  • 00:09 On today's special Thanksgiving program,
  • 00:11 we take a moment and look back at 2020 and review what the Lord
  • 00:14 has done through this ministry.
  • 00:18 David: We're so glad you've joined us today, I'm David Hart.
  • 00:20 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
  • 00:21 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: And I am Jeffrey Seif.
  • 00:24 And we are looking at Thanksgiving.
  • 00:28 Do you know what that word is in the Greek?
  • 00:31 "Eucharistia," it's where you get the word "eucharist" from.
  • 00:34 That's when we thank God for God.
  • 00:36 Here we thank God for God and we thank you for you,
  • 00:38 and it's great to be here with you, yes?
  • 00:40 Kirsten: You amaze me every time, right?
  • 00:42 The knowledge just seems out.
  • 00:44 David: Well, what I take from this is I'm thankful we're at
  • 00:47 this desk during this crazy year that we've been through.
  • 00:50 We're still able to do what we do.
  • 00:51 Jeffrey: Yes, you know, through thick and thin,
  • 00:54 that you know, the Word of God carries on
  • 00:55 and our friends help us.
  • 00:56 And it's great to be at the other end of 2020.
  • 00:59 I'm looking over the horizon.
  • 01:01 Kirsten: I'm hoping for great things.
  • 01:03 I mean, we had a grandbaby born this year, so--
  • 01:06 Jeffrey: Me too.
  • 01:08 Kirsten: Right, right, and she's adorable.
  • 01:10 So there's--you know, we always have to look at the good things,
  • 01:13 and that's why we have thanksgiving.
  • 01:15 Take a time just to kinda deep breath and
  • 01:18 look at what God's done for us.
  • 01:19 Jeffrey: You know, most people spend too
  • 01:21 much time looking behind.
  • 01:22 If you drive a car, you need all your
  • 01:23 eyes focused on what's ahead of you.
  • 01:25 You can't be looking back to see where you just passed.
  • 01:27 And we're gonna look and see where we've gone and where we're
  • 01:30 going, but life needs to be lived in the future.
  • 01:33 David: That's right, we actually began 2020 with the series,
  • 01:36 "Joshua: More Than a Conqueror."
  • 01:38 Let's see some excerpts right now.
  • 01:42 ♪♪♪

  • 02:09 ♪♪♪
  • 02:21 Joshua: What happened at Mount Sinai was a miracle,
  • 02:24 a personal message to Moses inscribed in stone by
  • 02:28 the very finger of Adonai.
  • 02:31 Days later, it's left me wondering, still searching
  • 02:34 for words to explain our journey on the mount.
  • 02:44 Why did he choose me?
  • 02:47 He could have chosen any the elders.
  • 02:49 Gershom, Eliezer.
  • 02:56 There was this thick cloud that covered us.
  • 02:59 For six days, nothing could be seen.
  • 03:05 And all the more I wondered why he'd chosen me.
  • 03:09 Jeffrey: Though Moses gets all the attention initially, and
  • 03:12 rightly so as the principal leader, he had an assistant.
  • 03:18 His name was Joshua.
  • 03:20 Interesting fellow to be sure.
  • 03:23 His name was Hosea originally, but his name was changed from a
  • 03:27 word for salvation to Jehoshua.
  • 03:30 That is, God is salvation.
  • 03:33 And he was going to learn that.
  • 03:36 Interesting word in Hebrew.
  • 03:38 In Greek, salvation, "sozo," means saved.
  • 03:43 It means healed, be made whole, put back together again.
  • 03:47 The word "yeshua" or "Joshua" in Hebrew,
  • 03:51 it means to heal.
  • 03:54 It means to deliver.
  • 03:56 It means to redeem, to save.
  • 03:59 And Joshua was all that, and in so doing, he led Israel.
  • 04:05 And he indeed was more than just a conqueror,
  • 04:09 though he was that to be sure.
  • 04:12 Jeffrey: It's been a miraculous journey.
  • 04:14 The Jordan River has dried up to facilitate its crossing,
  • 04:19 the mighty walls of Jericho have fallen down and now,
  • 04:22 with heaven-sent cunning, Joshua leads his men to yet another
  • 04:27 victory at the city of Ai.
  • 04:31 Jeffrey: Ai went up in flames, finally.
  • 04:35 Israel got burned beforehand, however, and in another sense,
  • 04:39 and I'm gonna tell that story here today.
  • 04:42 It's a tragic story actually.
  • 04:45 Victory's one thing, defeat's another.
  • 04:47 In the Bible we get a little bit of both.
  • 04:50 Actually, in the Scripture, if you look at the miraculous
  • 04:54 victories so far, the parting of the sea,
  • 04:57 the Jordan, the Israelites crossing through,
  • 05:00 yes, that's 17 verses for that.
  • 05:03 If you look at the miracle in the war at Jericho,
  • 05:07 a sum total of 27 verses for that.
  • 05:11 The battle of Ai, a small city, it shouldn't have taken much.
  • 05:17 It was a tragedy, 81 verses, by my reckoning,
  • 05:22 for that in the Hebrew Bible.
  • 05:25 Jeffrey: You know, men, we want the best in life.
  • 05:27 We feel we don't always get it.
  • 05:28 We think we--we go for an ideal.
  • 05:30 We think we got a raw deal.
  • 05:32 Get that faith at work, and seek the Lord for what he would have
  • 05:36 you to do, and find the divine strategy he has for you to help
  • 05:40 you to be the head and not the tail,
  • 05:42 to be a conqueror and not conquered,
  • 05:45 to be a victor and not a victim, and you yourself can experience
  • 05:49 with God how, like Joshua, you can be more than a conqueror.
  • 05:53 ♪♪♪
  • 06:00 Kirsten: That was an excerpt from our series,

  • 07:00 "In the Footsteps of the Rabbi from Tarsus."
  • 07:03 That's a big title, but you went all across
  • 07:06 the Mediterranean, didn't you?
  • 07:08 David: Rome. You were in Rome.
  • 07:09 Kirsten: You were literally in the
  • 07:11 Mediterranean Sea, weren't you?
  • 07:12 Jeffrey: And you guys sent me there, thank you.
  • 07:15 You know, I know people wanna travel to Bible lands.
  • 07:18 We take a camera and take you to it, thanks.
  • 07:20 Kirsten: It was a beautiful series, but
  • 07:21 you also taught us so much.
  • 07:23 And we're gonna take you right now to
  • 07:24 some excerpts from that series.
  • 07:29 ♪♪♪
  • 07:39 ♪♪♪
  • 07:49 ♪♪♪
  • 07:59 ♪♪♪
  • 08:09 ♪♪♪
  • 08:19 ♪♪♪
  • 08:26 Jeffrey: Something strange happened to him
  • 08:28 on that road to Damascus.
  • 08:31 Many years ago, the rabbi from Tarsus traversed the path,
  • 08:36 and there he was knocked off his horse, floored.
  • 08:39 He was as good as blind, so much so that he had to get led into
  • 08:44 Damascus by the hand.
  • 08:46 And there, one of the brethren laid hands on him
  • 08:50 and Paul began to see.
  • 08:53 Oh, but this man didn't just see things materially.
  • 08:56 He was given a kind of spiritual vision as well.
  • 09:00 And what he envisioned would change the world.
  • 09:04 ♪♪♪
  • 09:09 Jeffrey: Seems that in Jerusalem proper, in proximity
  • 09:12 to the temple, there were porches round about,
  • 09:15 in one of which we're told that the believers met.
  • 09:17 It was a place called Solomon's Portico, and there they
  • 09:20 would teach and discuss the issues of the day.
  • 09:23 And there was a whole lot of discussion
  • 09:25 going on about a lot of things.
  • 09:26 Principle among them was the question: What on God's Earth is
  • 09:31 the rabbi from Tarsus doing?
  • 09:35 Word had spread of his ministry to individuals of non-Jewish
  • 09:39 extract, and people were disconcerted.
  • 09:43 Prior to this time, those who followed
  • 09:45 Jesus were Jewish people.
  • 09:47 They were women and men of Jewish extract who lived
  • 09:49 and functioned as Jews.
  • 09:51 They were Jewish people who were for Jesus, but what now?
  • 09:55 Women and men of non-Jewish extract were coming in,
  • 09:59 but the question is, what do we do with them?
  • 10:08 Jeffrey: Paul came to Rome as a courtesy of the state.
  • 10:10 He had appealed to Caesar, and to Caesar he came here in Rome.
  • 10:15 You'll see some sites behind me.
  • 10:17 One is an Arch of Constantine, came a bit later.
  • 10:20 The Forum is in close proximity, as is the great Coliseum behind,
  • 10:25 which came a little later as well.
  • 10:26 But this is Rome.
  • 10:28 And when Paul was here initially, he came here.
  • 10:30 As I've said, he was transported courtesy of Rome by a centurion.
  • 10:34 He was under house arrest.
  • 10:35 And it's from here where he wrote a few epistles.
  • 10:39 He wrote to the Ephesians.
  • 10:41 He wrote to the Colossians.
  • 10:43 He wrote a personal letter to Philemon.
  • 10:45 And then he wrote a document called The Philippians,
  • 10:49 which is arguably the friendliest of Paul's letters.
  • 10:53 That's not to say he was a mean sort, but it
  • 10:56 seems that when he wrote the others, he was
  • 10:58 disconcerted about one thing or another, but the
  • 11:01 Philippian correspondence was a thank you letter.
  • 11:05 Jeffrey: It seems to me that the church has gone--has its
  • 11:07 various traditions, but we do well to open
  • 11:10 up the primary literature.
  • 11:12 And therein, when we read Paul's writings,
  • 11:15 we can sense his heart.
  • 11:17 Better it is, it seems to me, that we get in touch with what
  • 11:20 he had to say over and against what the traditions
  • 11:23 of the day might be.
  • 11:24 And so for that reason, I advocate that we do well to walk
  • 11:29 in the footsteps of the rabbi from Tarsus, to read his
  • 11:33 word, and to follow his example, because that is
  • 11:36 truly where we learn what it means to be Christian.
  • 11:42 ♪♪♪
  • 11:52 ♪♪♪
  • 11:58 Kirsten: The scenery throughout that whole series was
  • 11:59 breathtaking, but what else was breathtaking was your teaching.
  • 12:04 It was so on point. Thank you.
  • 12:06 Jeffrey: Well, you're kind; I think it people stay
  • 12:08 with the biblical word, there's lots of good stuff.
  • 12:10 There's not enough biblical teaching at the end
  • 12:14 of the day, the way I perceive it.
  • 12:15 Speaking of which, here's a great Thanksgiving verse.
  • 12:19 He says in Philippians chapter 4, "My God will fulfill every
  • 12:24 need of yours according to the riches of his glory."
  • 12:29 God's got riches, he's got glory,
  • 12:32 and he's got a heart to supply needs.
  • 12:34 Isn't that a good word?
  • 12:35 Kirsten: It is a good word and we need to hear that because
  • 12:37 it's been a tough year, we haven't taken
  • 12:39 any tours to Israel.
  • 12:41 David: Right. It's also Thanksgiving season.
  • 12:44 So much to be thankful for even in the midst of
  • 12:47 what we've all been going through.
  • 12:48 Kirsten: Right, crazy year.
  • 12:50 But some good.
  • 12:51 And I just wanna let all of you know, if you wanna take a
  • 12:55 tour to the holy land, it will change your life.
  • 12:58 2020, yes, has been crazy, but I don't think any tours have gone.
  • 13:02 If we can go, if this ministry can get into
  • 13:06 Israel, we are going.
  • 13:07 We go two times a year, hopefully in the
  • 13:10 spring and also in the fall.
  • 13:11 We'd love to have you go with us.
  • 13:12 David: I'll say that many places that you've taught, we go.
  • 13:16 And we would love for you to join us on a tour.

  • 13:25 the kings of old in the Old Testament.
  • 13:28 Jeffrey: Yes, well, you know, the political climate is so
  • 13:32 interesting in our culture, and it was really
  • 13:35 interesting back in the day.
  • 13:38 And our friends, you, donated to help us to get the story out.
  • 13:43 We looked at political intrigue, social unrest,
  • 13:47 bad kings and kingdoms, and good ones,
  • 13:49 as we journeyed through the biblical narrative.
  • 13:51 David: It's a great series.
  • 13:52 Let's take a look at some excerpts from "Kings
  • 13:54 and Kingdoms" right now.
  • 13:58 ♪♪♪
  • 14:08 ♪♪♪
  • 14:18 ♪♪♪
  • 14:28 ♪♪♪
  • 14:38 ♪♪♪
  • 14:45 Jeffrey: I'm interested in the book of Kings.
  • 14:49 Actually, in the old Hebrew Bible, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Kings.
  • 14:54 From Saul at the beginning all the way to the ending kings with
  • 15:01 the fall of the northern and southern kingdom, and
  • 15:03 we're gonna explore that in this series, "Kings and Kingdoms."
  • 15:10 Jeffrey: It's not that the biblical author gave him a pass,
  • 15:14 but he definitely passed through note of his indiscretions,
  • 15:19 which were egregious, in order to give him credit.
  • 15:25 What am I talking about?
  • 15:27 I don't wanna play my hand just yet, but I wanna say that
  • 15:31 the story had to do with where we are right now.
  • 15:36 Adjacent to me is Jericho.
  • 15:38 We're right there at the lowest part of the earth.
  • 15:41 Jordan is not far away.
  • 15:42 Saudi Arabia is south.
  • 15:45 You go up the Judean foothills which are adjacent to me,
  • 15:49 you get to Jerusalem.
  • 15:51 This is border land, and it was a significant border.
  • 15:57 When Israel broke away from Judah,
  • 16:01 they established this as a border outpost.
  • 16:06 It was significant.
  • 16:07 You had to control this in order to control
  • 16:11 the gateway to Jerusalem.
  • 16:12 It was very important.
  • 16:14 You know, America has thousands of miles of border with ocean,
  • 16:17 with the Atlantic and Pacific.
  • 16:19 We're not worried about getting attacked by whales.
  • 16:21 Canada hasn't been a problem, and really, until recently,
  • 16:25 Central and South America hasn't been an issue.
  • 16:28 Now, an invasion is less to do about wars as it is
  • 16:31 to do with desperate people.
  • 16:33 And that raises the issue in my generation and in this
  • 16:37 particular moment about what to do about borders.
  • 16:40 When I look at kings and kingdoms, while I'm looking
  • 16:44 at that generally, specifically what I'm looking at are
  • 16:47 issues associated with faithfulness to biblical vision.
  • 16:53 And I say that to you as you're looking for what leads,
  • 16:57 who leads, what ideas move forward,
  • 17:01 what personalities best advocate for those ideas.
  • 17:05 As you, in a democracy, weigh in and decide what you wanna do,
  • 17:09 who you wanna support, whether it's in government,
  • 17:13 in the broader sense of political government,
  • 17:15 who do you wanna attach yourself to in business,
  • 17:18 in the business of business, or even who you wanna attach
  • 17:21 yourself to in the business of love,
  • 17:24 whether it's building a biological kingdom,
  • 17:26 whether it's building a business kingdom,
  • 17:28 whether it's considering the national kingdom that we live
  • 17:32 in, our country, let me encourage you with what the
  • 17:35 biblical authors encourage us.
  • 17:38 Put your energies and support behind that which advocates
  • 17:44 faithfulness to the biblical economy.
  • 17:48 Support faithful men.
  • 17:50 Support policies that reflect biblical vision.
  • 17:54 This, according to the authors of this,
  • 17:57 the Bible, this is a recipe for success in life.
  • 18:01 Jeffrey: And it certainly is true in the Jewish world in
  • 18:04 America where many people are Jewish in a cultural sense,
  • 18:07 but not necessarily in a religious sense when it comes to
  • 18:10 commitment to biblical text.
  • 18:12 One can live out a cultural kind of religion where God is at a
  • 18:16 distance and religion's at a distance.
  • 18:19 This is not only a problem in modernity,
  • 18:21 it was a problem in antiquity, in Bible days, in fact, and--
  • 18:24 Jeffrey: You've heard about fake news.
  • 18:26 Well, I want to talk to you about fake Jews.
  • 18:33 Sounds like I'm being cute, but the story is not so funny.
  • 18:37 This Jeroboam, over 20 times in the Hebrew Bible,
  • 18:41 because of all of this, he's referred to as the man
  • 18:45 who made Israel to sin.
  • 18:49 It starts off as a political issue,
  • 18:52 and then it translates into a spiritual one as well.
  • 18:57 It reminds me, by the way, in so many ways of the
  • 18:59 world that we live in.
  • 19:01 Let's learn a lesson and follow the God of Israel.
  • 19:04 Never mind fake Jews, fake politics, fake religion.
  • 19:07 Let's go after the real deal.

  • 19:39 David: Such an encouraging word from
  • 19:40 King David about giving thanks, I love that.
  • 19:44 Kirsten: Yeah, and we give thanks for all of you.
  • 19:46 You have kept us on the air.
  • 19:48 This program started in 1979 just on TV,
  • 19:52 and now we've expanded.
  • 19:54 We're on this wonderful thing called the Internet.
  • 19:56 I mean, in '79 we couldn't even imagine that
  • 19:59 we'd have something like that.
  • 20:00 We have wonderful social media outlets.
  • 20:02 There's all kinds of extra information on there.
  • 20:05 Find us and we're, again, thankful for you making
  • 20:07 all of this possible.
  • 20:08 Jeffrey: Yes, and folk are keeping us on the air,
  • 20:11 but really you're wanting to keep on the air good news
  • 20:14 through the eyes of the Jews and times news.
  • 20:16 And against that backdrop, great series on Revelation.
  • 20:20 Thank you for helping us tell the story.
  • 20:22 It's a good time to open up the book.
  • 20:23 What do you think? Let's check it out now.

  • 20:44 Jeffrey: The book of Revelation has been a go-to
  • 20:46 source for a long, long time.
  • 20:49 Individuals trying to look at what's happening in the news on
  • 20:52 the one hand and to look at what's happening in the good
  • 20:55 news on the other to see if there's a correlation.
  • 20:58 Well, here we wanna peak behind the veil and look at the visions
  • 21:02 noted in the apocalypse.
  • 21:06 Jeffrey: John isn't in the best of the places himself.
  • 21:08 Our author is banished to an island out here in the
  • 21:11 Aegean Sea called Patmos.
  • 21:13 And from this island now, he sees things to come.
  • 21:17 He gives voice to these dispatches going global in his
  • 21:20 day throughout the empire.
  • 21:22 He sees in chapter 6 visions, the first of which is a horse,
  • 21:27 and the rider has a crown given to him.
  • 21:31 And he goes forth in verse 2 as a conqueror so he might conquer.
  • 21:37 He sees another horse, in verse 4, "Fiery red.
  • 21:40 The one riding on it was permitted to take peace from the
  • 21:45 earth, so that people would slaughter one another.
  • 21:50 And he was given a sword."
  • 21:53 Our journey continues in the 13th chapter.
  • 21:55 The author sees these beasts coming out of the sea.
  • 21:59 He sees just more demon-inspired misery.
  • 22:06 He sees demonic forces in verse 7 invested against the kedoshim,
  • 22:11 against the saints, and they overcome them.
  • 22:14 We're seeing that this diabolical leader,
  • 22:17 this beast--by the way, in the Johannine literature,
  • 22:21 in John's, you know, letters, he's the antichrist.
  • 22:23 Here he's the beast.
  • 22:25 There's different languages for the devil when the devil has his
  • 22:29 day, but here a beast.
  • 22:31 He comes and we're told "He was given authority," temporarily
  • 22:36 "over every tribe, people, tongue, and nation.
  • 22:38 And all who dwell on the earth worship him--everyone whose name
  • 22:43 is not written from the foundation in the world in the
  • 22:46 Book of Life and of the Lamb."
  • 22:48 Revelation chapter 11 opens up with a picture out of Ezekiel
  • 22:53 who, toward the end of his book, is beckoned to go
  • 22:56 and measure the temple.
  • 22:57 I mention that here because in chapter 11,
  • 22:59 verse 1, you have the command to do much the same.
  • 23:03 There are those in the temple worshipping,
  • 23:06 outside the courtyards are trampled,
  • 23:08 and then we're told that there are these two witnesses who are
  • 23:12 given voice to prophesy in these very difficult days.
  • 23:17 And hell comes against them, but they keep speaking.
  • 23:20 We're told one of these two has power to shut up the heavens so
  • 23:25 there'll be no rain and the other has power over waters to
  • 23:28 turn them into blood, et cetera.
  • 23:30 This reminds me of the days of Elijah and the days of Moses and
  • 23:34 some think these witnesses are akin to those personalities.
  • 23:37 One prays and shuts up the heavens,
  • 23:39 the other prays and the waters turn to blood.
  • 23:42 "I looked, and behold, a vast multitude no one could
  • 23:45 count--from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues."
  • 23:52 It's not just Jews.
  • 23:54 These are people, "Standing before the
  • 23:56 throne and before the Lamb."
  • 23:59 So this author in century 1, writing from here,
  • 24:03 banished as he was.
  • 24:05 All the earlier apostles were killed.
  • 24:07 He's banished, and he has a vision of a
  • 24:11 world that goes upside-down.
  • 24:12 He sees Jews that walk with the Lord and died with the Lord.
  • 24:17 He sees non-Jews.
  • 24:21 For him, the church is made up of one new man,
  • 24:24 Jews and non-Jews alike.
  • 24:26 We're seeing that today, by the way.
  • 24:28 Similarly, we're seeing Jewish witnesses to Yeshua,
  • 24:32 non-Jewish witnesses.
  • 24:33 It really is fascinating.
  • 24:35 It was like that in century 1.
  • 24:37 It's like that today.
  • 24:39 And here, it's prophesied in the Good Book.
  • 24:41 And these together, we're told, "Are standing before the Lamb."
  • 24:45 You know, language for Yeshua, the crucified one.
  • 24:49 And they're singing in verse 10, "Salvation belongs to our God,
  • 24:53 who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!"
  • 24:56 It's not just my God. It's not the Jewish God.
  • 24:58 The God of all.
  • 25:01 I love it.
  • 25:02 This author sees an arising.
  • 25:06 He sees a rebellion.
  • 25:08 He sees that the wicked empire is going to be thrown off at
  • 25:12 day's end; that the slain, that the crucified one, will prevail.
  • 25:18 And those with him, similarly, though it might seem they
  • 25:21 prevail not just now, nevertheless,
  • 25:25 victory is theirs at the ragged edge of time.
  • 25:29 ♪♪♪
  • 25:35 Kirsten: I've gotta be honest with all of you.
  • 25:37 When COVID started, I had no idea if,
  • 25:41 Jeff, churches would make it, if funds would still be coming in,
  • 25:45 if people would still be giving offerings,
  • 25:47 if this ministry would make it, and we have,
  • 25:51 by the grace of God.
  • 25:52 We've continued on. It's amazing.
  • 25:54 Jeffrey: But I think every generation has things that are
  • 25:57 unanticipated, but we got through it,
  • 26:00 and thank you for you.
  • 26:01 I thank God for you for helping us.
  • 26:03 You know, sometimes amidst the turbulence of
  • 26:06 trying times, people hold back.
  • 26:08 But thank you for still reaching in and helping
  • 26:10 us to tell this story.
  • 26:12 The good news needs to get out, especially now when there's so
  • 26:15 much bad news in people's heads, you know?
  • 26:17 And you kept us going, and thank you for that,
  • 26:20 and I wanna thank you in advance for the future.
  • 26:22 David: That's right, we began the program
  • 26:23 with Greek "thanksgiving."
  • 26:26 You said "thanksgiving" in Greek.
