  • 04:38 People heard that he healed and they were despairing.
  • 04:41 They were vexed, perplexed, they needed some help and they heard

  • 04:48 Not just words, but deeds, but because he was kindly disposed
  • 04:52 toward them, because they benefited by virtue of their
  • 04:55 brief association with them, they were a mind to come to this
  • 05:00 place and hear what he had to say.
  • 05:04 And what is this place?
  • 05:07 Well, there's the Galilee on one side, the mount where the
  • 05:10 so-called Sermon of the Mount was transacted on the other.
  • 05:14 Personally, the term, "Sermon on the Mount" doesn't abide with
  • 05:17 me, in part because it just sounds so boring, like, "Sermon
  • 05:21 on the Mount" as if Jesus is there, lecturing people.
  • 05:25 Actually, I prefer "Torah from the Top."
  • 05:29 And the word "Torah" is a Hebrew word for teaching.
  • 05:34 There, Yeshua went up to the mountain and he opened his mouth
  • 05:37 and I think we'd do well to begin to consider exactly what
  • 05:39 he had to say.
  • 05:42 Let me ask you a question.
  • 05:44 Inasmuch as Yeshua, Jesus, opened up his mouth to speak to
  • 05:47 them, can you be at a place in your life, yes, your very, very,
  • 05:53 very busy life, where you can open up your heart to listen, to
  • 05:59 listen deeply, not to me, but to what the Lord might be saying to
  • 06:04 you as you examine with me the essence and the substance of
  • 06:10 what it means to be authentically Christian or
  • 06:14 Christ-like in this world?
  • 06:18 The reason why I say that is because churches can and do, and
  • 06:22 understandably so, develop various creeds but here we hear
  • 06:27 from the boss himself about what it means to be Christian.
  • 06:31 I've often said that if you were on an ocean liner and you just
  • 06:34 opened up the Bible and cut out Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7,
  • 06:38 stuffed it in a bottle, put a cork on it and threw it
  • 06:41 overboard, and if someone on some desert island somewhere who
  • 06:45 was marooned on a beach saw this bottle sweep onto the shore and
  • 06:49 opened it up, and if they read it, if they knew nothing about
  • 06:53 Jesus beforehand, just by reading this so-called Sermon on
  • 06:57 the Mount and coming to terms with it, they could understand
  • 07:00 what it means to be essentially a follower of Jesus.
  • 07:06 It's an important story, this so-called Sermon on the Mount.

  • 08:32 Jeffrey: What did the Lord say when he opened up the Sermon
  • 08:33 on the Mount?
  • 08:35 He goes on record with, and I quote, "Blessed are the poor
  • 08:37 in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the meek."
  • 08:43 I've asked myself on more than one occasion, "Pray tell, what's
  • 08:47 the blessing in being all miserable?"
  • 08:51 Well, first of all, by way of response, there's not a whole
  • 08:55 lot of blessing in being miserable.
  • 08:57 The point here is that what we can be blessed about is the fact
  • 09:00 that the poor are going to be rewarded, the meek are going
  • 09:04 to inherit.
  • 09:06 The point is we can be blessed because there's a blessing
  • 09:09 that's coming because if we come God's way, he comes our way.
  • 09:13 He delivers us, he helps us.
  • 09:16 He lifts people up out of dire straits.
  • 09:19 And it's for that reason that we can be blessed.
  • 09:23 That's Jesus' point, if I understand him correctly.
  • 09:27 I think the word "blessed" by the way, can somewhat obscure
  • 09:29 the point.
  • 09:32 The reason why I say that is the "blessed" expression in the
  • 09:35 English Bible comes by way of the Greek "makarios," which
  • 09:39 itself is better rendered from the Hebrew "ashreí" which means
  • 09:43 not blessed in some religious sense, but it's the
  • 09:46 word "happy."
  • 09:48 Happy are the poor, happy are the disenfranchised.
  • 09:51 Not because there's great happiness in being poor and
  • 09:54 disenfranchised, but when we're born anew we're born of the Son,
  • 09:58 we become a King's relative and there are blessings.
  • 10:02 He's not gonna leave us just wrapped around the axle.
  • 10:06 That's his point.
  • 10:08 And, by the way, the point that Jesus makes in the opening here
  • 10:11 in the Sermon on the Mount is very much akin to a point he
  • 10:13 makes in Psalm chapter 1 which I'm gonna show you right now.
  • 10:18 Jeffrey: "Blessed is the man," says the Psalmist, "who walks
  • 10:21 not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor who stands
  • 10:25 in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law
  • 10:28 of the Lord."
  • 10:30 You might have heard that before.
  • 10:32 In the Hebrew it begins like the Sermon on the Mount, "ashreí
  • 10:36 ha-ish," "happy is the man" who walks with the Lord, who doesn't
  • 10:41 associate with the unscrupulous.
  • 10:44 And why can this person be happy?
  • 10:47 Oh, hear this.
  • 10:49 It is such a good word, especially for today.
  • 10:52 The Psalmist says this person is like "a tree planted by rivers
  • 10:55 of water, that brings forth fruit in its season."
  • 10:59 He describes his well, that it takes roots deep
  • 11:02 under the ground.
  • 11:04 Above ground, there can be, you know, lack of rain, there can be
  • 11:09 scorching heat, there can be difficulty but this man, whose
  • 11:13 delight is in the Lord and his ways and his people, he is
  • 11:16 connected to a source that gives him nourishment, even if it's
  • 11:19 not available in the general environment.
  • 11:23 The reason why I say that and the reason why I think the Lord
  • 11:26 said this is because people can find themselves bested
  • 11:30 by circumstances.
  • 11:33 This surely was the case in Jesus' day and today as well.
  • 11:36 Goodness, we inhabit a world that's wracked by all kinds
  • 11:39 of problems.
  • 11:41 That's the bad news.
  • 11:44 But this is the good news, and the good news according to
  • 11:47 Yeshua, Jesus, here on the Sermon on the Mount is that
  • 11:50 God's got a good plan for you.
  • 11:53 That's the word of the Psalms as well that if we walk with God,
  • 11:55 if we take him seriously, then similarly, he is going to walk
  • 11:59 with us and provide for us, difficulties in
  • 12:02 life notwithstanding.
  • 12:05 This is, in effect, the good news.
  • 12:09 And by the way, the term "good news" in Hebrew, "bsowrah,"
  • 12:15 sounds like a religious term, the good news.
  • 12:17 Bsowrah comes from the Hebrew "basar" which means flesh.
  • 12:22 That is to say, substance.
  • 12:24 It's not just flowery rhetoric.

  • 16:37 What does the Lord mean when he tells the disciples that
  • 16:41 they're light, that they're salt?

  • 16:54 It's not a very good story but to follow up and say,
  • 16:57 "Listen, you're the light of the world."
  • 17:00 It's an interesting juxtaposition of themes,
  • 17:03 it seems to me.
  • 17:05 And what I gather from it is that the suffering, the trials
  • 17:08 that we can experience, produce something in us that enable
  • 17:15 others to see something in us and thus to then have hope
  • 17:20 and direction through us.
  • 17:24 Why do I say that?
  • 17:26 Well, I didn't say it.
