Caption transcript for Joseph: Dreamer/Redeemer — “Innocence and Accusation” (3/9)
- 00:31 From the pit to the palace,
- 00:34 from certain death to abundant life,
- 00:37 Joseph the patriarch
- 00:40 who pictures Messiah.
- 00:53 Shalom and welcome to our program, I'm Myles Weiss
- 00:55 and I'm Katharine Weiss.
- 00:57 And we want to welcome you to
- 00:58 Joseph - Dreamer / Redeemer
- 01:00 You know Joseph is one of the most perfect pictures of the life of Yeshua .
- 01:04 It's really true.
- 01:05 We've seen in the series so far that both Joseph and Jesus
- 01:09 were beloved of their father,
- 01:10 they're both shepherds,
- 01:12 they both were sent to their brothers,
- 01:14 they were rejected by their brothers.
- 01:16 And now we're about to see Joseph become a key player
- 01:19 in the redemption of the Jewish people and also the known world at that time.
- 01:23 A Hebrew was sent by his father to be the bread of life.
- 01:28 It says in Psalm 105:17...
- 01:35 ...that he would be able to preserve them.
- 01:37 Sometimes it comes into our life; a dream or a word
- 01:41 and it feels like it's this most amazing thing is going to happen
- 01:44 but before that there's the trying of the person.
- 01:48 And that's what happened to Joseph.
- 01:50 The Word of the LORD tried him until it was the appointed time.
- 01:54 And we see this parallel also in the Hebrew language.
- 01:58 It says (Speaking Hebrew)
- 02:02 Which means "I delight to do your will O God".
- 02:05 And Joseph, while going through these trials, is going to wind up doing the will of God
- 02:09 Just as David's greater Son, Yeshua will do the will of God
- 02:13 as well to redeem the whole world.
- 02:15 So let's pick up our story right now as Joseph goes to Egypt.
- 02:24 The caravan of traders was bound for Egypt with Joseph in tow.
- 02:29 His jealous brothers had reasoned it was a good way
- 02:33 to make some money and rid the family of this crazed dreamer.
- 02:37 It would be a long journey from the green pastures of the Patriarchs
- 02:42 to the foreign sands of the Pharaoh.
- 02:49 Once in Egypt Joseph would once again be sold
- 02:53 Now to be a slave of Potiphar, the Captain of Pharaoh's guard.
- 03:00 The story of Joseph is such a story of the struggle between good and evil.
- 03:05 And it's such a picture of Yeshua as a young man, as the suffering servant.
- 03:11 And then it would become the story of the coming king, the ruling king.
- 03:16 You know there is a conspiracy that we've been seeing here.
- 03:18 The brothers have conspired against Joseph.
- 03:21 They've thrown him in a pit.
- 03:22 And it really parallels the conspiracy in Matthew 12:14
- 03:27 where the Pharisees came to Yeshua and tried to trick him.
- 03:31 But you know, there's even an earlier one.
- 03:32 I mean, how did Joseph get down here to Egypt?
- 03:36 They sold him into slavery.
- 03:39 He was put in a pit; he was sold to the Ishmaelites who brought him to Egypt.
- 03:43 And you know what's interesting Katharine,
- 03:45 that the Bible tells us that when Yeshua was a baby
- 03:50 his parents had to take him down to Egypt
- 03:52 in order to avoid the Herodian mandate to kill every baby under 2 years old.
- 03:59 And so the son comes up out of Egypt, the Son of God.
- 04:04 And so it is with Joseph the son, is going to come up out of Egypt as a ruler.
- 04:09 You know Egypt figures so importantly in the history of Israel.
- 04:13 In fact, the future of the area includes a highway of holiness
- 04:17 in Isaiah 19 between Egypt, Assyria and Israel.
- 04:20 And so here we are in Egypt as Joseph was thrown in the pit by his brothers
- 04:25 and then sold to the Ishmaelites and then sold to the Egyptians.
- 04:28 These brothers were so full
- 04:30 of hate towards their brother
- 04:32 that they almost killed him.
- 04:35 But thank God they decided to throw him into a pit.
- 04:37 The twenty shekels is not an accident.
- 04:40 It says in Leviticus 27
- 04:43 that there's a special vow
- 04:45 that is given for twenty shekels
- 04:48 And you know, they thought that were selling him off.
- 04:51 But God was ransoming Joseph for a purpose;
- 04:55 and a purpose that was beyond him.
- 04:57 It is amazing.
- 04:59 There is a vow of consecration in Leviticus 27
- 05:01 that speaks about different ages of people that will be consecrated to the LORD
- 05:05 and the valuation that there are to be paid to the Temple for their consecration.
- 05:10 And here we have Joseph who was sold for twenty shekels
- 05:14 which is the exact amount that someone his age would be valued.
- 05:18 And so the brothers think they are getting rid of him
- 05:21 but really if you look at it from God's point of view
- 05:24 God is saying, okay, you consecrated him to me
- 05:27 and I'm going to have my way in his life.
- 05:30 And that is really a lesson for us.
- 05:33 When people do us wrong and even would throw us in a pit,
- 05:37 God has a plan to redeem us and to bring us into our destiny
- 05:41 if we keep trusting him and not turn our back on him.
- 05:45 There's such a conspiracy here.
- 05:48 The brethren are just like the Pharisees would be with Jesus.
- 05:50 Conspiring just like Herod conspiring to kill the babies of Israel.
- 05:55 And they have to go to Egypt...
- 05:57 Mary and Joseph have to go to Egypt.
- 05:58 And now here he is coming up out of Egypt.
- 06:01 Joseph's words were disbelieved.
- 06:03 They just didn't believe his words, the dreams that God gave him.
- 06:05 Just like when Yeshua was speaking and the Pharisees say,
- 06:09 Well "if" you're the Son of God,
- 06:10 or "if" this or that.
- 06:12 And they would dispute what he was saying.
- 06:13 And it's just such an amazing parallel
- 06:17 because the brothers did not want to do the dirty work themselves.
- 06:20 And so they settled on selling him to the Ishmaelites
- 06:24 just as Yeshua was sold off to the Romans by the Jewish brothers.
- 06:28 And so we see this secret history with God is building in Joseph's life.
- 06:34 He's about to be made a servant.
- 06:37 And we remember that Yeshua is spoken of in that way.
- 06:40 In fact, Philippians 2 tells us
- 06:48 who being equal with God thought it not robbery to be equal with God.
- 06:52 And yet made Himself of no reputation
- 06:54 and was obedient to death, even the death of the cross.
- 06:58 And therefore, God has exalted Him with the Name above every Name.
- 07:02 We have to go through the pit sometimes to get to the palace.
- 07:07 We're seeing that in Joseph's life
- 07:09 and we're going to see that paralleling in the life of Yeshua as well.
- 07:27 Our offer on this program...
- 07:29 Zola Levitt's booklet,
- 07:31 "The Seven Feasts of Israel"
- 07:33 as well as the popular companion booklets,
- 07:35 "The Miracle of Passover"
- 07:37 the crown jewel of Biblical Feasts,
- 07:39 and "A Christian Love Story"
- 07:42 a beautiful story of the wedding customs of Israel
- 07:44 in Messiah's time.
- 07:46 Ask for "The Feast Package"
- 07:48 You'll find these booklets
- 07:49 to be striking examples
- 07:51 of the types and shadows
- 07:52 of the Messiah, Yeshua .
- 07:54 Information well worth knowing.
- 08:02 Joseph does well in the house of Potiphar.
- 08:06 His master sees that God is with this young man from Canaan
- 08:10 because all that Joseph did worked for the good.
- 08:14 So Potiphar makes Joseph his personal aide, overseer of all his affairs.
- 08:20 And from that day forth God blessed the home and all the fields of Potiphar.
- 08:33 Joseph is brought into Potiphar's house as a servant.
- 08:37 And everything he puts his hand to prospers.
- 08:41 And in fact he's known and noted
- 08:43 as someone who has just done those wonders for the house of Potiphar.
- 08:47 No matter what he did.
- 08:48 He says even the field or in the house...whatever.
- 08:52 And I think of that scripture,
- 08:54 that God would cause us to be blessed when we're...
- 08:56 Even in our fields, and our baskets would be overflowing.
- 08:59 Because he did not turn his heart away from the LORD
- 09:03 and he turned it towards God and the dream that God had given him
- 09:06 despite what he was facing,
- 09:09 despite what he had overcome,
- 09:11 he kept on going.
- 09:13 And I think he might have even had to lay everything down
- 09:15 and just say, God, you know I am in this house
- 09:17 and whatever I do I want to give you glory.
- 09:20 So we learn the favor.
- 09:22 He increased in favor just like Jesus increased in favor.
- 09:25 And just like us.
- 09:26 God wants to pattern us the same as Jesus and Joseph.
- 09:32 No matter what the circumstances
- 09:34 that we can cause others to prosper and we will prosper there as well.
- 09:37 It reminds me of the Scripture in Isaiah 52:13
- 09:40 That speaks about
- 09:41 the LORD's hand was on Yeshua.
- 09:43 that even going up to Isaiah 53
- 09:45 when he will be crushed at the cross.
- 09:47 There's something about it that pleased the Father and pleases the LORD in that servant hood.
- 09:52 Right.
- 09:54 What happens is he's in the suffering but now he's in prosperity.
- 09:57 He's in Potiphar's house, he's blessed, everything he puts his hands to is blessed.
- 10:01 And he's a handsome man it says from his face and in his features.
- 10:06 It says a goodly man.
- 10:07 In face and features, yes.
- 10:09 And so Potiphar's wife takes a look at him and says, I want you.
- 10:13 And that is what happens.
- 10:15 And that's what happens so many times in our life
- 10:18 when we are elevated to a place of authority
- 10:21 that the enemy wants to come in through the "I" gate, or through the "lust" gate.
- 10:26 And wants to pull down the purpose.
- 10:28 And thanks be to God that caused Joseph to be able to be steadfast
- 10:35 and to leave his cloak behind as she tempted.
- 10:39 Yeah, she's trying to seduce him.
- 10:41 And in that seduction he acts righteously.
- 10:44 And reminds me again of Yeshua who was tempted in all things, yet without sin.
- 10:49 And Joseph acts that way.
- 10:51 He acts in a righteous manner.
- 10:52 He flees youthful lusts.
- 10:54 He's careful not to have anything to do with her.
- 10:56 And then he is, like Jesus, falsely accused.
- 10:59 Right, and thrown into the pit again in Potiphar's pit.
- 11:04 But God has a plan there.
- 11:06 We start to see the beginning of this "crown making" taking place
- 11:10 Remember he goes from his family, the Patriarchs, into the pit, then to Potiphar's house.
- 11:16 And now he is going to go back into prison and there's more to come.
- 11:19 An interesting thing that also parallels Jesus is that
- 11:23 Joseph did not defend himself.
- 11:25 Just as Yeshua stood before Pilot, stood before Herod.
- 11:29 And like a lamb to the slaughter he did not defend himself, he just let this unfold.
- 11:33 Can you imagine being able to do that?
- 11:35 It's hard for me to imagine.
- 11:37 But he did not defend himself and he allowed it to become what it needed to become.
- 11:41 And this is amazing to me.
- 11:43 But the word for "overseer";
- 11:46 because he became the overseer of everything that Potiphar had,
- 11:49 all the prosperity that had been brought to Potiphar,
- 11:52 that word "overseer" is just one Hebrew letter away from " Meshiach ".
- 11:56 And so there's a connection between the Anointed One
- 11:59 and the one who's in charge of someone's household.
- 12:03 And so now we see Joseph is going into prison and our story continues from there.

- 13:39 Joseph is about to be tested again by the Word.
- 13:43 Scripture says in Psalm 105...
- 13:47 And that's what we're seeing happen.
- 13:49 And he's going to come up as a righteous man.
- 13:51 We're going to see righteousness in him that is arising.
- 13:54 It reminds me of the Shabbat Service where I will pray
- 13:58 Proverbs 31, "A Virtuous Woman" over you.
- 14:01 And you'll pray Psalm 1 over me that I would be
- 14:04 a man who doesn't walk in the counsel of the ungodly.
- 14:07 Joseph is going to exemplify that.
- 14:09 And it goes on in that very Psalm and it talks about that that man will prosper.
- 14:14 And because of his commitment to God,
- 14:17 whatever God gave him,
- 14:19 whatever came against him,
- 14:21 God caused him to prosper.
- 14:23 It also says Myles, that in Potiphar's house he rose like cream.
- 14:28 It's not what comes at you
- 14:30 but it's how we respond to it.
- 14:32 And you know that word is controversial.
- 14:34 We want you to understand that we're not speaking about some magical prosperity.
- 14:38 We're talking about a disciplined Godly way of succeeding
- 14:42 because of doing things God's way, right?
- 14:44 Absolutely
- 14:45 And that's what Joseph exemplifies.
- 14:47 It reminds me of the...
- 14:49 One of the things that happens in this passage that's a slight
- 14:51 departure from the parallels between Joseph and Jesus
- 14:55 is that when Joseph was tested by Potiphar's wife,
- 14:58 as we'll see, the garment was left behind.
- 15:00 But when Jesus was tempted by Satan in Matthew 4:10,
- 15:04 Satan went away.
- 15:06 And so we see the difference of scope there
- 15:08 between the human and the Divine.
- 15:10 Well let's pick up our story
- 15:12 as Joseph continues his life in Egypt.
- 15:22 Despite God's blessings there was trouble brewing in the house of Potiphar.
- 15:27 Potiphar's wife had taken a peculiar liking to Joseph.
- 15:31 But so far, he had refused all of her coy invitations.
- 15:37 Perhaps, she thought to herself, this time it would be different.
- 15:42 But once again, Joseph refuses to violate Potiphar's trust.
- 15:47 He would not sin against his God.
- 15:50 Enraged by yet another rejection
- 15:53 her screams summoned a nearby guard
- 15:56 who pursues Joseph and throws him into jail
- 15:59 where he joins other prisoners from Pharaoh's court.
- 16:17 Joseph is in prison.
- 16:20 And even in prison after he was tempted but was without sin
- 16:24 just as Yeshua was tempted but was without sin,
- 16:26 I John 3:5 and Hebrews 2:18
- 16:29 we realize that there's not one word in the Torah spoken against Joseph.
- 16:35 And that's phenomenal because the Patriarchs, let's face it,
- 16:37 are family line, our family history is full of " meshugas ", full of "craziness".
- 16:41 There's difficulty, there's sin, there's ups and downs.
- 16:45 But Joseph has a pretty good report, doesn't he?
- 16:47 Well God has a plan and he's going to use Joseph as a type of Jesus.
- 16:51 And that's what we've been saying.
- 16:52 And what we want to also convey
- 16:54 is that the LORD through his grace can give us that same testimony
- 16:58 through the power of our Messiah.
- 17:00 Yeah, you know I keep harping on this but the truth is that,
- 17:02 you think about this,
- 17:04 I believe Potiphar understood that his wife was trying to entrap Joseph
- 17:09 because it really parallels what Pilate did.
- 17:12 Pilate said, I find no fault in this man; and yet he handed him over
- 17:17 because he just wanted to get rid of the problem, to save face.
- 17:20 I think Potiphar was in a similar position.
- 17:23 Well he could have killed him right at that moment.
- 17:26 But he didn't kill him.
- 17:28 Because I think there was some loyalty there.
- 17:30 He just simply put him in a prison.
- 17:32 And put him in a prison for 2 years.
- 17:34 And then these 2 men come... the baker and the butler.
- 17:38 Myles - yeah, the butler and the baker come in.
- 17:40 And think about this...
- 17:41 In the pit, in the prison, Joseph even in the prison;
- 17:45 he wins the respect of the jailer.
- 17:47 The jailer's testimony is that this is a man
- 17:52 that I can put in charge of all the other prisoners.
- 17:55 It's hard to imagine!
- 17:56 This kind of integrity, this kind of wonder
- 17:58 that this Joseph is growing in stature and favor with God and man.
- 18:03 And he wins the respect of the jailer.
- 18:05 And it reminds me again of the New Testament where the centurion at the cross says,
- 18:10 truly this was the Son of God.
- 18:13 There's something about the recognition of spiritual authority,
- 18:17 the recognition of the anointing that's on Joseph
- 18:20 and that is on, of course, Yeshua Ha Meshiach .
- 18:23 So we're seeing these parallels.
- 18:25 And the butler and the baker are put into prison.
- 18:28 And the story is going to lead us into a "hope so"
- 18:31 that they will stand for Joseph,
- 18:33 that they will bring his testimony before Pharaoh.
- 18:37 We're going to see how dreams got Joseph into this situation.
- 18:41 And dreams will get him out.
- 18:43 That's good.
- 18:45 Joseph is the dreamer.
- 18:47 He is the dreamer who dreams big dreams that are beyond his ability.
- 18:51 And God is going to give him authority over the entire known world at the time.
- 18:57 And again, a parallel with Yeshua who is the King of kings and the LORD of Lords.
- 19:03 (Speaking Hebrew)
- 19:06 He is the "Suffering Servant", "Messiah Ben Joseph"
- 19:10 who is returning as "Meshiach Ben David".
- 19:14 And the story of Jesus is those two parts of who he is
- 19:18 and one identity are both true
- 19:22 that he has come as a suffering servant to die in our place
- 19:26 and he's returning as the "Lion of the Tribe of Judah".
- 19:36 In Canaan he had been despised and rejected by his brothers.
- 19:42 He had been sold to the Ishmaelites,
- 19:45 sold again to the Egyptians,
- 19:50 and now this.
- 19:52 Would the God of his fathers show mercy?
- 19:56 Could justice be served within the stone walls of an Egyptian prison?

- 21:33 But we might have been betrayed by somebody that has been very close to us,
- 21:38 somebody that we've held dear.
- 21:40 It's harder to overcome that in a way.
- 21:44 But we can gain strength that the LORD said that he will
- 21:47 help us to overcome and to forgive those that have betrayed us.
- 21:51 And we do see that played out in the life of Joseph over and over again.
- 21:55 And it's instructional for us.
- 21:57 Right, I know I've had a close friend in my own life betray me.
- 22:01 And it's not until you see...
- 22:05 They might have meant it for evil but God's going to use it for good.
- 22:08 Because He is working his character in us.
- 22:11 He's working his love in us.
- 22:13 And it's that love that flows through us when we can forgive.
- 22:16 That's really good.
- 22:18 We are made into Yeshua 's likeness and image every time we forgive.
- 22:22 So, we're going to hear a great message from Eitan Shishkoff.
- 22:26 He is a leader in the Messianic movement in Haifa and throughout Israel and the world.
- 22:32 He is the leader of "Tents of Mercy" ministry
- 22:34 and has a very widespread touch with the Israelis.
- 22:38 So let's go to Eitan right now.
- 22:41 The life of Joseph provides us
- 22:43 with some fascinating parallels
- 22:45 with the nation of Israel.
- 22:47 I'd like to touch on some of those parallels in the time that we have together.
- 22:52 From the Torah, the Books of Moses,
- 22:55 all the way through the Prophets
- 22:57 we see that God's promise is to Israel for blessing and for multiplication.
- 23:02 We begin to see that all the way back in the Book of Genesis
- 23:06 where God promises Abraham that he will become the father of many nations
- 23:12 and that God will make him exceedingly fruitful.
- 23:16 On in to the Prophetic Books that speak about the destiny
- 23:19 of Israel as a people in the Land of Israel.
- 23:23 And that even after exile we will return
- 23:26 and God will place a blessing upon us; even eternal blessing.
- 23:31 In the life of Joseph we see this promise early in his life.
- 23:36 And interestingly we're also going to be talking about
- 23:39 the fact that that promise is delayed.
- 23:41 There's an exile, just as in the life of Israel.
- 23:44 So what I want to really focus on right now is this concept of "prophetic promise"
- 23:52 which is so clear both in the life of Joseph and in the life of Israel.
- 23:57 The Scriptures are very strong in the fact that
- 24:03 there's a parallel between Jesus-Yeshua; and Israel
- 24:09 in where Hosea says,
- 24:15 and what God is saying here is
- 24:17 both for Israel;
- 24:19 Israel will come out of Egypt as a people,
- 24:22 and Yeshua who was taken to Egypt by his parents and then brought back.
- 24:26 This is also true of Joseph.
- 24:28 Because we see in Genesis 39, it says..
- 24:34 Of course he was only taken back to the Promised Land in the form of his bones.
- 24:38 But there's a beautiful repetition and a beautiful rehearsal here
- 24:42 which really helps us to understand the purposes of God.
- 24:46 And in fact, that is what I believe the story of Joseph
- 24:49 will help us to see the history of Israel in miniature in a condensed form.
- 24:55 And I look forward to bringing the next episodes where we will
- 25:00 speak as the history of Israel unfolds reflected in the life of Joseph.
- 25:08 Well brother Eitan did such a wonderful job of creating
- 25:11 an overview of the making of a man of God,
- 25:14 how it parallels not only the restoration of the life of Israel
- 25:17 but also for us individually,
- 25:19 how we are brought into Yeshua 's likeness and image
- 25:22 by the things that we suffer, by setbacks that we have.
- 25:25 I know for us, that I've had many, many years as a counselor
- 25:29 as a licensed therapist and helping people to find that way
- 25:32 of turning their difficulty, turning their suffering
- 25:35 into something beautiful that God can use.
- 25:38 That's one of the great joys of our lives.
- 25:40 Right, and it's the Word of God that helps us through these times
- 25:42 and it says, again the Word of God tried Joseph.
- 25:46 And he was in the pit, he's in the prison
- 25:50 and we know he's going somewhere
- 25:52 just like you are in your life.
- 25:53 You might feel like you're in a pit.
- 25:55 Or you might feel imprisoned.
- 25:57 Or you might even feel like your feet are shackled.
- 25:59 But you are going somewhere.
- 26:00 God has a destiny for you, he has a plan.
- 26:03 And not only in this life but in the life to come.
- 26:06 There will be so much amazing joy as we go through those pearly gates.
- 26:11 I can't wait but I know I have a purpose here and that goes for you too.
- 26:15 So when we go through the valley
- 26:18 let us remember that God is with us.
- 26:21 It's really true.
- 26:22 Think about this, that Joseph even had someone like Potiphar
- 26:26 whose legal right it would have been to have him killed
- 26:29 just as Pilate legally could have had Yeshua killed.
- 26:33 But both of them had this doubt because of the righteousness that they saw.
- 26:36 Think about Potiphar, instead of killing Joseph, put him in prison
- 26:39 which is terrible but not as bad as death.
- 26:42 And Pilate said, I find no fault in this man.
- 26:45 Pilate had that same doubt as well.
- 26:47 There's this understanding that we're looking at something that is touched by God.
- 26:52 And both those leaders had their doubts about the punishment
- 26:58 But things played out the way they played out.
- 27:00 Thank God that Yeshua voluntarily went to the cross
- 27:03 for your sin and my sin.
- 27:04 Absolutely.
- 27:05 Especially for my sin.
- 27:06 And so we're grateful to the LORD for providing salvation for us.
