Caption transcript for Psalms of Ascent (2018): “Psalms 128 & 129” (5/8)
- 00:05 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved,
- 00:11 for there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek,
- 00:14 for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.
- 00:38 Hi, I'm David Hart.
- 00:39 Welcome to Zola Levitt Presents.
- 00:41 And I'm Kirsten Hart.
- 00:42 Welcome to our Series, "Psalms of Ascent",
- 00:45 which are the psalms or songs that were sung
- 00:48 as the Israelites went up to Jerusalem and to the Temple.
- 00:52 Our Teacher for the whole Series is Dr. Jeffrey Seif.
- 00:55 He's here for the whole Series.
- 00:58 I think he's so interesting.
- 01:00 He keeps me captivated.
- 01:02 Dr. Seif, we appreciate
- 01:03 what you bring to this program.
- 01:04 Today begins with Psalm 128
- 01:06 which speaks of the blessings
- 01:08 for those who fear the Lord.
- 01:09 But first, let's go to Israel
- 01:11 for a dramatic re-enactment.
- 01:16 "Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord,"
- 01:18 that walketh in His Ways,"
- 01:21 "for thou shalt eat the labor of thine hands,"
- 01:24 "happy shalt thou be and it shall be well with thee."
- 01:28 "Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house,"
- 01:32 "thy children like olive plants round about thy table."
- 01:37 "Behold, thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord."
- 01:43 "Yeah, thou shalt see thy children's children,"
- 01:46 "and peace upon Israel."
- 01:53 "Focus on the Family" is a very famous ministry in North America,
- 01:58 and I'd imagine the world over.
- 02:00 One could wonder why there'd be a
- 02:01 focus on the family psalm
- 02:03 in what's called the Psalm of Ascents,
- 02:05 a psalm recited by Israelites as they're
- 02:07 making their way to and through Jerusalem,
- 02:10 on the trip of a lifetime.
- 02:13 One would expect, at one level, the Psalms of Ascents could be
- 02:16 rife with nationalist fervor and feeling,
- 02:21 and prayers for the Capital.
- 02:24 It's interesting, Psalm 128 as a psalm of ascent,
- 02:28 as it speaks of blessings from Jerusalem,
- 02:31 still looks at the family.
- 02:33 And the reason why this is correlated in my mind's eye
- 02:36 is because in order for families
- 02:39 to be secure and strong in a culture, in a country,
- 02:42 there has to be a strong Capital.
- 02:44 If this gets overrun, if Jerusalem is overrun,
- 02:47 then so much for family life.
- 02:49 Things are thrown into disarray and decay,
- 02:52 to put it mildly.
- 02:54 Truth be known, if the barbarians get the better in ancient Israel,
- 02:57 people are taken, they're slaughtered,
- 03:00 they're sold off into slave markets.
- 03:01 So much for happy families.
- 03:04 But here, when they made their way to Jerusalem,
- 03:06 they're seeking God there,
- 03:07 and they encounter the Lord and they sing these songs,
- 03:11 and there are things that hit them when they do.
- 03:13 Let me walk through some of this with you, please.
- 03:16 In Psalm 128:1,
- 03:18 [Speaking first in Hebrew]
- 03:26 And isn't that how the book of Psalms opens up in the first place?,
- 03:30 where he says, [Speaking Hebrew]
- 03:34 "Blessed is the man," or, "Happy is the man."
- 03:38 Didn't the Lord Himself say, "Blessed are the poor,"
- 03:41 "blessed are this"
- 03:42 It's the Greek "makarios"
- 03:44 but really it comes by way of the Hebrew, ashrey , "happiness",
- 03:48 there's a kind of personal happiness.
- 03:51 And this happiness manifests in a life
- 03:56 that develops in a home.
- 03:58 Thus, this happiness is available to everyone.
- 04:02 In talking about a happiness from
- 04:05 a good family, lovely children
- 04:07 enduring generations,
- 04:10 this is something that everybody can relate to.
- 04:13 In verse 2 we're told that
- 04:15 someone who's blessed in the Lord, who fears the Lord
- 04:19 will enjoy the fruits of the labor of their hand.
- 04:22 He says,
- 04:24 [Speaking first in Hebrew]
- 04:30 And again, as I'd said earlier,
- 04:32 at the end of the day, isn't that what people want?
- 04:34 He says in verse 3, that your wife will be a fruitful vine,
- 04:38 and thus the dramatic vignette that you saw
- 04:41 with the children round about.
- 04:43 Personally, I'm right on the heels of a marriage in my own family.
- 04:47 My eldest son is getting married,
- 04:49 and oh my world is so rich with hopes for the future,
- 04:52 and so happy in wanting to see new generations emerge.
- 04:56 I know that these impulses resonate within the psalmist.
- 05:01 He says here in verse 4,
- 05:02 "Surely thus shall the man be blessed."
- 05:05 Did you know that God in fact has a blessing for you?
- 05:09 It seems to me that the psalmist wants people to be reminded of that.
- 05:13 And then to look at verse 5, and
- 05:15 I want to camp there for a moment.
- 05:16 Let me give it to you first in my version,
- 05:18 and then we'll throw it into language you can understand.
- 05:20 He says,
- 05:21 [Speaking first in Hebrew]
- 05:41 It's not just prayers for personal well being,
- 05:44 but as I'd said earlier,
- 05:46 in so many ways, understandable ways,
- 05:49 a personal happiness,
- 05:50 a familiar well being
- 05:52 is inextricably related to the overall success of a Commonwealth
- 05:58 of which the condition of the Capital is so telling.
- 06:02 That is, if the Capital is strong,
- 06:05 if Jerusalem is strong,
- 06:06 it's like the dews at Mount Hermon that
- 06:09 descend then and water everything down the mountain, at the base,
- 06:13 and points north, south, east and west.
- 06:17 There needs to be a strong Capital.
- 06:21 This can translate in our own culture
- 06:23 where we want to have a government in Washington, D.C.
- 06:27 that seems to reflect the Judeo-Christian values
- 06:30 that many of those that watch this program would subscribe to.
- 06:34 There's a sense in which if it's God's man,
- 06:37 if there's God's values and virtues,
- 06:40 then there's a chance that this can disseminate round about in our culture.
- 06:45 Conversely, a sense that things are going awry in the Capital
- 06:50 has affects as it trickles down out of Washington D.C. in our world,
- 06:54 affects socially the kind of moral vision that's cast.
- 06:58 There's economic concomitants to that as well as there's concerns.
- 07:02 Goodness, if we're veering away from God in the Capital,
- 07:06 then goodness, this can be felt street level.
- 07:09 And so here, when they make their way to and through Jerusalem
- 07:14 for these special pilgrimages that pilgrims give voice to,
- 07:18 [Speaking first in Hebrew]
- 07:25 "And may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life."
- 07:30 Friends, as you know, we close these programs
- 07:33 praying for the peace of Jerusalem.
- 07:36 Certainly we want God's Kingdom to come
- 07:39 and His will to be done
- 07:41 on earth, here, as it is in heaven.
- 07:44 Oh, we want to see God's will done in Israel.
- 07:47 And there's some work to be done in a world
- 07:49 that seems to be cascading out of control,
- 07:52 but I believe that God in fact is going to have
- 07:55 this Word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
- 07:57 We're going to see eventually stability in this part of the world.
- 08:01 Till such time as that though, it's good to know that we can see
- 08:04 stability as God reaches into our families and strengthens and nurtures.
- 08:08 He can do it for me.
- 08:10 He can do it for you.
- 08:27 Our Offer on this program

- 09:11 Television isn't cheap.
- 09:13 We don't want to just ascend,
- 09:15 we want to transcend.
- 09:16 We've got a great message.
- 09:18 We need your help in telling it.
- 09:20 Please be gracious and make a kind donation
- 09:23 to Zola Levitt Ministries
- 09:34 We just want to say thank you so much
- 09:35 for your continued support

- 09:39 just like this one.
- 09:40 Now let's go to Psalm 129
- 09:42 which is the Psalm of Protection.
- 09:45 Let's go to Israel now.
- 09:49 Bullying has been around forever.
- 09:52 Repairing a fishing net is hard enough without hecklers pestering you,
- 09:57 mocking you.
- 10:00 This is a picture of Israel bullied,
- 10:03 and ridiculed by nations that seek her demise.
- 10:07 "Many a time have they afflicted me from youth", says the psalmist.
- 10:11 "Yet, they have not prevailed against me."
- 10:15 "The Lord is righteous, He hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked."
- 10:20 "Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion."
- 10:29 Bullies have been around for a long, long time.
- 10:34 Many a boy and girl have been vexed by bullies,
- 10:39 and felt the need to stand up and say, "Enough already!"
- 10:44 Might have been the case with you or someone within your family.
- 10:49 Certainly within the Jewish family we have felt the need
- 10:52 to stand up and say, "Enough already!"
- 10:57 Anyone who has read the Bible,
- 10:59 and for me, the Bible among other things
- 11:02 is the Jewish Family Diary.
- 11:05 It tells lots of stories of people prevailing...
- 11:10 assailing, rather, against the Jews,
- 11:13 and the Jews standing up.
- 11:17 Speaking of standing up, I am standing up in a place right now
- 11:21 that's remembered in Israel as a place
- 11:24 where people take a stand and make a stand.
- 11:28 It's Latrun
- 11:30 It's a museum that commemorates the armored divisions
- 11:34 in the Israeli Defense Forces.
- 11:38 And here there's a story that seems to tell it all doesn't it?
- 11:44 Brave men, out from the armor, jumping down, ready to engage.
- 11:50 Whether it's engaging individuals from within the tank,
- 11:53 or stepping out and engaging outside.
- 11:57 The point is sometimes we need to engage.
- 12:01 It's a scary business,
- 12:02 it's an unpleasant business.
- 12:04 My son Zachary once quoted Shakespeare
- 12:07 when we were talking about the need for men to stand up.
- 12:10 And he looked at me, and I was never prouder than when Zac said,"Dad",
- 12:13 "You know, Shakespeare said, 'A coward dies a thousand deaths,"
- 12:18 "'but the valiant die only once."
- 12:23 It was Shakespeare's way, of course, of giving voice
- 12:26 to the need for courage and persistence.
- 12:29 I don't get on television to talk about Shakespeare.
- 12:32 I have another author to refer to in Psalm Chapter 129.
- 12:38 That's a littler closer to home to what I'm all about.
- 12:41 In Psalms Chapter 129 the psalmist talks about
- 12:44 how the enemies keep coming and coming and coming,
- 12:49 and it's like it doesn't stop, it's perennial.
- 12:51 But there's a statement here in Psalm 129, verse 2.
- 12:55 I want to give it to you in Hebrew and then in English.
- 13:06 "Before that, many times through my youth they've come and this and that,"
- 13:10 "but they have not prevailed against me."
- 13:16 Let's do a whirlwind tour of the Bible,
- 13:20 not to cover every subject in 4 minutes,
- 13:23 but, you know the story,
- 13:25 there was a time when the Israelites where bested by the Egyptians.
- 13:30 Very, very unfair, in the clutches of
- 13:34 Paroh Melech Mizraim "Pharaoh the King of Egypt".
- 13:38 And you know what happened?
- 13:39 A great miracle.
- 13:40 God sent Moshe Rabbeinu , "Moses"
- 13:42 and the Children of Israel were delivered from Egypt.
- 13:47 Esther of course, is a story in the Hebrew Bible about a woman
- 13:51 who was well placed, "for such a time as this".
- 13:54 And what was the time?
- 13:56 Well, there in the Persian realm there was a fellow Haman
- 13:59 who was hell bent on destroying the Jews.
- 14:01 In fact, it could have happened.
- 14:03 She interceded and the Jews were afforded the opportunity
- 14:06 to make a spirited defense,
- 14:09 and Jews did.
- 14:11 The net result is that God gave us favor.
- 14:14 Oh, it's a joy to celebrate Purim in a Jewish home,
- 14:18 in a Jewish Synagogue,
- 14:19 here in the Jewish Homeland,
- 14:21 to see all the joy that goes along with the holiday.
- 14:24 It's something to behold.
- 14:26 Purim is one example.
- 14:28 A Passover, or the
- 14:30 "Egyptian debacle" is another.
- 14:31 God delivered us from that.
- 14:33 The story of Hanukkah is celebrated in the Jewish world,
- 14:36 when the Syrians were bent on destroying the Jewish people.
- 14:41 Nes Gadol Haya Shin
- 14:42 "A great miracle happened there."
- 14:45 The story is played out in the inter-testimental period
- 14:49 between the Old and the New Testaments, that is.
- 14:52 It tells of a time when Antiochus Epiphanies ran over the Jewish people
- 14:56 and endeavored to destroy us.
- 14:58 But you know what happened?
- 15:00 People stood up and made a spirited defense.
- 15:05 It seems that in every generation, or in many generations,
- 15:08 God calls Jewish people to stand up.
- 15:11 That is why I love the expression in the Hebrew Bible,
- 15:14 [First in Hebrew]
- 15:21 Standing up, contending.
- 15:23 You know I think sometimes we
- 15:26 just are a little too comfortable,
- 15:28 and we prefer life that's easy.
- 15:31 You can find a church where the Reverend says,
- 15:33 "just sit your tuchus here in the pew and everything's going to be good for you."
- 15:38 It's overly simplistic.
- 15:40 Or, a Reverend can say,
- 15:42 "Read this book and say this prayer this way,"
- 15:45 "and then the trials are going to evaporate."
- 15:47 It doesn't always go away quick.
- 15:49 It doesn't' always go away easy.
- 15:51 Coming from Latrun, I want to tell you however,
- 15:54 that if you've got God on your side
- 15:57 you are going to be able to say like the psalmist said,
- 16:00 [Speaking in Hebrew]
- 16:03 "They have not prevailed against me."
- 16:09 I have to admit that I think sometimes
- 16:11 we forget or take for granted
- 16:13 how great we have it here in America
- 16:15 compared to other places in the world.
- 16:17 That's true,
- 16:18 and no matter where you live
- 16:20 know that God is there to protect you.
- 16:24 The Bible says, "Call upon the Name of the Lord."
- 16:26 "He will be there, and He will be faithful to protect His people."
- 16:29 That's right, "faithfulness"
- 16:31 is another Name for God.
- 16:32 Let's go to our Hebrew Lesson.

- 16:41 We're here in the City of Jerusalem

- 16:47 Adonai Tsoo-ree
- 16:49 "God my Rock"
- 16:51 Tsoo-ree comes from the word " Tsoo " which means "a big rock".
- 16:56 Kind of like Yosemite, and Yellowstone.
- 16:59 That kind of big rock.
- 17:01 Adonai Tsoo-ree
- 17:03 When I stand on that Rock
- 17:05 in my life,
- 17:06 in my prayer,
- 17:07 in my exultation,
- 17:09 nothing can move me,
- 17:11 nothing can attack me or touch my life
- 17:14 when I stand on that Tsoo ,
- 17:17 on the Rock that is God.
- 17:19 The Bible also mentions
- 17:21 God in this Name,
- 17:23 Tsoo Yisrael ,
- 17:25 which means "The Rock of Israel"
- 17:27 And how many of us know that God
- 17:30 is a keeper of His promises.
- 17:32 He keeps Israel on that Rock.
- 17:35 On that Solid Foundation.
- 17:37 So this week as we pray and we worship,
- 17:41 we can say, God you are my Rock,
- 17:44 I shall not be moved.
- 17:46 Adonai Tsoo-ree
- 17:50 Thank you so much Sarah.
- 17:51 We love her teaching each week.

- 23:09 of education, law, business,
- 23:11 and we see that this is the way that the Messiah's going to be
- 23:16 working in this time in Israel.
- 23:18 The concept of planting congregations and of spreading out,
- 23:22 is one that of course is common in the Book of Acts,
- 23:25 where the first Messianic Jewish messengers
- 23:28 gathered together, for instances in Acts Chapter 13.
- 23:31 They sought the Lord, the prayed,
- 23:33 and the Holy Spirit spoke to them and said,
- 23:36 I want Paul and Barnabas to go out, I have work for them to do.
- 23:40 And they spread out into the Mediterranean world of that day.
- 23:43 This is really the spirit of the original Messianic Jewish community
- 23:47 and we are thrilled to be able to
- 23:49 walk in their footsteps now in the 21st Century.
- 23:53 We invite you to join us through prayer and participation,
- 23:57 to be a part of this tremendous renewal and restoration
- 24:02 of what the Lord did some 2,000 years ago.
