“The Gibeonites”
Because of deception, Joshua’s integrity is severely tested when he faces the decision to either break his vow or keep it under false pretenses with negative long-term consequences. We, too, face deceivers determined to trick us, and we need to pray to the Lord for discernment.

- 07:33 found 56 jars, the handles of which were marked with "Gibeon,"

- 07:44 A people once lived here, but now it's been covered up
- 07:47 by the sands of time through the ages, but the story
- 07:51 emerges in the biblical pages.
- 07:53 We're told in chapter 9, and turn with me please, in verse 3,

- 08:03 and they were concerned.
- 08:06 They didn't want to get annihilated, so they

- 08:11 We're told in the text what I just told you in my narrative,
- 08:14 that they presented themselves to the Hebrews, saying that,
- 08:18 "We're from a faraway place."
- 08:22 We're told in verse 5, "Vechol lechem tzeidam yavesh,"
- 08:28 that their provision was dry.
- 08:31 The bread was dry, we're told.
- 08:34 "Hayah nikkudim," and it became crumbs.

- 08:42 they provided evidences thereof.
- 08:44 And what were they after in the process of so doing?
- 08:47 They wanted a treaty.
- 08:51 We're told in verse 6, as we read on, what they say,

- 08:59 "We've come from a faraway place."

- 09:20 They're referred to as Suzerain treaties.
- 09:23 A smaller, weaker entity makes peace with the larger

- 09:31 Now, if you were involved in some kind of contract and you
- 09:36 discovered that the other party entered into it deceitfully,
- 09:41 it wouldn't be beyond the pale of reason for you

- 09:49 there was murmuring in the camp.
- 09:51 They weren't happy campers, if you will, but still

- 14:01 Maybe they don't keep their word, just little things.
- 14:06 What if those little things aren't that little?
- 14:10 When I think of something that little, I'm reminded of the fact
- 14:14 that it factors really large in the story of Joshua,
- 14:19 where when we're at Gibeon, we're dealing with those
- 14:23 who dwell therein, the Gibeonites.
- 14:25 We learn that there's no such thing as a little thing when
- 14:29 it comes to someone keeping their word.
- 14:35 Interestingly, it's described in the Bible.
- 14:38 A pious person is someone who keeps their word.
- 14:41 They keep a vow even to their own harm.
- 14:47 The Bible's a great story. We're looking at one here.
- 14:50 To recap it, Joshua enters into a contract with those from
- 14:57 Gibeon, and it is a contract made by deceit, by stealth.
- 15:02 He was snookered. It's interesting, by the way.
- 15:04 A man who showed himself to be so very strategic in his battle
- 15:08 at Ai is duped by a strategic people here.
- 15:12 And he realizes it, and they realize it, and it leaves a sour
- 15:17 taste in his and their, that is, the people of Israel's mouths.
- 15:21 Nevertheless, Joshua opts to keep his word.
- 15:27 Why is that there in the biblical text?
- 15:29 When I think of seven years of conflict, major conflict, things
- 15:33 big, medium, and small, why is it something that's so small
- 15:37 as this is given a considerable amount of
- 15:40 attention in a book like this?
- 15:43 I think it's because it's not small at all.
- 15:45 That if Israel is going to be successful,
- 15:49 it's going to have something to do with the value system
- 15:52 that resonates within Israelites.
- 15:56 That is to say, a Judeo--what we today refer to as a
- 15:59 Judeo-Christian ethic to be successful in life.
- 16:05 And when I think in Joshua, of course you've heard me to
- 16:07 repeat, "More than a conquerer," when I think of him, I think
- 16:10 there are a salient virtues within him that sets him apart
- 16:15 from others, one of which is an intransigency, that is to say,
- 16:21 will not be moved from keeping his word.
- 16:26 Now, I'm gonna look at the Word in a second, but before I get
- 16:28 there, I wanna tell you just as a dad who raised boys, I told
- 16:32 my sons, not that they're gonna listen, but at least
- 16:35 I communicated to them, "You're gonna meet a girl.
- 16:37 She's real cool, real hot, real rich, real biased.
- 16:40 Whatever it is, if she says she's gonna meet you
- 16:42 at 5 o'clock and she's not there, dump her.
- 16:46 You might think she's great. I think she's a Venus flytrap.
- 16:48 You're gonna land on her and get devoured."
- 16:51 I don't want my boys being with people that aren't good
- 16:55 for their word, even in small things.
- 16:57 Now, of course I realize things come up.
- 16:59 That's why God created cell phones.
- 17:01 People can communicate.
- 17:02 But with a lack thereof, if it's just someone who's not known to
- 17:05 be good for their word, I don't want them in my family system.
- 17:09 The extent to which I can control that as the
- 17:11 boys grow up is open to question, but at least
- 17:13 I wanted them to hear it from me.
- 17:16 And you know, Yeshua said as much too.
- 17:19 He says, you know, let your yes be yes and your no be no.
- 17:22 You shouldn't even need to swear, in his, I call it,
- 17:25 Torah from the Top.
- 17:26 Others call it the Sermon on the Mount.
- 17:29 He is reflecting on the essence and substance, the constitution
- 17:33 for a Christian life, a walk with the Lord.
- 17:35 And foremost in all of that is people mean what they say
- 17:40 and they say what they mean.
- 17:43 When people swear, "I swear to God I'm gonna do this.
- 17:45 I swear, I swear," they're coming from a value deficit.
- 17:48 It should be their word is sufficient.
- 17:50 They say they're gonna do it and they do it.
- 17:52 But if you have to embellish it with, "I promise I'll do
- 17:54 this and that," it means in you're mind you don't
- 17:57 think the person you're talking to is taking you
- 17:58 seriously, thus the need to embellish.
- 18:01 And why is that?
- 18:02 'Cause you've calculated the fact that your word doesn't
- 18:05 have equity in their mind, and there's a reason for that.
- 18:08 You probably broke it down.
- 18:09 Well, I wanna look here in the text.
- 18:11 I'll read it in Hebrew first. I'm in chapter 9 and verse 19.
- 18:15 And the word is out to keep the word, and the people don't
- 18:19 like it, but the prince's way in, that is to say,
- 18:22 Joshua sets the tone as the principal leader and then
- 18:26 his lieutenants carry out his word.
- 18:29 You'll see people are murmuring in verse 18, but in verse 19,
- 18:33 "Vaiyomeru chol hannesi'im 'el kol ha-Edah."
- 18:36 All the princes of the congregation said to the people,
- 18:42 "Anachnu nishbanu lahem Adonai."
- 18:45 We have sworn to the Lord, "Elohei Yisrael,"
- 18:49 the God of Israel.
- 18:50 "But we promised.
- 18:52 We gave our word to the God of Israel," they say.
- 18:55 It's very, very interesting.
- 18:56 "Ve'attah lo nuchal lingoa bahem."
- 19:00 "Now therefore, we may not touch them."
- 19:04 That is to say, we cannot go back on our word.
- 19:08 It reminds me of the Lord.
- 19:10 He says if others are faithless, nevertheless, he is faithful.
- 19:15 And to that end, let me just share a comment, a pivot to
- 19:19 a principle, what it means to be Christian essentially.
- 19:23 You know, you hear in the text Rabbi Paul talks about
- 19:26 confessing with your lips that Jesus is Lord.
- 19:29 We talk about the sinners prayer today.
- 19:32 I like it more as a commitment to allegiance to a Sovereign.
- 19:36 That is, we call him Lord.
- 19:39 There's a social contract there that we as a subject,
