October 1993 Personal Letter

Shalom, Dear Friend,

I’ve had some exciting mornings in my day but none more dramatic or upsetting than August 30! Whatever significant event I could list, it wouldn’t hold a candle to what I read that morning. I’m sure you were as shocked as I was when you heard the news.

Along with just “getting up,” my morning routine usually includes some exercise, then a nourishing breakfast while I read The New York Times. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The headline read, IN DRAFT ACCORD, ISRAELIS AND P.L.O. NEAR RECOGNITION. Palestinians Would First Rule Gaza and Jericho — Some Voice Strong Opposition.

Hundreds of thoughts ran through my mind as my amazement grew. Then my eyes caught the next article, Intervention by Christopher Gave Impetus to Israeli-Palestinian Deal. What’s going on? An agreement for mutual recognition by Israel and the P.L.O.? Self-rule in Israeli-occupied territories? A shift of authority starting in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank city of Jericho? I must be having a terrible nightmare!

Scripture and history flooded my mind. I’m not a political commentator but God has given me a gift to interpret Scripture and biblical prophecy in the light of world politics and changes in our culture. This is evident in what our ministry represents and what the Zola Levitt Presents television program communicates. This “so-called” peace agreement is significant to the Body of Christ. It is further evidence that not much more has to be “readied” for the Rapture of the Church to occur.

Prophecy marches on. The Jews returned to the Holy Land, Israel is a nation, the Six-Day War returned Jerusalem and the West Bank of the Jordan River valley, preparation is being made for the Temple, and fringe reports about the ashes of the red heifer and related minutia are regularly talked about.

There will be further developments by the time you receive this letter. Reporters and political commentators will continue to present and interpret this historic and, in my opinion, tragic event from every angle — dissecting and analyzing from their secular, humanistic viewpoint. Exactly how will the agreement be implemented? Thus far, no one has investigated the outside pressures America and the European community applied to precipitate the agreement.

I must share my heart with you. My spirit cries out asking how can the Israeli government deal with the devil? What they plan to do is TOTALLY contrary to God’s land covenant with Abraham!

Pick a city to give away in order to offend God the most. Which one would it be? Jericho — gateway to the Promised Land.

Jericho and the land around it belong to the Jews. God gave it to them. It’s not theirs to give away. It’s the same as Christians trying to give their salvation to someone else. The Gaza Strip is just a buffer between Israel and Egypt but Jericho is an entirely different matter.

Giving away Jericho is not just an insult to those who believe God gave Jericho and the land around it to the Jews — it’s a strategic military outpost and a first step in opening the door to a P.L.O.-controlled Israel and an invasion from the north. Jericho is a small city but one of great biblical significance. It has as vital a military role today as in the Old Testament. The Allenby Bridge spans the Jordan River and connects the West Bank with the nation of Jordan. It serves as the primary means of transportation to Jordan and Iraq. Jericho, 30 minutes from Jerusalem and the first major city between Jerusalem and the nations of the East, protects against a riverside attack as well as a possible invasion from the north down the Jordan Valley.

By that afternoon, CNN was calling the agreement a chance for Palestinians to have self-rule after decades of hostility. The evening news announced it as a conceptual breakthrough and a bridgehead for a Palestinian state.

Hasn’t the P.L.O. proven, and history confirmed, that it wants control over Jerusalem, its own state and the annihilation of the nation of Israel — driving it into the sea?

My first thought was — could this be a payoff for no more World Trade Centers? Was Israel bullied by America to agree to peace at any price in order to call off terrorism in America? No matter what the reason, Israel is rewarding terrorism and sending the signal, kill innocent people. “Create political and social mayhem. You’ll be rewarded.”

What about the involvement of the United States? The New York Times claims Secretary of State Warren Christopher’s shuttle diplomacy made the agreement possible. Associated Press reports, “The Clinton Administration is enlisting some $200 million for the start-up of Palestinian self-rule.” Our secular nation is already in trouble … having chosen to reject Creator God. If America played an important role in this terrible decision, we’re on a faster course to disaster than we might realize.

God’s Word is clear …”And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse” (Genesis 12:3). If we have contributed to causing Israel to violate a covenant with its land giver — Creator God — woe unto us! It wouldn’t take much to apply the prophecy of Amos to our nation: “The Lord roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem He utters His voice … for three transgressions and for four, I will not revoke its punishment” (Amos 1:2 and 2:3).

I shouldn’t have been surprised by this news since Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin promised an agreement like this in his recent election campaign. The secular Jews do not understand the spiritual implications of their decisions. They are well-meaning secular leaders trying to solve a spiritual problem that will be solved only when the Prince of Peace rules from the Throne of David in Jerusalem!

Any peace agreement involving Israel is a “false peace” and will lead to deception. This agreement with the P.L.O. is not the peace agreement described in Daniel 9:27, which will give a guarantee of security to Israel. That agreement will be made with the “great world leader” we know as the Antichrist. This agreement with the P.L.O. offers absolute insecurity and puts Israel in an indefensible position for protection with conventional weapons.

While Foreign Minister Shimon Peres is saying, “This is a great step in breaking the 100 years of hatred and violence and presents hope for the younger generation,” there is strong opposition not only in Israel but within the P.L.O. Even Yasser Arafat has received death threats from the Hamas. The conservatives in Israel such as General Sharon are saying, “Don’t call it peace. The P.L.O. has not changed its purpose or heart. There’s no reason for this agreement; it will not be peace.”

Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of the opposition Likud Party, said in a television report, “This is not the end of trouble but the BEGINNING of trouble. It is the height of folly and a quest for peace at any price. Peace at any price is not peace and the price is high.”

I’ve already taken three pages and barely touched the surface. I plan to thoroughly cover this agreement in the upcoming Levitt Letters.
