 - 00:50 I'm David Hart.
 - 00:52 Kirsten Hart: I am Kirsten Hart. Jeffrey Seif: Jeffrey Seif.

 - 00:55 and today it's all about Joseph.
 - 00:58 Kirsten: There are a lot of dramatic elements, if
 - 01:00 I can say the word "soap opera."
 - 01:03 I mean, it's kinda like drama, drama, drama,
 - 01:06 Joseph's family and his life.
 - 01:08 Jeffrey: This isn't just deliverance in general.
 - 01:10 It's deliver me from my family in particular, the brothers.
 - 01:14 Oy, it's horrible, horrible.
 - 01:16 Kirsten: Oy. I like that.
 - 01:18 Well, it's jealousy.
 - 01:19 Jeffrey: Yes, the seething discontent in that system.
 - 01:23 Listen, not everyone comes from perfect families
 - 01:25 like me, you, and you.
 - 01:27 Sometime there is trouble.
 - 01:29 Kirsten: So much more about Joseph's life.
 - 01:31 Now let's go to our dramatic reenactment, where we see
 - 01:34 how jealousy can fester within brothers.
 - 01:40 announcer: This is the story of Joseph the son of Jacob.
 - 01:45 As a young man Joseph tended sheep along
 - 01:48 with his half-brothers in the land of Canaan.
 - 01:51 This sweeping vista now belonged to his father.
 - 01:56 His great-grandfather, Abraham, had once sojourned here
 - 02:01 across the very same land.
 - 02:04 Joseph was a favorite son of his father because he was among the
 - 02:09 youngest of the brothers, and Joseph's brothers despised him,
 - 02:14 for he wore a handsome coat affectionately
 - 02:17 made for him by his loving father.
 - 02:21 ♪♪♪
 - 02:26 announcer: Clearly, Joseph's dreams had
 - 02:28 set his brothers on edge.
 - 02:31 It was bad enough, they thought, that he was
 - 02:34 their father's favorite son.
 - 02:37 Now he had delusions of grandeur.
 - 02:41 male: [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 02:52 ♪♪♪

 - 03:05 ♪♪♪
 - 03:07 male: [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 03:21 announcer: And so it was that Joseph was sold to a group
 - 03:24 of Ishmaelite traders for 20 pieces of silver.
 - 03:29 Joseph was bound for Egypt, while his brothers reveled
 - 03:33 in the notion they would never see him again.
 - 03:38 ♪♪♪
 - 03:48 ♪♪♪
 - 03:59 Jeffrey: Personally, I think the robe
 - 04:02 was just the tip of the iceberg.
 - 04:05 There were tensions going on for years and the robe
 - 04:08 thing just pushed it over.
 - 04:10 You know, something about the story I trust,
 - 04:13 I wanna talk about the gory.
 - 04:14 That is, look at some of the details that
 - 04:16 aren't happy to see, but they're there.
 - 04:18 We know that these tensions exist in the world.
 - 04:23 Do they exist in the Word?
 - 04:25 The answer is yes and the story is told.
 - 04:28 Well, we saw the story in the previous program where Ya'akov,
 - 04:32 Jacob, is sent out with a blessing, and he goes
 - 04:35 and as you fill in the blanks he's blessed.
 - 04:39 He's married and develops a family in Padanaram
 - 04:42 up there in Syria, but then he comes home, and
 - 04:46 there is tensions among the boys.
 - 04:48 Jacob has an experience with God,
 - 04:51 but the boys are wild, unruly.
 - 04:53 Now, when you look in the 37th chapter, and I'm just zooming
 - 04:55 in right there, we're told in chapter 37, verse 3,
 - 04:59 "W'yis'rael ahav et-yosef."
 - 05:03 "Israel loved Joseph more than his brothers."
 - 05:08 Now, I questioned that at one level.
 - 05:10 I relate to this at one level.
 - 05:12 First of all, my Hebrew name is Yosef, which is Joseph,
 - 05:17 and my father's Hebrew name is Ya'akov, Jacob.
 - 05:22 His English name is Jack, so I've known the story for years.
 - 05:28 What is it that set in motion this kind of dysfunction and
 - 05:33 tension that would cause these boys not just to betray
 - 05:38 their father--they're gonna lie to their father, and
 - 05:41 Jacob knows something about that, doesn't he?
 - 05:43 If you don't recall it, just go back to the previous program.
 - 05:46 Jacob had his youthful missteps.
 - 05:51 These boys, as well, will lie to their father
 - 05:53 and give up their brother as debt.
 - 05:59 I wanna speak to you for a moment about family dysfunction.
 - 06:02 Before we get out of this program you're gonna see how
 - 06:05 the family is reunited, so there is good news from ancient Jews.
 - 06:09 There is a way that God brings them back together again,
 - 06:12 and it's good news because it's a redemptive story.
 - 06:15 It's a story about deliverance.
 - 06:18 I wanna put the pause on that for a second just to raise the
 - 06:20 question with you: in your own family systems are you
 - 06:23 dealing with betrayal, disappointment, intrigue,
 - 06:28 brothers against brothers, children against parents?
 - 06:33 It is so very ubiquitous, and it's promised.
 - 06:38 Yeshua says it's noted in the gospels there, an
 - 06:41 account of the gospel, individual families will go
 - 06:44 awry because of the testimony of Yeshua.
 - 06:48 My wife and I, fairing from a Jewish background,
 - 06:51 have seen displeasure in our family systems because
 - 06:54 of decisions that we've made.
 - 06:56 It didn't result in this kind of tension, but certainly
 - 06:59 there were disappointments.
 - 07:01 If you're dealing with disappointment in your family,
 - 07:03 if you're dealing with betrayal, there is a
 - 07:06 continuum where people just disappoint people and
 - 07:08 then there is out and outright betrayal.
 - 07:11 These brothers gave up Joey for dead.
 - 07:14 Really, they just sent him off into slavery, and
 - 07:16 they wanted to finish him off for all intents and purposes,
 - 07:20 but God brought it back to life.
 - 07:24 It didn't happen right away, but it happened.
 - 07:27 At the outset I wanna let you know that what happened in
 - 07:30 this Word can similarly happen in your world.
 - 07:35 Stay with us as we consider the story of Joseph
 - 07:39 and his reconciliation with his brothers.
 - 07:43 ♪♪♪
 - 08:01 male: [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 08:21 ♪♪♪
 - 08:32 ♪♪♪
 - 08:42 Jeffrey: His brothers threw him under the bus.
 - 08:45 We looked at that.
 - 08:47 He was given up for dead, sold into slavery,
 - 08:49 erets Mizraim in the land of Egypt.
 - 08:52 He didn't have a friend, he didn't know a soul, but there
 - 08:55 was someone who knew his soul, and Yosef--they say whatever
 - 08:59 doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
 - 09:00 If it doesn't make you bitter, it will make you better,
 - 09:02 and Joseph just showed himself to have a different
 - 09:05 kind of constitution, and he is the kind of fellow
 - 09:07 he arises even in adversarial circumstances.
 - 09:12 Fascinating to me here is that he, in effect, was promoted.
 - 09:18 It says in Hebrew, and I'm looking in chapter 41, verse 39.
 - 09:24 [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 09:27 Which translates.
 - 09:29 [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 09:31 And the king says, "You will be over all my house."
 - 09:38 This isn't just a promotion.
 - 09:40 You know, it feels great to get a promotion.
 - 09:41 I know when I get promoted it feels better
 - 09:43 than when I get demoted.
 - 09:45 How about that?
 - 09:46 We all get a little bit of both, but to be able to land a good
 - 09:49 job, I mean, resonates with a male, certainly with a female,
 - 09:52 I'd imagine, but this is more than just a promotion.
 - 09:55 It is providence, and it's not just a picture for these pages
 - 10:01 here in considering deliverance.
 - 10:04 We're looking at a picture for the ages.
 - 10:07 Why do I say that? Think of this for a moment.
 - 10:11 Rejected by your brothers, given up for dead, for all intents and
 - 10:17 purposes, finding a welcome in the house of the Gentiles
 - 10:23 and there arising and then eventually being reunited
 - 10:30 with your brothers, who at first aren't going to
 - 10:32 recognize you and then they will.
 - 10:35 Now, that's a story to come, but I think you get the gist,
 - 10:38 and I think you get the drift, and I hope you get the
 - 10:41 connection, because when we're looking at deliverance
 - 10:46 here in the Old Testament we're seeing a prophetic
 - 10:52 picture of deliverance in the New Testament.
 - 10:57 Pray, tell. Let's think for a minute.
 - 10:58 Someone who was rejected by his brothers.
 - 11:03 They didn't quite get him.
 - 11:04 They were antagonistic toward him.
 - 11:06 Not all of them, but it happened, so he is carted off,
 - 11:09 if you will, but he emerges even against all odds
 - 11:14 and is going to be recognized by the Gentiles, and
 - 11:19 he's going to arise and have power.
 - 11:22 And then eventually he is going to be
 - 11:24 reconnected with his brothers.
 - 11:26 Oh, and by the way, this fellow in the New Testament
 - 11:30 is the Savior of the world.
 - 11:33 This fellow is the Savior of the world in this Word.
 - 11:41 What's the point? What's the application?
 - 11:44 I've already given a Christological application.
 - 11:46 That is, I've directed your attention to the story of Jesus,
 - 11:50 and I think it's an appropriate read, and I'll develop that a
 - 11:53 little more, but you might be at a place in your own life
 - 11:57 where you're experiencing disappointment, rejection.
 - 12:00 You've been thrown under the bus, and you're wondering,
 - 12:03 "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
 - 12:06 Don't give up the ghost.
 - 12:10 We've seen already, if you follow the series--if
 - 12:13 you're just tuning in now, go back to the beginning.

 - 12:31 God turns it around for his glory.
 - 12:34 It looks a little gory, but I know someone that can
 - 12:36 turn it into glory, and I want you to know him, too.

 - 14:16 He orders his attendants to leave.
 - 14:19 Tears fall.
 - 14:21 His aching heart tells him it's over.
 - 14:24 This is Joseph's finest hour.
 - 14:29 ♪♪♪
 - 14:34 male: [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 15:02 [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 15:21 [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 15:32 all: [speaking in Hebrew]
 - 15:40 Jeffrey: "Ani Yosef." Translates as "I am Joseph."
 - 15:49 When I look at the clip you just saw, I cry,
 - 15:53 and I'm not a real crying kinda guy.
 - 15:56 My wife wishes I would be more in touch with my feelings,
 - 15:59 and I really am working at it, but I'm more of a type A.
 - 16:03 I don't just emote all that often, but not only do
 - 16:07 I honestly shed a tear when I see it, whenever I read the
 - 16:11 story I get emotional, and I'm not the type,
 - 16:15 and I can't fully explain why.
 - 16:17 And, of course, you're not watching TV for me to get off
 - 16:19 my chest the inner workings of my soul.
 - 16:22 I only mention this to say that I find something moving here
 - 16:27 when he who is the Savior reveals himself to his brothers
 - 16:32 who had given up on him, who actually disappointed their
 - 16:36 father by pushing their brother away.
 - 16:39 And that means something to me at that level,
 - 16:41 and I'll interpret it.
 - 16:43 I'll translate that.
 - 16:45 Maybe the story means something to me as well
 - 16:47 because my name is Yosef, but that's overly simplistic.
 - 16:50 No, there is a story of redemption and deliverance here.
 - 16:56 One could argue I'm beating the horse, I already made the point,
 - 17:00 but there is an old saying, "If it's not worth saying
 - 17:02 a hundred times, it's not worth saying once."
 - 17:05 Not only does it interest me here when the deliverer shows
 - 17:10 himself to his brothers, not only do I find merit in
 - 17:15 this story, but my own life in ministry is to help my brothers,
 - 17:20 to show them the deliverer.
 - 17:24 I'm not echoing my own sentiments.
 - 17:26 It was a rabbi who came to faith named Paul who said,
 - 17:29 "My heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel
 - 17:32 is that they might come to the Messiah."
 - 17:34 Now, the average Christian today, many could care less.
 - 17:37 That's God's honest truth, and I'm not trying to get negative,
 - 17:39 but let's just call an ace and ace and a spade a spade.
 - 17:42 That to actually help advocate for Israel's Messiah amongst
 - 17:45 Israel's people, that has not been on
 - 17:49 the radar in church history.
 - 17:51 Minimally, to varying degrees, it's on the radar now.
 - 17:55 Maybe it's gotten into your heart, and it resonates with
 - 17:57 you, the story of helping the brothers see the deliverer.
 - 18:03 To do that, I say with our ministry here, "Zola Levitt
 - 18:07 Presents," Zola in his day and me in mine and all the teachers
 - 18:10 we have here--it's really not a one-man gig.
 - 18:12 It's all about helping Jesus people--helping Jewish people
 - 18:15 come to know Jesus and helping Jesus people come to know Jews,
 - 18:20 to the end that they might look at him and go, "Oh, my goodness.
 - 18:23 The deliverer, in fact, is my brother."
 - 18:28 People think today that Jesus is somebody else's brothers,
 - 18:30 certainly in the Jewish world.
 - 18:33 Jews don't understand that Jesus was a Jew, the apostles were
 - 18:37 Jewish, and even that the story took place in Judea.
 - 18:40 And even if it's intellectually known still, the Christian story
 - 18:45 looks like something that's unfit for Jewish consumption,
 - 18:49 partly not just because the church lost sight of the Jewish
 - 18:52 roots of their own faith, but many, sadly, were anti-Jewish.
 - 18:56 That was then, this is now. We represent the tip of a spear.
 - 19:03 The only reason why I'm here right now--I don't have enough
 - 19:06 money in my pocket to pay the rent for airtime.
 - 19:08 The reason why I'm here right now is because people care about
 - 19:12 this story and because people care about helping us tell it.
 - 19:16 It's a we thing. It's not a me thing.
 - 19:19 I, in effect, am just an ambassador on your behalf
 - 19:23 and, by the way, this is not a fundraising program.
 - 19:25 That I, in effect, still I'm an ambassador on your behalf.
 - 19:29 We're looking at the Hebrew Bible, we're looking
 - 19:32 at deliverance, and the issue is guess who we're talking about.
 - 19:40 I think there is ample testation--attestation to the
 - 19:44 truth that we're talking about Yeshua, and I'm so glad
 - 19:48 that this story is speaking to you.
 - 19:53 David: We all know the story of Joseph, but I think there
 - 19:56 are some new things, some new insight maybe
 - 19:58 we can all learn today.
 - 19:59 I don't think his life was perfect.
 - 20:02 I think he went through some rollercoaster rides
 - 20:04 in his journey.
 - 20:05 Jeffrey: Yes, I don't think he was perfect.
 - 20:07 I don't know anybody that is except Jesus, but I look
 - 20:11 at the biblical text, think he was a little bratty,
 - 20:13 you know, showing off.
 - 20:14 "Hey, brothers. What do you think?
 - 20:15 You're all gonna bow down to me."
 - 20:17 If I had the dream, I might have kept it to myself,
 - 20:18 but whatever he was all about.
 - 20:20 I don't know that he deserved to be killed or
 - 20:22 given up for dead anyway, so--
 - 20:24 Kirsten: I think it's pretty amazing that after his brothers
 - 20:26 did that, again, I might reveal some of my true nature here,
 - 20:30 I don't think I'd be wanting to give them grain or help them,
 - 20:33 but Joseph did.
 - 20:34 And that's why he is a deliverer.
 - 20:37 He delivered his brothers from something that they,
 - 20:41 I mean, they deserved.
 - 20:42 Jeffrey: You're giving a major point.
 - 20:44 You know, at the beginning of the conversation people think,
 - 20:47 "Well, you know, in the Old Testament it's the Jew book.
 - 20:49 It's all law, an angry God.
 - 20:51 There is no grace there," but there is a kind of love
 - 20:53 and grace that's there in the Torah.
 - 20:55 It just oozes through the pores of it and, to your point,
 - 20:59 yes, you can see a lot of love and grace in him.
 - 21:01 David: It could have ended up a whole different way,
 - 21:03 and we wouldn't had the story.
 - 21:05 I'm glad it turned out the way it did.
 - 21:07 Jeffrey: Well, to that point, Dave, I think, you know, back
 - 21:10 in the day for some brother to be peeved and to say,
 - 21:13 "Wipe 'em out," God only knows that Joseph--no,
 - 21:16 not only God only knows.
 - 21:18 Everyone in Egypt knew that Joseph had the power
 - 21:20 to just--to kill 'em, you know.
 - 21:22 "Just be gone."
 - 21:23 David: There is something about forgiveness, healing,
 - 21:26 right, in families especially.
 - 21:29 Kirsten: Oh, that's good. There is.
 - 21:31 We could learn.
 - 21:32 Jeffrey: Every time I mention the story, I mention how
 - 21:34 I tear up a little bit when I see it.
 - 21:37 That moment when he reveals himself to his brothers,
 - 21:40 for me, is very, very dramatic.
 - 21:43 It's very dynamic, just the wow moment.
 - 21:48 The emotion just grips me.
 - 21:50 Kirsten: Almost, if I could go there, he had his own
 - 21:53 personal--literal band of brothers.
 - 21:55 Yeshua had his band of brothers, and they betrayed him.
 - 21:59 Joseph redeemed his group, his brothers,
 - 22:03 as Yeshua redeemed his disciples.
 - 22:06 They didn't deserve it.
 - 22:07 They denied him, they let him go to the cross, and they fled,
 - 22:12 but yet Yeshua took them back in, like Joseph
 - 22:14 took his brothers back in.
 - 22:16 Jeffrey: With that people see a prophetic typology
 - 22:18 in the Joseph story and the Jesus story.
 - 22:21 Yosef really literally means there will be another
 - 22:24 and certainly the story of Joseph points to another, and
 - 22:28 there is a story he's betrayed by his brothers, but he's their
 - 22:31 deliverer at the end of the day.
 - 22:33 They get reconciled later.
 - 22:35 Oh, we know Jesus came to the Jews.
 - 22:36 Not all received him, but a ministry like this is all about
 - 22:40 roping in--helping Jewish people and non-Jewish people
 - 22:43 come to know the Lord.
 - 22:44 Kirsten: Another great foreshadow
 - 22:46 of Messiah and Joseph.

 - 26:21 Jeffrey: Of all the tools in the devil's toolbox,
 - 26:25 jealousy may be the one that's used most of all.
 - 26:32 It exacts a toll on human experience, going back to
 - 26:35 the days of Joseph, all the way through into the modern era,
 - 26:40 but God can deliver us.
 - 26:43 Kirsten: He can. He can heal families.
 - 26:45 He can, but we need to let him do that, and Joseph was
 - 26:50 a conduit of the Holy Spirit and of God going, "I forgive you
 - 26:55 and what is in the past is not important anymore."
 - 26:59 David: Also, for us we have no idea what a family member
 - 27:01 might have in store in their life.
 - 27:03 Kirsten: Ooh, that's good. Right, who Joseph was to become.
 - 27:06 David: Love your brothers and your sisters.
 - 27:08 Jeffrey: Amen and thank you, brothers and sisters, for
 - 27:11 looking our way and as you go now,
 - 27:14 sha'alu shalom Yerushalayim.
