“Israel’s First Kings”
On the Mount of Olives, Dr. Seif discusses the reason and roles of the first two kings of Israel — Saul and David — as well as the expectations placed on them. Those in leadership — in fact, all Believers — face a constant temptation to drift away from Biblical values.

- 02:09 There's good news, there's bad news,
- 02:12 there's all sorts of news here.
- 02:13 And today, we're going to explore it with biblical views.
- 02:18 I'm interested in the book of Kings.
- 02:23 Actually, an old Hebrew Bible, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Kings, from Saul
- 02:29 at the beginning all the way to the ending kings with the fall
- 02:34 of the northern and southern kingdom, and we're going
- 02:37 to explore that in this series, "Kings and Kingdoms."
- 02:41 Now, I'm interested in the principals, that
- 02:44 is the principal kings themselves, the principals.
- 02:47 I'm also interested in the principles, that is the values,
- 02:51 the virtues that they lived by or didn't live by.
- 02:55 It's a great story.
- 02:57 Some were on the rise, others on the demise.
- 03:00 We're going to consider that story.
- 03:03 Here I am on the Mount of Olives, I'm going to go up
- 03:05 the hill and talk to you about it a little more.
- 03:07 Stay with me.
- 03:11 The story of Israel's kings is rather complex.
- 03:14 It's my job to make it simple and to make it relevant to you,
- 03:19 and I'm glad to do it from here in Jerusalem.
- 03:24 Speaking of here, you'll see that I have
- 03:27 here some paraphernalia that goes with the story.
- 03:32 A crown, these were expensive, handmade, bejeweled.
- 03:36 A scepter, a symbol of authority.
- 03:40 These were expensive too.
- 03:42 These monarchs held these as--they would point
- 03:45 to a certain direction and what they said went.
- 03:49 "You, go. You, come."
- 03:51 They point, they move, and the world moves.
- 03:54 Similarly, there's robes they wore.
- 03:56 They were--they were decked out.
- 03:59 Of course, there's a tax base that pays for all of this
- 04:01 and more, and the prophets warned about that,
- 04:04 but the people insisted on it.
- 04:07 I mention this because when we look at the period of kings in
- 04:11 the Bible, it's precipitated by 330 some odd years of misery.
- 04:17 There's no centralized authority, all the tribes
- 04:21 were like states, but they weren't forged in a federation.
- 04:25 And they were weak, they were constantly
- 04:27 overcome by their enemies.
- 04:29 And I'm going to open up the Bible in a second and you're
- 04:31 going to see where people want a monarch, they want a king.
- 04:35 Mono was one, arche is a Greek word for rule,
- 04:40 they wanted a leader.
- 04:42 And we're going to see leadership's important.
- 04:45 It's also important for that principal leader to be tethered
- 04:50 to biblical principles, and that wasn't always the case.
- 04:54 When we look at the story of Israel's kings,
- 04:56 it starts off with Saul, Shaul.
- 04:59 But he wasn't bridled by biblical virtues.
- 05:02 He dissipates, he evaporates, we see his demise.
- 05:06 And against that backdrop, we have the rise of David,
- 05:10 who comes out of nowhere,
- 05:12 providentially a man after God's own heart.
- 05:15 And led by that disposition, we see that he enjoys
- 05:20 success in life against all odds.
- 05:23 We see, however, that he gets a little too attracted
- 05:26 to that which comes with his office, and he forgets
- 05:30 the one who gave it to him.
- 05:32 He starts living in an entitlement mode,
- 05:35 and that becomes his undoing.
- 05:38 Happily for him, however, when we look at David,
- 05:41 he turns, he repents, and that salvages him and his dynasty.
- 05:48 Solomon comes in short order in the biblical text,
- 05:52 and his emergence comes with a lot of fanfare
- 05:55 and success and good things.
- 05:58 But he just proves faithless and spends the better part
- 06:02 of his administration indulging in that which comes
- 06:05 with it, and this will be his undoing.
- 06:09 The net result, his son Rehoboam comes to power,
- 06:12 and with him comes a civil war, the north and the south.
- 06:16 There's a revolt.
- 06:18 The united monarchy ceases, it's what we call a divided monarchy
- 06:23 subsequent to Rehoboam, and the net result
- 06:26 is political intrigue, war, death, decay,
- 06:29 disorientation goes off the charts.
- 06:32 The northern kingdom that breaks away is going to have 19 kings,
- 06:36 it's going to have 200 years of history before it's destroyed,
- 06:39 and 9 dynasties.
- 06:41 Lots of intrigue, lots of despair, we want to look at
- 06:44 that and consider what happens when people turn away from God.
- 06:48 We want leadership that's godly, not just in our broader cultural
- 06:53 home, but in our individual homes as well.
- 06:56 We're going to see there's a correlation between success in
- 06:59 life and commitment to biblical vision and virtue,
- 07:02 doesn't matter who you are.
- 07:04 Kings can think they're above it all, but they're not,
- 07:07 and we see that.
- 07:09 We look at the story of the northern kingdom,
- 07:10 it spins into decay and de-care and disrepair,
- 07:14 and eventual dissolution.
- 07:16 The southern kingdom is not going to go through dynastic
- 07:19 changes as was the case with the north.
- 07:21 They're going to have 28 kings, but only eight of them are going
- 07:26 to prove themselves to be men after God's own heart.
- 07:31 The net result too is that the southern kingdom is going
- 07:35 to experience all kinds of decay and disorientation as well.
- 07:39 Well, rather than just talk about the Bible story, I want
- 07:43 to take a look at it, if you will, where it all begans--
- 07:46 where it all begins, excuse me.
- 07:48 Where it all began, past tense,
- 07:50 for the purpose of kings and kingdoms.
- 07:52 We're looking in the book that we call 1 Samuel.
- 07:57 The reason why I say that we call 1 Samuel is because
- 08:00 the ancient Hebrews called this 1 Kings, and what we call
- 08:04 2 Samuel 2 Kings, et cetera.
- 08:07 But any case, never mind that.
- 08:09 In chapter 8, verse 5, people are pressing
- 08:14 the prophet to anoint.
- 08:16 They want God's hand in the matter.
- 08:19 They want God's approval.
- 08:21 They want his anointing, but they want a singular king.
- 08:25 And they press him vociferously, they're pressing,
- 08:30 "Appoint for us a king to judge us."
- 08:36 Now, with that, they weren't just looking
- 08:38 for an administrator for their civil affairs.
- 08:42 True, they wanted that, but beyond that.
- 08:46 Well, I would imagine the reason why they appealed to that is
- 08:49 Samuel, the guy they were appealing to, was the judge,
- 08:52 but he was regional, not national.
- 08:55 And not wanting Samuel's sons as a replacement, they say,
- 08:58 "Give us a king to judge us."
- 09:00 But really they're looking for more than that, they're looking
- 09:03 for someone to bring them together in a federation and
- 09:07 give them good success by uniting their energies to stave
- 09:11 off the troubles of the day.
- 09:14 Used to be back in the day if the tribe of Issachar was
- 09:17 invaded, so was it--it was Issachar's problem.
- 09:19 But now if a singular tribe is invaded, the king sends forces
- 09:24 to bear from all the tribes.
- 09:26 The thinking is, and it makes a lot of sense, that they can have
- 09:29 good success because the king can marshal more energies in
- 09:32 order to have success.
- 09:34 And this is true in principle, but as we're going to see time
- 09:37 and time again in the biblical text, and I hope you see it when
- 09:41 you cast your vote for whatever you're voting for or for the way
- 09:44 you live your life, that there are things that can make sense
- 09:47 in a human sense, but as we're going to see, people need to be
- 09:52 tethered to biblical vision and virtue.
- 09:55 One thing that's clear in the biblical text is that when it
- 09:59 comes to kings, kingdoms, leaderships,
- 10:01 success in life, it's fidelity to biblical literature
- 10:05 that pays the dividends.

- 10:15 Jeffrey: It's one thing to dress like a king,
- 10:19 it's another thing to actually be one.
- 10:22 And if you're going to be a king,
- 10:25 you have to have a kingdom.
- 10:28 The word "kingdom" itself is a conflation of two words,
- 10:31 the king's domain.
- 10:33 That is the area where the king rules.
- 10:38 If a king is going to rule from an area,
- 10:40 a king is it going to need a capital.
- 10:43 And no one knew that more than Israel's essentially first
- 10:49 and arguably greatest king.
- 10:52 Well, there was one before David and we'll get to that
- 10:54 in a moment, but David himself, when he came into his own,
- 10:58 he really felt that compulsion to go for capital city
- 11:03 in a place known today as Yerushalayim.

- 11:27 If these stones could talk, they would speak of the Jebusites
- 11:30 who built these as part of their fortifications.
- 11:34 We read in the biblical literature about the Jebusites,
- 11:37 and we learn how David stealthily got the better of
- 11:40 them and established his city and his capital not right here,
- 11:46 but up there in the city of David.
- 11:49 I love taking you to it, and I love taking you
- 11:52 to the Bible that tells the story of it.
- 11:54 And as we look at kings and kingdoms, indeed
- 11:57 that's a story that we need to tell.
- 12:04 Men are always clamoring for power, and there
- 12:08 is so much political intrigue associated with it
- 12:11 because people want to wear the crown.
- 12:16 I mention that because we see political intrigue in advance
- 12:20 of David's ascension to power.
- 12:23 There's political intrigue throughout his reign,
- 12:27 all kinds of tensions.
- 12:29 And then in David's waning years, there's political
- 12:33 intrigue associated with who's going to succeed him.
- 12:38 I'm going to open up the Bible in a little bit and speak to
- 12:41 that, but now just the issues associated with that.
- 12:45 In a series that deals with kings and kingdoms, even in
- 12:50 biblical literature, we see all kinds of machinations at work
- 12:56 yesterday much as we see them today as individuals are
- 13:00 jockeying to be the man of the hour with the power.
- 13:05 A difference in the biblical economy, however, is that
- 13:09 leaders were not elected, leaders were selected.
- 13:14 That is to say the story begins with God himself appointing,
- 13:19 anointing in fact.
- 13:22 We know in biblical literature the word "mashiach"
- 13:25 or messiah means anointed one.
- 13:27 It might as well mean appointed one because there's providence
- 13:32 at work with God picking a person.
- 13:34 Well, God picks the person with a net result
- 13:37 is they're given power.
- 13:39 Their keeping power and using it successful is predicated not
- 13:45 on the dint of their own determination, but to the
- 13:48 extent that they adhere to biblical principles.
- 13:53 I say that because as we go through this series and we're
- 13:58 really just beginning it now, as we go through a series looking
- 14:01 at kings and kingdoms, you are going to hear me alighting
- 14:06 upon issues associated with faithfulness to biblical vision,
- 14:11 virtue, and value.
- 14:13 That in and of itself, according to the biblical text,
- 14:16 lends itself toward the success of the kings and then
- 14:19 the success of the kingdoms.
- 14:22 I'm going to open up the Bible a minute and we're going to see
- 14:24 how that's played out, that is this jockeying for power
- 14:28 and what God does with it.
- 14:32 "The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself
- 14:35 will establish a house for you.
- 14:38 When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors,
- 14:42 I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh
- 14:47 and blood, and I will establish his kingdom."
- 14:53 Coming here now from the very base of the Jebusite city
- 14:58 of old, and you can see it's the base 'cause
- 15:01 we're right down to bedrock now.
- 15:03 And you can see with the Yebusi,
- 15:05 the Jebusites placed rocks on top.
- 15:07 They're building up their city and their fortifications
- 15:10 all around, but we're right here at the bedrock.
- 15:13 To me, it's a good point to talk about building
- 15:16 a life on good bedrock.
- 15:18 Jesus talked about a good foundation that's built solidly,
- 15:22 and then it stands the test of time.
- 15:25 There's so much political intrigue with power, dynasties
- 15:28 come and go, and it's good to have a foundation to build upon.
- 15:32 And the Scriptures, it's just the best
- 15:34 foundation that I know of.
- 15:37 And we can see when we look at the life of David,
- 15:40 Saul himself was initially the king, but he got
- 15:43 too much into being the king.
- 15:45 He wanted to wear the robe and have the power,
- 15:47 but he didn't want to do that which went with the job.
- 15:50 He wound up losing the power and the job.
- 15:52 David, on the other hand, seemed to march to the tune
- 15:56 of a different drummer.
- 15:57 He, in fact, was a man after God's own heart.
- 16:00 And the Torah beckons individuals--
- 16:03 [speaking in Hebrew]
- 16:08 We're to love the Lord with all our hearts, soul, and might,

- 16:19 there's all kinds of machinations and intrigue.
- 16:22 And sometimes there's pretense of obedience to the Lord,
- 16:26 but it doesn't work out in substance.
- 16:28 I note that because even in David's own life, when we open
- 16:32 up to 1 Kings in the first chapter, we're told that
- 16:36 Adonijah the Haggith exalted himself,
- 16:39 saying, "I will be king."
- 16:42 Now, this was David's fourth son.
- 16:46 Two were killed, we don't know what happened to the one between
- 16:49 them, but this fellow figured he--you know,
- 16:52 "I am the heir and I'm entitled to this."
- 16:55 You know, and David is waning with his faculties and
- 16:57 with his health, so he asserts himself.
- 17:00 What's going to happen is Bathsheba, his wife,
- 17:03 is going to inform him, "Time out, stop.
- 17:07 No, it's Solomon who's the one to succeed."
- 17:12 I mention this because when it comes to politics,
- 17:15 there's always political intrigue and jockeying.
- 17:18 I think it best to look for individuals who are endeavoring
- 17:25 to build on bedrock of good promise as opposed to scheming
- 17:29 and manipulating the way to get to the top with fancy words
- 17:34 and extension of their own ambition.
- 17:37 I don't mind ambition, but what would I look for in a leader,
- 17:40 and as we look at kings and kingdoms in the Bible, you're
