- 00:03 We want the message of Christianity through Jewish eyes
- 00:07 and the relevance of the State of Israel;
- 00:09 we want it to go to the next generation.
- 00:11 It's a passion for us.
- 00:13 We have children in college.
- 00:14 One just graduated.
- 00:15 It's so exciting for us to see kids understanding the importance of Israel,
- 00:19 the importance of their Jewish heritage.
- 00:49 For Zion's sake I will not hold my peace
- 00:53 and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest
- 00:57 until her righteousness goes forth as brightness
- 01:01 and her salvation as a lamp that burns.
- 01:15 Shalom, and welcome to our program.
- 01:16 I'm Myles Weiss.
- 01:17 And I'm Katharine Weiss.
- 01:18 And welcome to our series "Zion Forever"
- 01:21 We're taking you to the City of David and the Temple Mount.
- 01:23 Two very important places.
- 01:25 They are contested.
- 01:27 You know, here in the real estate business location, location, location?
- 01:30 Well, this is the epicenter.
- 01:32 The Holy of Holies of Holies.
- 01:34 This is the epicenter of all the conflict that is pointing towards Jerusalem
- 01:37 because the Temple Mount is where the Temple stood.
- 01:40 It is " HaMakom " - "The Place"
- 01:42 where the Western Wall is,
- 01:43 the closest we can get to that.
- 01:45 And the City of David establishes the historical truth of King David.
- 01:49 Absolutely, it's amazing to go see what God is unearthing in these days.
- 01:53 You know, it say in Psalms 48:13
- 02:08 That's so important to us.
- 02:10 We have grown men now.
- 02:12 But they're 24 and 21 when we're shooting this.
- 02:14 And their generation needs to know the importance
- 02:18 of the realities of what's going on in Israel and the Middle East.
- 02:21 And so these programs are a part of that.
- 02:23 It's really a fulfillment of what God calls us to
- 02:26 way back in Deuteronomy.
- 02:27 " L'dor v'dor " "From generation to generation"
- 02:31 I think that's why Yeshua's speaking in Luke 19:40,
- 02:35 He says...
- 02:38 We know that has a spiritual meaning
- 02:40 but the reality is that also right now the very stones of Israel
- 02:44 are crying out speaking the truth about this Book and about God.
- 02:48 And so, we're excited to take you now to Shahar Shilo.
- 02:52 He's a historian and one of the guides at the City of David.
- 02:55 Let's hear from him now.
- 02:59 Shahar, Thank you for being with us.
- 03:00 We're standing here
- 03:01 between the Temple Mount and the City of David
- 03:03 on the City of David.
- 03:04 Tell us some of the newest findings
- 03:06 that you have been part of
- 03:07 that you know about here regarding the Temple Mount.
- 03:09 Well down at the Temple Mount,
- 03:11 the place which the Bible calls the " Ophel ".
- 03:13 " Ophel " comes from "the steep way up"
- 03:16 which is exactly the steep way up
- 03:18 from the Kidron Valley to the Temple Mount itself.
- 03:20 Dr. Eliat Mazar has been excavating
- 03:21 right behind my back right now.
- 03:23 She's on the slopes of the Southern Steps
- 03:25 where Jesus entered the Temple.
- 03:26 And she knows the site so well
- 03:28 because what she dug down there
- 03:29 is a Solomonic wall from the walls of King Solomon.
- 03:32 We need to remember that King David established his city on this hill
- 03:34 which is south of us right now.
- 03:36 At my back comes the enlargement of the city
- 03:39 only at the times of Solomon.
- 03:41 So we're looking for Solomon's things,
- 03:42 anything which has to do with the Solomon of the times
- 03:44 should be behind my back right now.
- 03:46 We need to remember that she can only dig as far as the walls themselves
- 03:49 because this is a sanctuary of the Muslim world today.
- 03:52 No one can dig under the Temple Mount itself.
- 03:55 So regardless of politics
- 03:57 there have been some amazing finds recently.
- 03:59 I read about a medallion and some other gold coins.
- 04:03 Tell us about those.
- 04:04 Well she found some really amazing stuff.
- 04:07 And regardless of the politics
- 04:08 which are inside the Temple Mount on the slopes.
- 04:10 Findings are coming all the time.
- 04:12 Like this huge golden medallion which shows the Jewish menorah
- 04:16 and the Jewish shofar, the great horn,
- 04:18 and things which has to do with the time of the Byzantine world.
- 04:22 Which, by the way, Jews have always tried to get to Jerusalem.
- 04:26 This one comes from the 6th century AD.
- 04:28 And it shows that the Jews never stopped to dream of Jerusalem.
- 04:32 And when they had the ability of coming to Jerusalem with the national symbols, they did.
- 04:36 And so she found golden coins,
- 04:38 and she found huge amounts of lanterns and pottery
- 04:40 that dates back from the times of the 10th century BCE,
- 04:44 again, behind my back,
- 04:45 all the time to the Byzantine world
- 04:47 when Jews were still prevented from coming to Jerusalem.
- 04:50 And yet, they did as much as they could.
- 04:52 So our viewers begin with the understanding that Scripture is inerrant.
- 04:56 They believe the Bible.
- 04:58 And I like to say that the headlines are catching up to the Bible.
- 05:00 Your seeing an interface... phenomenal!
- 05:03 I have to say,
- 05:04 I have to be frank here
- 05:05 as a scholar but as a secular person.
- 05:08 Yes
- 05:09 I very much believe in the Bible.
- 05:10 I have no doubts about the existence of the story of the Bible.
- 05:13 No doubts whatsoever.
- 05:14 Because whenever I see historical documents
- 05:17 Verified
- 05:18 proving things outside the Bible,
- 05:20 The Biblical story is being supported by two different academic lines.
- 05:23 One of them is history, which is documents.
- 05:25 And the other one is archaeology
- 05:26 which stands for its own but that it needs interpreted.
- 05:28 And we interpret it whatever we find.
- 05:31 So if it goes along with documents
- 05:32 then we say, "bingo", no doubts whatsoever.
- 05:35 So if you have the book of Jeremiah being proved here with many, many chapters,
- 05:38 if you've got things coming from out from the time of Abraham, the time of the patriarchs,
- 05:42 we are talking about a great astonishing to the world today.
- 05:45 And as we move forward I expect many of the other stories to be proved as well.
- 05:49 It's quite easy as things are
- 05:51 popping out of the ground in the City of David.
- 05:54 We were here several years ago
- 05:55 and one of our passengers on the tour found a Maccabean coin at the sifting project.
- 06:01 Tell us about the sifting project.
- 06:02 Our viewers would love to hear about it.
- 06:04 Well, the sifting project I should say is a privilege.
- 06:07 Because for many, many years the Temple Mount itself as a sanctuary,
- 06:10 was for forbidden to dig underneath.
- 06:12 So, no one could actually excavate it.
- 06:15 Because of a different reason that took place for a whole different idea
- 06:20 the Muslims on the Temple Mount
- 06:22 wanted to do an enlarging of one of the Mosques
- 06:24 for the summertime, for Ramadan especially.
- 06:27 So they had to dig underneath us.
- 06:28 It's right there, a place which is called "Solomon's Stables" today.
- 06:31 For a mistake in history, the item doesn't exist as the Solomon's stables.
- 06:35 It was built by King Herod.
- 06:37 The whole structure behind myself right now is a Herodian, huge thing.
- 06:42 But it was under the great arches they dug in order to take out the soil
- 06:46 so they could actually put it and establish a new Mosque underground.
- 06:50 I'm talking about a few thousand of tons of soil and rubble
- 06:54 that came out from there.
- 06:56 They were thrown in the Kidron Valley
- 06:58 which from there we have taken it into a sifting project
- 07:00 that exists right now for about almost 10 years.
- 07:03 And the great amount of findings,
- 07:05 over 50,000 findings from the history of the Temple Mount keeps on appearing.
- 07:09 We have stuff there which is Egyptian, 14th century BCE
- 07:14 that goes along with the letters being sent
- 07:16 from Jerusalem to Egypt in the 14th century BCE
- 07:20 that is even prior to Joshua.
- 07:22 We have stuff coming out as a high priest impression
- 07:25 under the name "Immer"
- 07:26 appears in I Chronicles Chapter 24.
- 07:30 We have Biblical names coming off of the Temple Mount.
- 07:33 We have huge amounts of coins
- 07:34 from the time that coins exist in the world.
- 07:36 So it keeps on showing us the existence of ancient knowledge
- 07:40 from the times of the history of the Temple Mount.
- 07:43 But again it was just because of a reason that was not there in the first time
- 07:46 because we are not allowed to excavate.
- 07:49 It was just because of a mistake took place for building reasons.
- 07:54 (Myles speaking) As you can see, these efforts are vital
- 07:56 in establishing the true history of the Land.
- 07:59 We also met with Zachi Dvira
- 08:01 at the Temple Mount Sifting Project
- 08:03 where he updated us on the recovery of precious artifacts.
- 08:10 The project was established on November 2004
- 08:14 and I think we have another 7 years to finish all this debris.
- 08:20 It's a lot of work.
- 08:21 And I understand there's still more that we're not allowed to look at yet.
- 08:25 Is that true?
- 08:26 There is still more debris on the Temple Mount
- 08:28 that hasn't been removed yet because of a court ruling
- 08:33 that prevents them from just discarding this debris
- 08:38 without any controlled archaeological supervision
- 08:42 and treatment of this dirt.
- 08:45 So there afraid it would be contaminated.
- 08:47 But it's actually a political issue isn't it?
- 08:49 Of course, it's a political issue.
- 08:51 Everything in Jerusalem is political.
- 08:54 And of course, it deals with the Temple Mount
- 08:58 and for this reason there never has been an excavation;
- 09:08 a systematic excavation on the Temple Mount
- 09:10 because of the political sensitivity
- 09:12 Yes
- 09:13 and the objection of the Islamic authorities over there that don't want
- 09:18 any kind of archaeological research at the site.
- 09:22 Tell us about some of the most exciting things you found here.
- 09:25 Well, everything is exciting
- 09:28 because this is the first time that we have archaeological finds
- 09:32 that come from within the Temple Mount
- 09:35 We have such a large variety of finds from all periods
- 09:39 since the first Temple period, which is about 50% of the finds
- 09:45 and second Temple period which is about 40% of the finds, till today.

- 13:18 We have broken or smashed small, clay figurines,

- 13:29 that attests the activity of King Joash,
- 13:36 who is said that he smashed all the molten images.
- 13:41 And we have many of them.
- 13:43 And also we have arrowheads from the destruction
- 13:47 and we have lots of burnt material and burnt architectural stones
- 13:50 and we have very high level engravings from the time of Herod
- 13:59 that some of the stones may have been from the Temple itself.
- 14:02 We cannot tell because here is smashed it's out of context.
- 14:05 But you can tell the date.
- 14:07 You can tell that it came from public buildings, very elaborate buildings.
- 14:13 We have a very rare coin, a half shekel coin from silver.
- 14:18 Only 3 of them were found in Jerusalem.
- 14:20 And the half shekel; this coin was minted during the Jewish revolt against the Romans.
- 14:25 And it was used to raise funds for the Temple.

- 15:29 How many tourists, visitors, pilgrims come?
- 15:32 More than 150,000 people.
- 15:35 Have helped you here?
- 15:37 There is no such phenomenon in the archaeological research since it began 150 years ago.
- 15:45 But so many people took part in the archaeological research.
- 15:49 Even in the study of the finds we are using many experts
- 15:57 because this is the characteristics of this find that are out of context
- 16:03 so you need more expertise to date them and to recognize them.
- 16:06 So many people are taking part in this duty.
- 16:10 And you know the book of Psalms has a verse
- 16:14 that says exactly a little there...

- 17:45 Yes, and they should!
- 17:47 They should be excited.
- 17:48 It's pretty amazing.
- 17:50 So our viewers are very interested in the excitement the children feel.
- 17:53 Does it connect them with their Zion's history and their roots?
- 17:56 Of course, because they touch in the heart of the Jewish nation.
- 18:02 It's things from Bet Mikdash ,
- 18:06 the first Bet Mikdash.
- 18:08 And they see things
- 18:10 and they touch with the hand.
- 18:11 They can't go up there so they touch it.
- 18:14 So it's important on very many levels,
- 18:17 educationally,
- 18:19 but also I think it stirs up their
- 18:21 understanding of natural history
- 18:23 and the importance of being a Jew in the Land.
- 18:25 Yes, of course, because all the time we speak about it in the class.
- 18:28 And now they touch, they see, they feel it.
- 18:31 So this is real that we are here
- 18:34 and it's very, very important for them
- 18:36 and for us.
- 18:38 And all the time we only speak it,

- 19:52 I'd like to talk to you today
- 19:54 about a very popular figure in Scripture,
- 19:56 a man named " Kapha "
- 19:58 You probably know him better as "Peter"
- 20:00 Peter was located;
- 20:03 it was in the middle of the day around lunchtime,
- 20:05 on roof down the coast from here
- 20:09 at a place called Joppa in those days;
- 20:11 " Yapho " in modern Israel.
- 20:14 And Peter was kind of drowsy.
- 20:17 And during this time when he was waiting for lunch
- 20:21 Suddenly he went into a trance,
- 20:24 he had a vision, not once, but 3 times.
- 20:27 He saw a sheet lowered down from heaven
- 20:30 and in the sheet were animals.
- 20:32 It's interesting that he was hungry at the time,
- 20:34 but the animals were not kosher,
- 20:36 they were not what he was really permitted to eat
- 20:40 according to the Torah that he followed.
- 20:43 And he was wondering what this vision meant
- 20:46 when some people arrived at the gate of the house where he was staying.
- 20:51 And interestingly, the people who had come as messengers
- 20:54 were sent by a Roman centurion,
- 20:57 an officer, not Jewish, a guy named Cornelius.
- 21:00 Cornelius had also received a supernatural communication from God
- 21:05 that he was to send these men to bring Peter to Caesarea
- 21:09 which is up the coast from Joppa,
- 21:12 actually between where we are now,
- 21:13 the Haifa Bay and Jaffa or Yafo, in Caesarea.
- 21:18 And he was going to receive Peter and hear what he had to say.
- 21:23 So here's Peter, he comes down from the roof,
- 21:25 he meets these messengers,
- 21:27 the messengers say, Hey, our boss wants you to come up to Caesarea and talk to him.
- 21:34 Peter goes, okay; next day he heads to Caesarea.
- 21:37 He finds himself in the house of the Gentile Cornelius.
- 21:41 And they're ready to hear whatever he has to say.
- 21:44 Cornelius has gathered his friends, his neighbors, his relatives;
- 21:47 and Peter gives them the good news about Yeshua
- 21:51 having been sacrificed as the perfect Lamb,
- 21:55 the Son of God, the Messiah of Israel,
- 21:58 and rising from the dead.
- 21:59 Well the Spirit of God descends upon them;
- 22:02 and this is the first recorded time
- 22:04 that non-Jews have received the good news, the Gospel of Yeshua
- 22:08 and believed and received it
- 22:10 and they were filled with the Spirit of God.
- 22:12 To me, the waters both at Joppa and Caesarea and even behind us
- 22:17 represent the distribution of goods and of information,

- 22:23 and certainly in those days even more than now.
- 22:26 And so I see in this story about Peter really a parable for our times
- 22:31 which is that God calls us to distribute, to bring his love,
- 22:36 the Good News, the Redemption of man from his own selfish nature
- 22:42 to a relationship with God.
