- 00:10 Can't find him.
- 00:12 Lost in the middle of London.
- 00:13 I mean, I kept track of him in Syria.
- 00:16 Even when he tried to sneak into the Gaza Strip, I stopped

- 00:41 if we know Josh, and we we all know Josh, he's out doing
- 00:45 something he shouldn't be.
- 00:46 But I wanted to let you know, I was gonna tell you earlier,
- 00:49 I actually found a list of Josh's to-dos.
- 00:53 It was body surfing a double-decker bus,
- 00:57 which he already marked off.
- 00:58 Don't know when he did that.
- 01:00 He's eaten all the bangers and mash that anybody could

- 01:04 Caleb: Yeah, I saw that.
- 01:05 Hirchie: Earlier, I saw him being chased by a fish and
- 01:07 chips guy.
- 01:08 I don't think he paid for it, and because he was yelling
- 01:10 something at him.
- 01:11 So you know, the last thing, though, on the list that I'm a
- 01:13 little bit nervous about was he was going to let them know how
- 01:16 proud of an American he is.
- 01:18 I don't know what that means, but I'm a little worried myself.

- 05:07 18 are buried there.
- 05:09 Royal weddings happen.
- 05:11 This is the place to be if you are the Anglican Church
- 05:13 of England.
- 05:15 Caleb: You know, the Church of England was the first to break
- 05:18 away from the heretical and tyrannical grip of a Roman
- 05:21 Catholic Church near the end of the medieval era.
- 05:24 It was very interesting because in 1517, Martin Luther nailed
- 05:28 his 95 Theses to the church door in Germany, and that just opened
- 05:32 wide the doors for man to finally understand the Bible
- 05:36 for himself.
- 05:37 And God even used the the lust of King Henry VIII wanting
- 05:42 to divorce his wife, to eventually escalate to King
- 05:46 James translating the Bible into the English tongue, so that all
- 05:50 modern men could read it for themselves.
- 05:53 Oh, that's, [mumbling]
- 06:03 Hirchie: You know, even though the Anglican Church was birthed
- 06:06 out of the Reformation, you know, sadly it began to take on
- 06:10 the theology and the concepts of the high church, much like the
- 06:14 Catholic Church they had been removed from.
- 06:17 You know, along with that, as joyous as it was, there were
- 06:20 some other things that came out of there in the Protestant
- 06:22 movement that kind of were deceptive, such as the teachings
- 06:25 of Calvinism.
- 06:27 Caleb: Yeah, and then comes the Age of Enlightenment, or the Age
- 06:30 of Reason, and that would completely squash any notion of
- 06:33 faith, because this modern philosophy and intellectualism
- 06:40 would make man the god, his own intellect.
- 06:43 He had no need for a higher being or higher power because
- 06:47 that came from himself.
- 06:49 And he saw that eventually there would be Freemasonry, the
- 06:53 occult, the Illuminati.
- 06:56 All these new-age doctrines would supplant any notion of
- 07:02 biblical faith, because with the Age of Enlightenment, man turned
- 07:08 against the monarchy, turned against, like you said, the high
- 07:11 church, state-run churches, any faith in general, and morality
- 07:16 came to an all-time low.
- 07:23 Caleb: And we're in front of a very iconic and
- 07:25 important building.
- 07:26 This is Methodist Central Hall, the head of the Methodist Church
- 07:30 in the UK.
- 07:32 You know, Methodism in the past, Hirchie, it was birthed out of
- 07:35 the first Great Awakening, and not very many people know that
- 07:39 this outpouring of the Holy Spirit that swept over the UK
- 07:43 and even into America to the 13 colonies.
- 07:46 Hirchie: Yeah, you know, today the United Methodist Church has
- 07:49 gone through a lot of changes.
- 07:52 Actually went through a split over their recognition and
- 07:57 desire to allow homosexuality, actually even in the pulpits, in
- 08:00 their clergy.
- 08:02 And it's quite a change from where John Wesley started.
- 08:06 But you know, in the midst of it, it's amazing to know the
- 08:11 roots of it, to know the backstory of where
- 08:15 it all started.
- 08:16 For us, for our church, we actually share space
- 08:19 with a global Methodist church.
- 08:22 We meet on Saturdays in their congregation, and that pastor
- 08:25 has such a desire to see the things of God once again.
- 08:30 And so, you know, here we are in this telling the story of John
- 08:34 Wesley, because they started out with such a desire and a passion
- 08:38 for holiness and the experience in the encounters of the Holy
- 08:42 Spirit to take place.
- 08:44 And they were the first fruits of what we see that became the
- 08:47 Pentecostal movement, even in the United States of America.
- 08:51 Caleb: That's right.
- 08:53 A lot happened back then, and we're gonna tell you that story.
- 08:56 Caleb: Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved
- 09:00 through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of
- 09:04 God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
- 09:10 Caleb: John and Charles Wesley were born into a family of 19
- 09:13 children, but infant mortality was high back then.
- 09:16 Only nine survived.
- 09:18 His father was an Anglican minister, a poet, a preacher,
- 09:22 a singer, and he was in charge of a local parish.
- 09:26 Now when John was five years old, the family's house
- 09:31 burned down.
- 09:32 He was actually asleep upstairs when they gathered all the
- 09:35 children out and realized that he was stuck upstairs.
- 09:37 But supernaturally, he was able to escape out the window, and
- 09:41 his mother believed that God had ordained him and destined him
- 09:44 for an incredible purpose since he survived.
- 09:48 Joshua: Susanna, his mother, couldn't afford to send all the
- 09:51 kids to school.
- 09:52 It's a lot of kids, so she started the Wesley Family School
- 09:55 from 9 to 5.
- 09:56 They didn't have any textbooks.
- 09:58 They didn't have math and science and history.
- 10:00 They had one book, and that book was the Bible.
- 10:03 And having that one book encouraged the children to
- 10:05 memorize large portions of God's word, which would stick with
- 10:08 them for the rest of their lives.
- 10:11 Caleb: Galatians 2:16, "Know that a person is not justified
- 10:15 by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.
- 10:19 Because by the works of the law no one will be justified."
- 10:23 Caleb: So John Wesley started attending Christ Church in
- 10:26 Oxford in England.
- 10:28 It was a university.
- 10:30 And his brother Charles had already been there for a number
- 10:33 of years and was starting a club, a club of other believers
- 10:37 that could get together.
- 10:39 And they were mockingly referred to as the Holiness Club because
- 10:42 they would literally meet for three hours a day, pray every
- 10:47 hour on the hour, and they despised the perversion, the
- 10:52 darkness that was going on in England of the times, the
- 10:55 moral depravity.
- 10:56 And so they they created a methodical checklist of things
- 11:01 that they could do to gain holiness, you know, and they
- 11:05 would check off that list every day so that they could get
- 11:08 closer to God through these acts of righteousness.
- 11:11 That's why they were lovingly referred to as the
- 11:13 Methodists originally.
- 11:15 Joshua: Even though they had committed to prayer and fasting,
- 11:17 these things that have typically brought about revival, they were
- 11:20 putting their faith in these things.
- 11:22 They didn't understand the process of justification by
- 11:24 faith to Yeshua.
- 11:26 That wasn't being taught in the English Church at that time.
- 11:28 And because of that focus on the acts, it was, well, just acts,
- 11:34 and not God that was gonna bring it about.
- 11:38 But John and Charles would become clergy in the Church of
- 11:40 England, and they would travel to the New World, heading to
- 11:43 Savannah, Georgia.
- 11:44 It was a long trip at that time period by boat.
- 11:47 They encountered a storm that nearly ripped that boat in half.
- 11:51 Caleb: It was terrifying.
- 11:53 But during that storm, John went down beneath the boat, and he
- 11:56 found a group of Moravian Christians from Bohemia that
- 11:59 were singing and praising God.
- 12:01 And he was shocked they weren't afraid.
- 12:04 They had an inner peace that he did not have.
- 12:07 Something was special about 'em, and it just, he couldn't
- 12:10 shake it.
- 12:11 You know, how did they have this peace?
- 12:13 How were they secure in their salvation?
- 12:14 He didn't have that security.
- 12:16 And so when he went to Georgia, and for two years he was the
- 12:19 head of his church, people hated him.
- 12:22 It was terrible.
- 12:24 It was all the law, all control, all religion, and it was just
- 12:31 a disaster.
- 12:32 He ended up having to return to England because there was
- 12:36 no success.
- 12:37 There was no anointing behind it.
- 12:38 It was all legalism.
- 12:41 Caleb: Galatians 3:23-25, "Before the coming of this
- 12:46 faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until
- 12:49 the faith that was to come would be revealed.
- 12:53 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might
- 12:56 be justified by faith.
- 12:58 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian."
- 13:03 Caleb: John Wesley would never forget those Moravian Christians
- 13:06 that he met so many years ago who believed in salvation by
- 13:10 faith, justification by faith, and not by works, not
- 13:14 by christening.
- 13:15 And it tormented him for so many years, until one day his
- 13:19 brother, Charles, became born again, believed by faith, and
- 13:23 that even troubled him some more.
- 13:25 He was very angry and upset with Charles.
- 13:27 Hirchie: Yeah, one instance where John was actually given
- 13:30 the opportunity to lead a man to Christ, to faith, right before
- 13:35 he's being hanged.
- 13:37 And he talks about how he saw this man go to his end on this
- 13:42 Earth with such peace and such tranquility, and it blew his
- 13:46 mind because there was no way for this man to do the works
- 13:49 that he had taught for so long, but he had received Jesus
- 13:53 by faith.
- 13:55 And in those moments, along with these episodes with the
- 13:57 Moravians, it transformed him to know that there was more than
- 14:01 just the works of it, but the grace and faith of the Lord
- 14:05 Jesus Christ really transforming lives.
- 14:07 Caleb: Amen.
- 14:13 Caleb: On May 25, 1738, John Wesley was attending one of
- 14:17 those Moravian prayer meetings, you know, at Aldersgate Street.
- 14:22 It was here in London, and they were reading a commentary from
- 14:27 Martin Luther on the book of Romans.
- 14:29 And as he listened to how Paul explained that justification can
- 14:35 come by faith, even to the Gentiles, his eyes were open,
- 14:39 and he understood justification by faith.
- 14:41 He received salvation by faith in the Lord Yeshua, and he
- 14:45 finally received that peace he was hoping for, for all
- 14:47 those years.
- 14:49 Hirchie: Yeah, it was at that moment that the Holy Spirit
- 14:51 filled his life, and he was really transformed in such a
- 14:57 way, because now he was truly born again.
- 15:01 It wasn't just trying to do the works to get to heaven, but it
- 15:04 was actually by grace through faith that he received Yeshua
- 15:08 Jesus as his Lord and savior.
- 15:10 His life would never be the same.
- 15:12 His message would continue to grow in the understanding of
- 15:18 justification by faith, and the power of the Holy Spirit would
- 15:22 transform his life and through him transform

- 16:48 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly,

- 16:54 Joshua: Even though there were pockets of revival happening in

- 17:00 brother Charles, and George Whitfield, these three
- 17:03 Englishmen traveling across England and Ireland, spreading
- 17:06 the word of God and beginning this evangelical revival.
- 17:10 Caleb: Now, John Wesley would go from community to community on
- 17:16 horseback, and he would lead people to Yeshua.
- 17:20 They would become born again, and these pockets of communities
- 17:23 would end up creating congregations.
- 17:25 They would call themselves Methodists.
- 17:27 But the Church of England did not accept them or this new
- 17:30 doctrine, justification by faith, and mobs of people tried
- 17:34 to harm them again and again and again.
- 17:37 It was very traumatic.
- 17:39 They were kicked out of Anglican churches like this when they
- 17:41 tried to preach to people.
- 17:43 And so, eventually, George Whitfield, who was a natural
- 17:46 orator, he was very charismatic, taught them to speak in the
- 17:49 countrysides, out in the open, to project and garner the
- 17:53 attention of people, so more and more people could actually come
- 17:56 to hear of him in these open-air venues, and more and more people
- 18:00 came to Yeshua.
- 18:07 Caleb: Now, John began to witness the supernatural in
- 18:10 his meetings.
- 18:11 People would literally fall to the ground in the presence of
- 18:14 the Lord.
- 18:15 He didn't understand what it was, but he knew they were
- 18:16 connecting to God.
- 18:18 When people came, they would just weep and cry out for mercy,
- 18:21 or they would praise the Lord.
- 18:22 They would rejoice.
- 18:23 This was the beginning of him seeing many miracles and many
- 18:28 healings within these meetings.
- 18:30 And in fact, there was even many moments where he would be
- 18:33 afflicted with a fever or a sickness.
- 18:35 He didn't feel like he could make it through.
- 18:37 He pushed through as he was teaching, and the presence of
- 18:40 God would overtake him, would literally incinerate that fever,
- 18:43 that sickness within him, and he would be completely whole,
- 18:46 standing in front of crowds of thousands.
- 18:49 Joshua: John would also teach practical, healthy habits for
- 18:52 the people that he prayed for, so that they could actually be
- 18:56 wise in how they stewarded their own bodies.
- 18:58 But they did see the supernatural, even on one
- 19:00 occasion with the three of them going to a home and raising a
- 19:04 man from the dead.
- 19:05 Caleb: Yeah, it's possible.
- 19:07 Joshua: And incredible.
- 19:09 Caleb: Romans 2:4, "Or do you despise the riches of His
- 19:13 goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that
- 19:17 the goodness of God leads you to repentance?"
- 19:20 Joshua: George Whitfield's reach was incredible.
- 19:23 He would travel to America during the time of the
- 19:25 Great Awakening.
- 19:27 He began to preach across the colonies.
- 19:29 In one year's time, he preached 500,000 miles, 350 sermons to
- 19:35 Americans, even joined by guys like Jonathan Edwards.
- 19:39 He would preach to anyone, whether they were a slave,
- 19:41 a native.
- 19:43 He even became friends with Benjamin Franklin at one point.
- 19:46 He went about preaching the unashamed word of God.
- 19:50 The man was a powerhouse.
- 19:51 Caleb: That's right.
- 19:52 And John Wesley, over the course of 50 years traveling around the
- 19:55 United Kingdom on horseback, covered 400,000 miles.
- 19:59 He preached over 40,000 sermons leading people to Yeshua.
- 20:04 His little brother, Charles Wesley, also spread the gospel,
- 20:09 also strengthened the Methodist movement, even composing 6,500
- 20:14 hymns, many of which we still sing today.
- 20:18 Joshua: It's incredible.
- 20:21 Did you also notice the door fits our height, too?
- 20:27 Caleb: James 1:27, "Pure and undefiled religion before God
- 20:32 and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their
- 20:35 trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world."
- 20:40 Hirchie: You know, John Wesley was so challenged by the truth
- 20:43 of the gospel that he didn't just preach the gospel, but he
- 20:47 actually did good works.
- 20:49 You know, he and his Methodists were responsible for feeding the
- 20:52 poor, taking care of those who were in poverty and homeless,
- 20:57 reaching out into the city, even into the government.
- 21:01 And going into the government, they were strongly against the

- 21:16 And in his actions, in all these works, he gave away so much of

- 21:34 Caleb: It's incredible that he died in 1791 impoverished,
- 21:38 completely poor, because he gave away his entire wealth during

- 21:46 400 books.
- 21:48 He had $30,000, it's estimated, in his lifetime.

- 22:05 And he's buried at Wesley Chapel here in London to this day, and

- 22:31 Caleb: In America, the Great Awakening led to a godly
- 22:34 understanding of religious liberty and freedom that the
- 22:37 colonists carried with them into the Revolutionary War, fighting
- 22:41 for freedom from a tyrannical England at that time.
- 22:45 They wanted to be free to worship God in their own way,

- 23:18 We saw the fall of Germany, France, Italy, Austria.
- 23:23 All these people and the governments rebelled.
- 23:26 And even though there was corrupt governments, it just led
- 23:30 to anarchy, because that's really what the spirit of
