don't be a hypocrite, friend.
- 06:24 Jesus said, "Those that fast, they anoint
- 06:27 themselves to impress others.
- 06:29 They are, in effect, hypocrites,"
- 06:31 in chapter 6, verse 18.
- 06:34 The word "hypocrite," as I mentioned in another segment, in
- 06:36 the Hebrew comes from the word for hyena.
- 06:40 They make an absolute fool out of themselves.
- 06:43 They ruin the moment, they ruin others by
- 06:46 going around trying to impress.
- 06:49 Let me encourage you, instead, to place a personal
- 06:54 premium on holiness, righteousness.
- 06:58 Let me encourage you to absorb some spiritual disciplines:
- 07:02 prayer, fasting, charity-giving.
- 07:07 There are different ways that different people can benefit for
- 07:11 sacrificing themselves like this,
- 07:13 never mind how others can derive some benefit from us.
- 07:17 But let's remember, never, never,
- 07:18 never do it for show.
- 07:21 Let's give up various pleasures so we can pursue God's presence.
- 07:28 [speaking foreign language]
- 07:34 [speaking foreign language]
- 07:41 narrator: "No one will notice," he whispers to himself.
- 07:45 "This treasure of mine will remain a secret forever."
- 07:50 But "Not so," says the Lord.
- 07:54 "Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor
- 07:59 rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
- 08:05 For where your treasure is there your heart will be also."
- 08:15 Jeffrey: I know some people, it's all about,
- 08:18 quote, "Me and my money."
- 08:20 And they love to behold it, they love to hold it,
- 08:24 to seize it ever so close and hold it because
- 08:27 they hold it so dearly.
- 08:28 And they look, make sure no one sees
- 08:32 and they bury it, they hide it.
- 08:36 Oh, they just feel so good to possess it.
- 08:41 Jesus said, "You know, we're better served to not wanna hold
- 08:47 on so tight to the money because it does have a way of getting
- 08:51 away from us, now doesn't it?"
- 08:54 The Lord's saying, "Don't lay up for yourselves treasures on
- 08:57 earth where thieves break in and steal."
- 09:05 In another vocation, I served as a police officer in a patrol
- 09:10 division, and had more than one occasion as a peace officer to
- 09:14 deal with burglars in the middle of the night.
- 09:18 And I can assure you that people can be very creative in the way
- 09:22 they go after your assets.
- 09:26 We've learned that now, haven't we, in our culture?
- 09:30 Tragically, by the way, we've seen money just evaporate,
- 09:35 horrible, through stealth, through intrigue.
- 09:40 People work their way into our banks, money just dissipates.
- 09:43 It's horrible.
- 09:45 Some have gone to jail, some people have gotten away with it.
- 09:48 Billions of dollars have just gotten away from us.
- 09:53 Jesus said that we'd do well to invest money, not just
- 09:56 look to seize it because you can't hold it forever anyway.
- 10:01 Never, never, never, never in my life did I ever see a hearse
- 10:06 making that final drive with a U-Haul in the back of it.
- 10:10 The guy's just taking his treasures to the next world.
- 10:13 Now, I know of some pharaohs that went through all
- 10:15 kind of efforts to build these magnificent structures,
- 10:21 underneath which they went to their grave with their treasures
- 10:24 with them, and you know what?
- 10:26 People even got in there.
- 10:31 Better, friends, to be rich toward God,
- 10:33 not just to invest and holding on to all of it, but to invest
- 10:37 some of that in the kingdom.
- 10:38 Jesus talks about this, does he not?
- 10:40 Then he goes on to conclude the point,
- 10:42 saying, "You know, where your treasure is,
- 10:45 there will your heart be also."
- 10:49 And I'd like to speak to that for a moment.
- 10:51 I think that by understanding some of the original language
- 10:54 and the original culture, that expression which you probably
- 10:56 heard will make just a little more sense.
- 11:00 Talk about the heart, where your heart is,
- 11:02 you know, today if you have a heart problem,
- 11:04 you'll go to a, quote, "cardiologist," someone who
- 11:07 specializes in the heart, cardiology.
- 11:11 The word "cardo" is a heart term, and it speaks
- 11:15 of Main Street in old cities.
- 11:17 You know, the Cardo was the main street that went through town
- 11:20 and that's where everyone had their shops.
- 11:23 It's where all the business was transacted, so in the Cardo,
- 11:27 that's where you found the money.
- 11:29 The money was in the city, and the money was at the Cardo,
- 11:33 and people went there.
- 11:34 So where your treasure is, that's where your cardo was.
- 11:39 Jesus says, you know, where our treasure
- 11:42 is, that's where our heart is.
- 11:45 And a way to find out about what someone's heart's all about,
- 11:48 just look and see, to the extent you can, what they do with this
- 11:54 little thing called money.
- 11:58 Pray tell, do we wanna hoard it and hold it ever so close?
- 12:02 Or do we wanna be gracious?
- 12:03 Do we wanna be kindly disposed to love other people,
- 12:07 to advance the Lord's work?
- 12:10 Listen to me in this, if you're willing to let go of
- 12:12 some money to advance the Lord's work, you're gonna find
- 12:15 the Lord bringing some more money back in.

- 15:30 They frustrate me personally.

- 15:34 Better it is to be sharing and caring.
- 15:37 We know that to be the case, and we know as well that just not
- 15:40 everybody's like that.
- 15:43 There is a Hebrew expression called "Eyin raah," an evil eye,
- 15:49 which interestingly harks to being stingy.
- 15:51 They look at others and just don't care.
- 15:54 Conversely, there's the expression,
- 15:55 "Eyin tova," which means a good eye.
- 15:59 Yeshua, Jesus, is employing this Hebrew expression
- 16:03 here in the Matthean Gospel.
- 16:06 In Matthew chapter 6, he speaks of something that's
- 16:10 unintelligible apart from understanding
- 16:14 the Hebrew background.
- 16:16 He says, and I quote, "The lamp of the body is
- 16:18 the eye," in verse 22.
- 16:20 And in verse 23, he says, "And if the eye is bad,
- 16:23 then you know that whole body is gonna be full of darkness."
- 16:27 The point here, if you have an evil eye, an eyin raah, an
- 16:30 evil eye, then if you're stingy, it's just going to affect you
- 16:34 throughout, not just in the way you dispense your monies.
- 16:37 That this is a Jewish expression,
- 16:40 a Hebrew expression, is noted in the book of Proverbs, and Yeshua
- 16:43 is harking back to this.
- 16:45 In chapter 22, verse 9 he says, and I quote,
- 16:48 "He who has a generous eye will be blessed,
- 16:51 for he gives his bread to the poor."
- 16:54 In other words, you see someone in need and you
- 16:57 wanna respond to it.
- 16:59 The Lord says if we're that way.
- 17:02 You've perhaps heard the expression,
- 17:04 "He--we'd do well to share our bread with the hungry.
- 17:09 We'd do well to be responsive to needs round about,
- 17:12 to people round about."
- 17:14 Not everyone's like that.
- 17:15 Some people are just selfish to the core and they hurt other
- 17:19 people by their indifference.
- 17:22 It should not be so among us.
- 17:25 When Yeshua instructs disciples for what it is to be Christian,
- 17:30 hear me, it's not just about creeds, it's about deeds.
- 17:34 It's about doing good in the world.
- 17:36 It's about being kindly disposed.
- 17:39 It's about caring and sharing.
- 17:42 And if we're generous, we give to the poor,
- 17:45 we help others, we tithe, we give offerings,
- 17:48 if our eye is good, our whole body will be full of light
- 17:54 because we're caring and sharing and that lovingness about us
- 17:57 draws others into that vortex, into that way of being.
- 18:01 And we're just a delight to be around because
- 18:03 we're caring, sharing people.
- 18:05 Conversely, if we're not, if we're just Mr. and Mrs. Scrooge,
- 18:09 you know, we're just all about coveting my money.
- 18:12 It's all about me and my stuff, if I understand the Lord

- 18:18 we're blind, and it imposes a kind of darkness in the body.
- 18:23 You've ever heard the expression,

- 18:56 and a hundredfold, and you're gonna see,
- 18:58 because you have an eyin tova, a good eye,

- 19:35 Even a 2 1/2-year-old knows what you taught today.
- 19:40 It's simple, it's basic, way of living.
- 19:44 Jeffrey: Listen, I think if we would just follow what our
- 19:46 parents told us in nursery school.
- 19:50 In our nursery school and kindergarten, teachers taught
- 19:52 us that would be a good key to success in life right there.
- 19:55 David: It makes us proud grandparents
- 19:57 or parents with our kids.
- 19:59 Kirsten: To get some of the--but you really
- 20:01 taught--Jesus was teaching some basic human things that,
- 20:04 unfortunately, some of us just don't get: to share,
- 20:08 to be nice to each other, and to be kind, things like that.
- 20:13 Jeffrey: Yes, and that kindness opens up heaven's door
- 20:17 in ways that greed pushes away.
- 20:20 Because God is kind.
- 20:21 He's compassionate, revealed as such in the older Testament,
- 20:25 incarnated as such in the New and the person of Jesus.
- 20:29 And when we're caring and sharing,
- 20:31 we have a way of opening up blessings into our own lives
- 20:35 that wouldn't otherwise be there.
- 20:37 Now, there's different ways to do that.
- 20:38 We wanna make sure that we do do that and,
- 20:41 by the way, having said that, if you would be gracious and kindly
- 20:45 disposed to sow an investment in this ministry,
- 20:49 I believe God would bless you for it,
- 20:51 inasmuch as he's blessed me and us for caring and sharing and
- 20:55 investing in the kingdom.
- 20:56 When I ask for an offering, I don't--it's not
- 20:59 that I don't put into the plate.
- 21:00 I endeavor to be a giver with tithes and offerings, and I've
- 21:03 found that it's better to be a blessing
- 21:06 than it is to be blessed.
- 21:07 And we do good to care to share.
- 21:10 Kirsten: You also taught on the principle, and this is very
- 21:12 interesting, I love this, that the lamp--or that the eye
- 21:16 is a lamp of the body.
- 21:18 And I've looked up scientific research on that also, and
- 21:21 doctors can look at someone's eyes to see
- 21:23 if they're healthy or not.
- 21:25 It's just fascinating, and our oldest daughter-in-law,
- 21:27 both of our girls, but our oldest daughter-in-law,
- 21:30 I always say, "You have the most sparkly eyes."
- 21:32 And I said, "She has God eyes."
- 21:34 And I see what comes out of her.
- 21:36 It's just very interesting for Jesus to teach that.
- 21:38 He created our bodies, he created the eye, and you
- 21:41 can read so much of a person if they're sharing and caring.
- 21:44 Jeffrey: To that point, you know, you see
- 21:46 some of these magazines, these models in "Vogue" or
- 21:48 whatever, they look like death warmed over.
- 21:49 Nice figures, nice clothing, but the eyes'll

- 23:17 David: There's not a whole lot out there today

- 23:20 The Levitt Letter is free for you.
- 23:22 Kirsten, you write every month in the Levitt Letter.
- 23:25 Kirsten: I do, and I write an article every month.
- 23:26 Dave, you and I answer viewers' mail, there's a
- 23:30 crossword puzzle in every Levitt Letter and a personal letter.
- 23:34 Here's the thing: it's free for you to receive,
- 23:37 but it costs us money.
- 23:39 It costs the ministry money to send out.
- 23:41 We have some wonderful people that say, "You know what?
- 23:43 I would love to buy some Levitt Letters to send to people."
- 23:46 A lot of prisoners receive our publications, and if that's laid
- 23:50 on your heart to help other people receive this wonderful
- 23:53 periodical, the Levitt Letter, with the great information about
- 23:57 Israel, if the Lord lays it on your heart, get in touch
- 24:00 with the ministry and we'll get you to the right person.
- 24:03 Jeffrey: You know, it reminds me, salvation
- 24:04 is free, but still someone had to pay for it.
- 24:08 And the magazine.
- 24:11 If people like the program on Jewish views,
- 24:14 then if you like that, the magazine,
- 24:16 it's like a--it's a news magazine with dozens and dozens
- 24:20 and dozens, articles, cartoons, things for and about Israel,
- 24:25 the Middle East, Bible prophecy, the news
- 24:28 behind the news, and it's free.
- 24:29 Of course, we print it and send it,
- 24:32 and those that donate help--take care of all that.
- 24:35 But we're all about getting the good news through the eyes of
- 24:37 the Jews out to yous, and so thank you for helping us.
- 24:39 David: Dramatic reenactments, your teaching
- 24:41 in Israel, not free.
- 24:43 Jeffrey: No, no, no, no, no. David: We need help.
- 24:45 Jeffrey: And that's the distinguishing
- 24:46 characteristics of the program.
- 24:48 It's not just the pontificating from a minister.
- 24:51 It's the dramatic reenactments, and we write--we like to give
- 24:55 value added to what we do and if you find value in what we do,
- 24:58 please help us do it and we'd appreciate.
- 25:01 Kirsten: We have more next week to come and we appreciate
