American pastor Saeed Abedini has reportedly been “viciously beaten” by fellow prisoners in an unprovoked attack in the Iranian prison where he’s being held. The pastor was punched in the face, leaving his eyes beaten black and blue, but prison guards intervened and prevented further injury.

The American Center for Law and Justice, the law group which represents his wife, Naghmeh Abedini, and the couple’s two children in the U.S., said that the prisoners also demolished a small table that the pastor had used to study and read during the beating that he endured the first week of June.

Abedini was allowed to see a prison doctor, who determined that he does not have any broken bones. The following week, he was able to see a family member who came to visit him and see his injuries firsthand.

“It is heartbreaking to me and my family that Saeed was again beaten in prison. Saeed’s life is continuously threatened not only because he is an American, but also because he is a convert from Islam to Christianity. It’s time to get Saeed home before it is too late,” Naghmeh Abedini said in response to the news.

Back in May, Abedini marked his 35th birthday in prison, where he has spent over two and a half years for his Christian faith. He was arrested in Iran in 2012 while working on an orphanage for children, and later sentenced to eight years in prison.

The pastor has faced a number of beatings while in prison, both from other inmates and guards. The ACLJ and Naghmeh Abedini have expressed concerns that his condition worsens after each beating.

After the beating, Abedini spoke before Congress, pleading for further actions to be taken to help free her husband.

“Over the last three years, I have had to watch my two children, Rebekka (who is 8 years old) and Jacob (who is 7 years old), suffer daily as they have grown up without a father,” Abedini said.

“I am here today as a single mother who is trying to be strong for her children, and as a wife who humbly admits, I need your help. I cannot bear to look at my children’s longing eyes one more time and explain to them why their daddy is still not home.”

She later told The Christian Post that Abedini has been told his prison sentence will be increased unless he denies his Christian faith — something she insists her husband will not do.

“The times they have moved him in and out of solitary [confinement] and the times they have threatened him, they said ‘You will stay here longer than the eight years and your only key to freedom is if you deny your Christian faith and you return to Islam.’ The guards have said that, officials have said that continuously,” Abedini said.

  • I never understand this kind of thing….I am a christian, and if put in that kind of situation, I would have to think this way-it doesn’t matter WHAT you SAY to these horrendous people….or for example when teens were killing classmates at a school, and asked are you a christian? and if they said yes-they were shot. Tell these murderers WHATEVER they want to hear…this is so stupid…tell them no, if it will save ur life- he should deny he’s a christian and get the heck out of there! God knows WE LOVE HIM, don’t worry about what WORDS we have to say to get out of a dangerous/deadly situation….I just don’t get it.we don’t have to tell the truth to these murderers…in fact THEY DON’t DESERVE to know.

  • L. Salvadori – I respectfully disagree. There is no way that we can trust the Iranians to be faithful to their word of releasing him, even if he does deny Christ. In fact, the Bible tells us not to EVER deny Jesus! Matthew 10:33 says “But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.”

I understand your logic, but Pastor Saeed is living biblically, even though it is the hardest thing he has ever done. I admire his faith. Bless you brother.

  • Gods word says ___if any man denies me in front of men he I will deny in front of my father which is in heaven. Praise God for Pastor Saeeds faith, he will have a crown of life.

  • Hi, to be a real Christian you must endure suffering always remember the positive the spirit of glory rests on those who suffer.Look at what Paul had to endure to enter the kingdom,Jesus even said i will show him how much He will suffer. We have made Christianity a Sunday service how far from the truth it has fallen. He who endures to the end will be saved. To give your life for Christ in such circumstances carries great reward in eternity.Christ said i will never leave you or forsake you but most Christians have never come into this encounter with Christ,Intimacy is a reality known to the very few who truly hunger and thirst for Christ alone above everything and every one else.Persecution is coming to every nation in the days ahead we all need to be ready to die for Christ otherwise people will deny the Lord and spend eternity regretting that denial remember no cowards or liars will enter the kingdom of heaven, its time to reflect on what sort of commitment each one of us have made to Christ, did you just pray a prayer to get a ticket to heaven and everything carries on the same and your life is as distracted as it ever was and Christ is a figment of your imagination some were in the back ground this type of relationship will not make it in these days ahead.Mathew 24 is clear many will depart from the faith and the love of many will grow cold WHY?because these type of Christian are still living for them selves, these are warnings to us from the Lord, the question is,is what your living for worth dying for.Do you have a deep intimate relationship that draws your heart closer and closer with every passing day for His presence to envelope you to the point you just can not stop thinking about Him every minute of the day Just waiting for that moment when you can be alone with Him in the secret place,if this is not your or my reality we have back slidden into idolatry something else has taken His place this is a very unstable place to live and these are those people mathew 24 are talking about. The Lord is warning us do we have ears to hear and eyes to see if not where will we end up the choice is ours, lets start making the right choices because one day we could find ourselves in such a situation like our brother is in right now, never forget His grace is sufficient just because you might not have experienced it doesn’t mean to say its not real
Gods power is released where mercy is needed.Father we remember our brother before you and we would ask that you would continue to strengthen His inner man and strengthen Him with endurance to the end.Father we ask you for the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of you to fill His family with truth and to grant them the peace that surpasses understanding of this situation they find their father and husband in,you are our portion Lord Amen!
